You have to factor in, however, that PP takes place at turn of the century Bengal and centers around a poor family. It is culture shock, so to say, via film watching.
I actually spent two months in India way back in the day.

So I don't think culture shock will be an issue with me.

Just don't know how I feel about spending $50 on a trilogy set where the films are relatively slow and not much happens plot wise.

I might end up loving them.

...but I might end up being more than satisfied with a single viewing.

OMFG...guess what's on TCM tonight!

...the APU TRILOGY!!

I can pick it up at B&N tonight for the last day of the 50% off sale, then watch the films on my dvr, then return the set if I don't like it.

It's another Festivus miracle!!!!

BYAHHHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just finished watching Black Christmas (1974).

I really wish that Criterion would pick this one up as a title, considering the vast influence that it has had on horror cinema since its release. The picture quality of the U.S. Blu-ray is good, considering the source, but I'd love to see what Criterion could do with it.

This is what I am hoping for!

Outstanding, underated film!

Perfect choice for Criterion.

Phoenix is a great film, I would love if this were true. I missed the confirmation of it if there was one but this would be a great release and would expose the film to an audience it otherwise would never have had.

Just irks me that I have to keep returning things because Amazon can't get it right.
I'd say probably 80% of my Amazon purchases turn out okay - my big beef with Blu-rays is when they don't include slipcovers (which of course isn't really an issue with Criterions). My Apu Trilogy problem was that there was a big horizontal slice in the spine - best guess is it was on the receiving end of a box-cutter within their warehouse and no one noticed it?

Though it's getting to the point where I have trouble relying on them for CDs; I can honestly count on Amazon Jewel cases to be cracked. (Easy enough to return, but still bothersome.)

Just about everything... Criterion-wise, a few that come to mind are A Room with a View, The Great Beauty, Harold and Maude, Make Way for Tomorrow, Rosemary's Baby, Weekend (2011), Y Tu Mama Tambien.

Re: films that made me teary-eyed, as far as Criterion, "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and "Il Sorpasso" both have very sad endings, and both are similar in that they hit you like a ton of bricks because the tone of both films is largely comedic. I was shocked that "Il Sorpasso" ended the way it did. I don't mind downer endings at all, but I didn't think the ending of "Il Sorpasso" worked particularly well. Overall, it is a great film though. I remember seeing "Y Tu Mama Tambien" initially when I was about 18 and really crying at the end. I've watched that film with a bunch of people at various times over the years and I can't remember anyone who hasn't cried at the end.

I wish Criterion would get the rights back to Kurosawa's Ran.

The ending to Y Tu Mamá También destroys me. Absolutely heartbreaking.

I thought use of Frank Zappa's 'Watermelon in Easter Hay' during the credit worked so very well... yes, I cried...

It happened to be my favorite Zappa song too...

So where exactly does Rosemary's Baby could make one cry?

It's such a delicate tale about one woman's fight to reconnect with her missing child.

I guess I've never seen it that way, I need to revisit, since it has been a long time, I just remember the terrifying ending, that is why I don't associate any emotion related to sadness with this film.

And quite the ending it is indeed, a real heartbreaker.

A recurring theme in dramatic works is the split between the parent and the child, especially when the child is old enough to fly the coop. The parent sacrifices all his or her life and it may seem like it's all for nothing, but it's truly one of the greatest moments of human existence.

The parent-child bond is incredibly powerful and every possible moment should be embraced and cherished.

I have never cried during Y Tu Mama Tambien and it is and has been one of my favorite films. I never even had a remote notion to cry. ...and I've seen it probably 5 times.

I cried during the rape scene in Pulp Fiction.

...true story.

This one too... I'm not sure if Scottie is being serious or not, but in a screening room full of 100 crying viewers giving me emotional cues, I still wouldn't cry during Rosemary's Baby.

On the other hand, "dad, you wanna have catch?" is enough to bring me to my knees.

I've only seen Pather out of the 3, but have seen a half dozen others dir. by Ray.. I wouldn't say that 'nothing happens' in a Ray film. In fact, he really had a gift for story telling and writing dialogue. He's no more 'out there' art film-wise than anybody else really.

Have you seen Tokyo Story or Late Spring by Ozu?

I like both of those films, very moving stories, but I don't love them enough stylistically to want to watch them more than once.

If I feel that way about those films, is there any reason to think I might feel the same way about the Apu Trilogy?

...or is it apples and oranges?

It's more the
[Show spoiler]dramatic irony
that makes me tear up / cry throughout...
[Show spoiler]like the scenes where they're decorating the nursery and she is so excited about the baby, totally unaware of what is going to transpire
