Please do! I cannot say enough good things about it. The city based cinematography is visually beautiful. Music is used perfectly. The dialogue is not bad in a single place. It's great!

It's time to play a little game of blu-ray Thunderdome fellas:

The Big City or The Music Room?

Two Criterions enter...one Criterion leaves.

...I need strong opinions and I need em' now!!!!

Well based on the amount of titles you have, it is perfectly logical considering there is only 3 months of titles yet from 2016.

In my case my current average is 23 per year, so should be around 6 by this time, but I have only 3 on my sure list right now, which of course will change once I get to see some of the other titles.

I totally misread you regarding Apu Trilogy...I thought you won't like them...So I am afraid, I am very very afraid of recommending you 'The Big City'...

But Ray, It is my favorite Ray...so there you go...

Oh, btw...do you like Indian Classical music/dance? There is lots of them in The Music Room...if you like 'em...that may set the mood...

Wasn't aware that was on blu, appears to be very hard to find, and the Japanese edition costs too much

I used to have many more CC titles since starting my collection earlier this year but sold most of them on here after I watched them. What I have left are my absolute keepers. That said, what are some OOP CC titles you guys would like to get but haven't yet? For me its mostly DVD titles like Peeping Tom, Flash for Frankenstein, Sid & Nancy, Dead Ringers. I had almost all of the OOP BDs like The Third Man, Chungking Express, Pierrot le Fou & stuff but have since sold them.

There are two OOP titles that I absolutely want (and probably will get early next year, despite the price):

Pierrot le Fou

Last Year at Marienbad

It's finally happening. Day one purchase.

What a stacked month. I want every title, save for maybe the Blank.
Now this is what Criterion is all about, and what makes tuning in for announcement day so worth the effort. The gem, the home-run, that brings a real rush of disbelief and excitement! Bicycle Thieves is one of the handful of titles that I've been waiting and hoping for for years (along with Nights of Cabiria, the extended cut of Cinema Paradiso, and A Very Long Engagement among others). And here it is! Along with The Manchurian Candidate!

A Brighter Summer Day looks most interesting as well and I appreciate your comments, especially after looking at your collection. Think I might have to have a second look at Yi Yi as well.

The announcements are splendid!

I own the Criterion DVD of Bicycle Thieves, so this upgrade is an instant buy for me.

The Manchurian Candidate is another instant purchase, mainly because its a classic film and I love John Frankenheimer's films.

Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day looks fantastic and very intriguing. Most likely I'll purchase this too.

A Poem is a Naked Person is another purchase for me, as I am still fresh off watching all of Les Blank's films in that box set.

Paris Belongs to Us might be the only movie out of the bunch I'm not so sure of, but it deserves a rental!

Overall, an amazingly strong month for March!

March comes in like a lion...and out like a lion.

I just realized that they announced films by director of 2 of 3 criterions sitting at the top of my wishlist at this moment

Yi Yi (only other blu in collection by Yang director of A Brighter Summer Day)
Seconds (only other blu in collection by Frankenheimer director of Manchurian Candidate)

The other film is M

She was named Best Supporting Actress by the National Board of Review and also won the Golden Globe; I think her Honorary Oscar in 2013 was largely attributable to her unforgettable work in this film. Remember when you finally watch it that she was only three years older in real life than actor Laurence Harvey, who plays her son!
I remember it was a hard film to see following the Kennedy assassination. Terrific movie.

Wow. That's a really fascinating point, one that I had never considered. The Manchurian Candidate was released 13 months before Kennedy was assassinated, meaning that it could have conceivably still been playing in second-run houses in some parts of the country in November 1963.

I read that it was first broadcast on television in September 1965, not even two years after JFK was shot. That would have been more than a little creepy. Even now, it's still a film that (for me) has associations with the political turmoil that was so prevalent in the 1960's and 1970's.

Intriguing post, hoyt! Thank you.

I know Sinatra was both a friend of and a great admirer of Kennedy and I've read different versions of his involvement in getting both this and Suddenly put on the shelf following the assassination.

Looks like March 2016 is going to be a great month. I've had the rather lackluster Image Entertainment DVD release of Bicycle Thieves (or The Bicycle Thief, as it's titled on the Image release) for years, so I am beyond ready for an upgrade. Easily my favorite neorealism film.

And LEON FREAKING RUSSELL!!!!!!

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I've only seen A Brighter Summer Day in sub-VHS quality with two sets of burned in subtitles taking up the bottom of the screen. And it's still in my top 5 favourite films of all time. I am very very excited for this release

Great to see Rivette enter the collection as well, which would be a highlight in most other months.
