Rivette's Paris Belongs to Us is going to be the most expensive blu-ray (or DVD) purchase I've ever made because this is the release that's going to make me buy a region free blu-ray player. Ecstatic about this.

Inside Llewyn Davis
Gilda
Bitter Rice
The American Hero
The Graduate
The Kid
I Knew Her Well
Death by Hanging
The Emigrants / The New Land
Bicycle Thieves
A Poem Is a Naked Person
A Brighter Summer Day
The Manchurian Candidate
Paris Belongs to Us

Not to mention UK releases of A Touch of Zen, Deep Red and Farewell my concubine in Q1!

You know that there is an English friendly region free blu of A Very Long Engagement from France?

For the record, I love light sabres and the new film was

Tastes differ i guess but this has to be the most boring movie i've ever seen ... and i absolutely hated Catherine Deneuve's character.

Q1 is looking pretty expensive for me, too:

Inside Llewyn Davis
Gilda
The Emigrants/The New Land
The Kid
Paris Belongs to Us
The Manchurian Candidate
A Brighter Summer Day
Bicycle Thieves

I may just have to wait for the Criterion flash sale in February/March to get some of them.

In addition to the Criterion announcements yesterday, did anyone else see that Warner Archive will be releasing Hitchcock's The Wrong Man? What a great day of announcements yesterday!

I really like pairing Repulsion with Rosemary's Baby. Deneuve and Farrow are both so charismatic that neither does anything to really blow you away, yet you really are drawn into their characters. Rosemary is a masterpiece IMO, but I appreciated Repulsion as a front-runner to Polanski perfecting the madness taking place inside these apartments.

I haven't seen too many of Deneuve's films, but this was not a very different character from Belle du Jour. The dichotomy of her beauty and mannerisms/speech is fascinating to me. Very mysterious and different than other blond bombshells on the screen.

You need to scare up a copy of the British film The Dam Busters.

Since Taiwanese Cinema is typical around here at the moment, I thought I'd point out that this releases in a few days. Early work from both Edward Yang and Hou Hsiao-Hsien, as well as other Taiwanese new wave filmmakers, all on blu-ray and with (as far as I know) English subs for the first time.

Plus, Hou Hsiao-Hsien's The Assassin has its domestic blu release in the states next month.

It's a good time to be a fan on Taiwanese Cinema!

OK, first I should let you know a couple of things. I am a very big fan of Polanski in general, and I am an unabashed Deneuve fanboy. So, with that in mind ...

I think "Great" is the correct response. It's quite disturbing. Deneuve's performance is one of the best of her storied career. Polanski is on top of his game. The film looks amazing on the Criterion release. And it comes with some cool extras.

This movie is absolutely one of my favorites.

I loved the original Star Wars back when it was first released, and saw it umpteen times over the years. Ditto with The Empire Strikes Back. Return of the Jedi I've only seen maybe three times.

In the late 90s, I bought a used LD box set of the trilogy. Got to the end of the first, and decided that I was Star Wars'd out. On my next trip to the LD store, I traded the set back in. Haven't seen any of those films since, and haven't seen the "upgraded" versions of them.

Saw The Phantom Menace on a whim opening night (I was high from just having seen The Mummy. Thought it was ghastly. Watched Attack of the Clones on HBO one night while cleaning my apartment. Though it was just as ghastly (though I was impressed that Christopher Lee managed to survive the movie with his dignity intact). Still haven't seen Revenge of the Sith.

She Who Must Be Obeyed (a.k.a. the wife), however, is still a big fan, so we have tickets to see the new film on Tuesday afternoon. I probably wouldn't see it on my own, but I have to admit that Abrams directing, and Lucas having nothing to do with it is a plus for me. She's going to go crazy between now and then trying to avoid spoilers. Me, not so much, because I'm not a spoilerphobe.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, SWMBO indicated disappointment that I haven't picked up any of the SW films on Blu-ray. So I'm about to go over to Best Buy to pick up the recent SteelBook editions for her for Christmas. It'd be a bit cheaper to get the "Complete Saga" box, but I figure if I'm going to have the SW films on our Blu-ray shelves, I'm going to at least have snazzy-looking copies.

Since Criterion has released some Fox-owned titles, I don't imagine it's completely out of the question. I don't know how likely it will be, though.

Anyway, I liked the remake as well. In fact, I liked it more than the original. I love Tarkovsky's films, but Solaris is actually one of my least favorites of his.

I actually prefer the Soderbergh version as well. (Wasn't sure if it was OK to say that in public! ) But I do appreciate Tarkovsky's version as well.

Terrific month.

The Manchurian Candidate is mind-blowingly great.

This quote always gets me:

[Show spoiler]Raymond Shaw: You couldn't've stopped them, the Army couldn't've stopped them, so I had to.

Next up: Seven Days in May. Digipack release (1 blu+novel). This great film needs a blu-ray release!
