I recently decided to start collecting Criterions and I'm wondering what are the Film-Noir offerings that they currently have. I've already got the killing, ride the pink horse and m but this is the genre that is most interesting to me currently and I would like to add some more to my collection. Please offer any suggestions they would be appreciated. Thanks.

Blu Ray only, or do you still buy DVDs as well?

Kiss Me Deadly and The Killers are good choices (to me).

I didn't realize that I could search the blu-ray.com database based on genre and I saw Kiss Me Deadly and a few others that look interesting. I will be heading to B&N after work this evening to take advantage of the 40% off sale along with my 10% member discount. I'll be sure to look for both of those and I plan on getting the apu trilogy and a few more titles I've had my eye on as well.

I prefer to only buy Blu-Ray now but I've purchased a few DVDs recently that aren't available on BD.

Perhaps the March titles are a bit of a letdown and they're hoping to bury it within today's entertainment news (which will likely be Star Wars-focused, obviously) to not draw attention to a lighter month. Just a thought, but hope I'm wrong!

I've been avoiding watching Knife in the Water (convinced that a BD release is right around the corner) so that would be welcome too.

But I would be thrilled if they got The Tenant. I saw it for the first time about twenty years ago at The Music Box in Chicago and was absolutely mesmerized. The DVD is definitely watchable but I find the shortcomings very distracting and would love the chance to sink into it without reservation again.
I too have been avoiding re watching Knife in the Water for a few years now, due to the fact that a BD release was forthcoming. Mind you I did watch Le Samourai a few months ago... and no Criterion BD release is on the horizon.

What made me see The Tenant was the soundtrack. I bought the soundtrack for Polanski's Tess cause I needed the music for a film school project I was undertaking, and the CD also had the soundtrack from The Tenant which I found to mesmerizing and sensational. Tried to look for the VHS and nothing was forthcoming. Thankfully I had Sky Digital and I subscribed to FilmFour (which was brilliant at the time) and The Tenant was broadcasted one night at 1am and I duly recorded it. Absolutely loved it, so much so it became my favourite Polanski film and my favourite horror film for a long while.

I see you found the section on their website. Hopefully you can find the blus listed there. They have a nice little selection so far. There's quite a few more available on DVD from them, from the rest of the Dassins to stuff like Blast of Silence and Nikkatsu Noir. A lot of them are available from overseas labels on blu as well.

Also, some that aren't generally labeled as noir that you'll more than likely want to check in on:
Ace in the Hole
Pale Flower
The Naked Kiss
Pickpocket
A Man Escaped
The Night of the Hunter
Branded to Kill

Yes, Pale Flower was incredible. I remember loving that one when I first watched it...

I should and will see it again, though. I'd buy it if it was released, too. I've seen nearly every Melville film excluding Bob le Flambeur... Le Samourai ranks near the bottom of my list.

Had some time last week to watch my 2nd Chaplin film – Modern Times. I enjoyed it, but I think I prefer City Lights. I chuckled a few times which is enough for me. Just watching him move around is what entertains me. He was quite the graceful performer.

Not exactly Criterion related, but I saw John Huston’s Fat City for the first time. I had never heard of the film prior to the Twilight Time release. It’s a very good watch, although the character (very mild spoiler)
[Show spoiler]he hooks up with in the story is like nails on a chalkboard after a while
. I also re-watched The Wrestler a few days prior to that. I had no idea that Fat City would bear so many thematic similarities. Anyway, just thought that was interesting.

I also watched the first 45 minutes of Renoir’s The River. I’m pretty sure that I just wasn’t in the right mood for it. I put it on immediately after Fat City, so maybe it wasn’t a good pairing. I wouldn’t have known though. I’m going to watch it again some time and I’m fairly sure that I’ll enjoy it.

SPOILER:

[Show spoiler]There's a scene in The Honeymoon Killers where the Shirley Stoler character goes down to the basement to kill the child and the camera stays on Tony Lo Bianco's face, which reminded me of the scene in DI where Fred MacMurray kills the husband in the back seat and the camera stays on Barbara Stanwyck's face. In DI Stanwyck's face has a look of quiet satisfaction whereas in HK Lo Bianco's face has a look of horror and revulsion. The women are definitely the more dangerous sex in both movies.

I recently watched this video about Olympusat doing film restoration for their HD television stations and it made me wonder why more Mexican/Spanish/Latin American cinema hasn't come to Criterion. There must be some of these films that would fit well with Criterion, but granted, I'm not familiar with most of the films from these countries. Just seeing these clips in their restored glory makes me want to watch them. Link

Hoping for more Hideo Gosha from their stockpile, but like every month I think I will walk away in disappointment.
