All this positivity coming from you in regard to Ray's films is making me want to crack my Apu Trilogy open, but I have to give it to my Grandma to give me on Christmas. Every year, she gives us grandkids each $50 to go out and buy something, but we have to give it to her so we have something under the tree to open at her house on Christmas day (I know, it sounds ridiculous, but she's 84 and has over 20 kids and grandkids to shop for. It's a lot easier for her this way.) I spent the $50 at the bar when some friends came in town, so now I can't watch it until Christmas lol

Checked that it is available online and each store within 50 miles of me (there should be about 20) has it in stock. Quote:
http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-big-city-1968 Both are great...I like The Big City more... On another note, I watched M recently (library DVD), I liked it so much...I cannot believe it's a 1931 movie...so much style...shame I never watched it before... ![]() |

Amid the witch's brew of genres making up its chemistry, what I find most different and most exciting about The Night of the Hunter is Laughton's brilliant shift in points of view. A noir whose dark story is seen mostly through the eyes of a child, with dreamy fairy tale-like elements, gothic cinematography, a contrast of innocence and evil in scene after scene, and exaggerated expressionism giving the audience a child's view of the beauty and frightfulness of the world. Laughton makes us feel two children's terror at being left alone to survive by their own wits, chased by a killer, while seeking a refuge in an adult they can trust. More importantly, you have multiple people taking their time to respond to your question and give you recommendations on film noirs, including me, and your response is to nitpick a post without a hint of thanks. You are not invited to my house for Christmas dinner until your manners improve. Last edited by oildude; 12-16-2015 at 05:02 AM. |

Other than wanting to be historically imprinted on page 7000 of this thread, I wanted to mention that I spent 3 nights watching every supplement to F for Fake and learned quite a bit about Orson Welles, Clifford Irving and Elmyr de Hory. One of my least favorite blind-buys turned into something fruitful with all this interesting content on art and autobiographical forgeries.

I would say, even though I only watched the film just that one time, that I got more enrichment and enlightenment out of the collection of supplements alone than by the movie. That 6 minute introduction by Peter Bogdanovich alone was essential viewing, to understand what Orson Welles was going for with F for Fake.

The Library of Congress has announced their 25 films to add to the National Film Registry. It looks like some Sirk and Sturges made it:

Some audiences don't understand overtures at all. It's frustrating when people talk during the Lawrence of Arabia overture. The movie has begun. Now shut up!

That's definitely a good way to phrase things. Like I had posted previously, it's interesting to get a "straight" documentary after seeing Welles's film.
