I am curious whether people who prefer subtitles over a dub sit so far away that the subtitles are in their central rather than peripheral vision, so they don't have to glance down to read them.
Dubbing is ridiculous. End of story.

I went into watching this film completely "naked" and I think it paid off. I love the fact that there was no glamorization in this movie about working class life. It reminds me a bit of Fish Tank too.
Not Criterion (yet, but it should be!) did you ever see 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days? That's a brutally realistic film, part of the Romanian New Wave, that just grabs your heart, rips it out, and stomps on it. It's one of my "favorite" films of recent years, but it is just horrible.

That's one film I would like to see Criterion take on.

I believe the original DVD already had the English dub too, as in La Strada. It probably would cost money to license it, but since they already had it they just included it on Blu-ray. That's my guess.

I keep expecting this and BEYOND THE HILLS to pop up. I'm still convinced they have both.

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 days, is already confirmed by the leak of the Apu Trilogy supplements, I hope they have Beyond the Hills too.

3 nights ago I watched The Friends of Eddie Coyle and frankly I did not enjoy the film too much. Add to that the dearth of supplements which sort of surprised me since I thought there would be more included. During the film, I kept glancing at the timecode on my blu-ray player to see when the movie would finally end. In retrospect I think its a brilliant film, but I wasn't fully prepared for this very "cerebral crime drama" (in my quotes).

2 nights ago I watched Two Days, One Night, and I was thoroughly engaged from start to finish. The first time I glanced at my blu-ray player to see where the timecode was, was about 68 min. into the movie, which means the film went by fast and I lost track of time. This is a fantastic "fable" as referred to of the Dardennes, and encompassed "a morality play inside a social commentary of the human condition" (in my quotes).

1 night ago around 2:15 am, I watched the 51 minute interview of the Dardennes bros. and the 22 minute interview of Marion Cotillard and Fabrizio Rongione and could barely keep my eyes open, but I learned even more than I ever expected.
Aside from Robert Mitchum's performance, which is outstanding, The Friends of Eddie Coyle isn't that great imo.

It's good...but nothing special.

I just got done watching Speedy and I must say I really enjoyed all the old Babe Ruth footage in the documentary. I was disappointed we only got 1 short this time and no commentary track to go along with the short. Any word on the Boxset of Harold Lloyd talkies that Criterion was supposed to be releasing?

If you only want positive encouragement, you might as well just buy everything that goes under your radar, because most movies in this thread will get more praise than negativity, with few exceptions.

You know that there is an English friendly region free blu of A Very Long Engagement from France?
You mean the 'Warner Blue-Line' release available on Amazon? Although the notoriously inaccurate Amazon 'product details' section lists this as 'all regions', the product title bar specifically states that the release is a 'non-USA format, Reg. B import" and one of the third-party sellers (the only option evidently available) states that, in regards to this release, "You have to be able to play zone 2 with a multizone player or zone 2 player or a computer." That, and the fact that I tend to avoid third-party sellers has pretty much scared me off.

If you know of another release or have any first-hand knowledge concerning this one I'd much appreciate hearing back. In the interests of relevance this would indeed make a wonderful Criterion release...!

Unless the one he mentions isn't listed on the site, I don't think there is a region free version, it clearly states here by two users that it is region B locked.

Does every criterion release have the official blue sticker on it? Because I ordered a bunch of criterions from the B&N black friday sale. All had the sticker except Ace in the Hole and L'eclisse.
So I scheduled a store to hold those titles so I could exchange mine.
When I arrived, the ones they pulled for me didn't have the sticker either. The lady assured me I was sent new copies.
So I went home with my original two.
When I got home and opened them, both were scratched. Not heavily, but I could tell these weren't new discs.
So I ordered replacements from B&N.com.
They accidentally sent me 2 of each.
And all 4 of those didn't have the sticker either.
So out of 8 blu-rays (4 Ace in the Hole & 4 L'eclisse), none of them had the sticker.
Did I just happen to open the two bad ones that might have been resealed? I opened one set of my replacements and they look totally fine.
Sorry for the long story, just really curious now.

I believe they all have the blue sticker. And yes, B&N does re-shrinkwrap I've gotten them myself. I try not to order online from them.

"Ace in the Hole" and "L'Eclisse" are both dual-format editions, so neither have the blue sticker, but rather the white dual-format sticker. I've received quite a few Criterion blu-rays with no sticker (at least 10). Sometimes it happens. As long as the disc and case are in good shape, I wouldn't worry about it.
