Well it is a very good adaptation, the cinematography is breathtaking and it has a very haunting soundtrack - I would say it is Michael Fassbenders best performance to date. Even if you are bored of the story of Macbeth, it's still a very rewarding experience and a great take on the story.

The Lobster is a very funny black comedy, probably the directors most accessible film, and I would say it's his best, Dogtooth is close though, but it is a lot darker, The Lobster just wins because the humour is so good, subtle, but perfectly placed in the film. It has many memorable moments and the cast do a fantatasic job, my favourite role for Rachel Weisz.

If you know Gasper Noe's work then you won't be disappoint with Love, like The Lobster it's his most accessible and least shocking film and just a great celebration of love and sex, it doesn't try to shock you, just draws you into this mesmerising world of lust and passion.

Criterion. Everyone loves them. They release a ton of great films, but not exactly at the quickest pace. About 6 years ago, I discovered that Criterion had the rights to Hunter in the Dark. One of the greatest films I have ever seen staring Tatsuya Nakadai and Sonny Chiba in his best performance.

Soon after that I discovered that Criterion has the rights to Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron, Death Shadows, Heat Wave, Tracked, and The Oil Hell Murders. While it's great that these are on Hulu, these films deserve the proper physical releases.

Jon Mulvaney sold out to the Man years ago...you'll get no help from him.

He is now an established member of the Hollywood Industrial Complex.

If I were you I'd delete that post and go off the grid for a few weeks.

For YEARS I've tried communicating with Criterion to no avail. Not sure if they don't see these films as money makers or what, but they are more amazing that you can imagine. At the rate things are going, I'll die, or the physical format will die before Criterion will release these films.

I'm in a desperate situation and would like any help I can get. These are the two e-mails I can find that might actually work. mulvaney@criterion.com and/or suggestions@criterion.com

Look up these movies and see for yourself why they deserve to be released. Hunter in the Dark is without a doubt a film making achievement and I would love to hear what Tatsuya Nakadai has to say about them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Via e-mailing Criterion or other suggestions at reaching out to Criterion. I hope someone can help and hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

Though thankfully not overrated by Welles, Kurosawa, or Polanski. Personally, I'm very much looking forward to the new version. Seems like an age between Cannes and the release date next month.

The American Friend is sensational. I never pictured Tom Ripley in a cowboy hat living alone in Germany but it works. The basic premise of the novel is there but the film takes its liberties. Wenders makes it work very well.

As far as Ripley films I've seen: Purple Noon and The American Friend are great. The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon is good.

If I wasn't a huge fan of Purple Noon, do you think I would like The American Friend?

Yes. It's very easy to get into. You may enjoy it even more if you read the Ripley novels which I can't recommend enough. Highsmith is a great writer.

I'm pleased to say that I used my 30% coupon tonight at B&N and purchased 3 more Criterion blu-rays.

Ikiru
Don't Look Back
Repo Man

I hesitated for years on the last title, but I finally went for it.

Nice to get one of those titles for only $12.59 + tax. Not saying which one it was.

This will be my final haul for the sale by the way. Bought about 10 Criterions in all. I'll take a photo and post it in the next few days of all the titles.

Interesting. Yeah, many years ago I had e-mailed Jon about Criterion getting the rights about Kagemusha and he was very interested in my thoughts and was very helpful. Then a few years later Criterion actually released the film. However, with my questions about Hideo Gosha I've gotten mostly copy and paste generic responses. Not sure what exactly happened.

Why do you think I should delete the post and go off the grid? Haha, not sure if that was was a serious statement or not.

Yup. Might want to see if you can get in touch with Robert Forster. He can help you disappear. You might end up in a snowy cabin in the middle of Nowhere, New Hampshire, but you'll be safe from the Mulvaney.

I lucked out. My local Barnes & Noble had a copy of Three Colors on Blu-ray, so I reserved it last night, and picked it up today. Also grabbed Modern Times.

B&N's sale was quite fruitful for me this time around:

Three Colors trilogy
Modern Times
Night and the City
Ikiru
Ace in the Hole
Fisher King
Confession
Anatomy of a Murder
Kiss Me Deadly
Rules of the Game
Mulholland Drive
Rosemary's Baby

The Lewisville, TX store had a really nice CC selection. I looked through all their boxed sets and DigiPacks. All of them were in immaculate condition. Not a hint of package damage to any of them. From now on, when I buy a boxed set, or one of the movies without the Scanavo cases, I'm going to get them there. I felt like a kid in a candy store.

OK, so just ordered An Autumn Afternoon. I honestly thought that I had ordered this on more than one occasion. The brain cells -- they aren't doing too well these days.

So, as far as Criterion is concerned, all I picked up this weekend was Sullivan's Travels and the aforementioned Ozu film.

I also got Pitch Perfect 2, but that's not exactly on topic.

Start work on Tuesday so been making the most of the last few days off by going through my collection

Las two days I have watched Three Colours Trilogy, The Double Life of Veronique, Trilogy of Life and Mulholland Dr (some were watched a second time with commentary track).

Forgot how good Three Colours: Red is, but still prefer Veronique out of his other films. I do love the introduction sequence to Red though.

Loving the on set footage for Mulholland Dr , find it so amusing how cheap and nasty the footage looks with on set cameras and the scene doesn't look anything special, but when you see it framed and properly filmed it is incredibly beautiful to watch - Shame there isn't more supplements

Well, I haven't watched Room or the Revenant yet, so hopefully those will redeem 2015.
I don't think it's been a vintage year, but it has been great. Carol is excellent, and far from Oscar bait. The trailer portrays a very different movie to the film itself, which plays at a pace not often seen in the mainstream American cinema. It's a beautiful and profoundly moving piece of work, so much so that I had to stand to one side and pull myself together following my screening last week!

Other films I have enjoyed in 2015.

Timbuktu
P'tit Quinquin
Girlhood
Mistress America
Clouds Of Sils Maria
Inherent Vice
Blackhat
Queen Of Earth
The Immigrant

After all the talk yesterday about I Married a Witch I watched it again last night. Just as good (actually better) than I remembered it. Veronica Lake is truly bewitching.

On a side note, I had gone the entire Black Friday weekend with my pocketbook intact. Broke that with the purchase from B&N (with 30% off coupon) of:

The Brood
The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kamp

Been on the fence about The Brood but the Great Owl's review tipped the balance.
