Question for Ozu lovers: Tokyo Story or Late Spring?

Thinking about picking up one of the two tomorrow.

I remember liking Late Spring just a little big more, but the digibook case for Tokyo Story is just beautiful.

...can you help me decide?

That's true. But usually those kind of relationships hinge on the fact that the negative part of the couple has redeeming qualities. Like some dude who is a miserable drunk most of the time, but is a swell guy when sober. Harry Fabian really shows no positive qualities. I've seen plenty of relationships where one half of the couple is miserable 75% of the time, but the other 25% keeps the other half coming back. I like that Widmark is so unlikable in the movie, but the Tierney relationship, in turn, didn't work for me. I should probably watch the extended British cut, as I have the old Criterion DVD with only the American cut. It's a very good film, and I've certainly seen many inexplicable relationships, but the Tierney-Widmark one, for some reason, didn't work for me

That sounds fair.

...maybe I should speak to a lawyer first?

By the way, I accidentally left some raw bacon out in my car today for about three hours and I've decide to cook it anyway for the pizza I'm making tonight.

So if you don't hear from me again, you'll know why.

...tell the world my story.

Late Spring.

Especially if you're going the Criterion route since you also get Tokyo-Ga.

But it's super close. Both are as good as it gets.

Finished both Lady Snowblood films, and after reqding a bit of reviews I was surprised that the first one is considered by much the better one.

I thought both are good and both suffer a bit from clunky fight sequences although on the second there were some pretty good ones too.

For me the better was second part, I thought its message was pretty strong and well delivered without havimg dialog preaching it, also the music was very good on both.

Late Spring for me, but I liked Early Summer even more, hoping for an upgrade soon.

Anyway you should also get Tokyo Story at some point, so it all depends on which you plan to see in the near future.

If you only want positive encouragement, you might as well just buy everything that goes under your radar, because most movies in this thread will get more praise than negativity, with few exceptions.
I think his post, in context with the one before it with the celebrating gifs, meant that he was happy and excited that everyone was encouraging him to get the blu ray, and then that comment came along and stopped him in his tracks.

Ray doesn't seem to mind negative views about movies (except for Top Gun)

I didn't like either,r but if I had to pick, I'd prefer Night and the City. Odd Man Out was painful to watch, since there's no real main (active) character. It just plods along from vignette to vignette.

I watched The Tale of Zatoichi for the second time. I started to watch the Zatoichi collection but only finished the first disc. I thought I'd start from the beginning. I didn't remember too much of it. I really enjoyed the movie.

Man...this is what makes blind buying such a maddening experience at times.

One guy says it's one of the best film noirs of all time and another guy says it's painful to watch.

I suppose I'll just have to man up and make an adult decision for myself.

...I hate that.

Well I went a little crazy tonight at B&N. I used 25% off coupons on everything in these photos. The regular Criterions came out to 16.19 each plus tax after the 40% off sale, 10% member discount and the 25% coupons. The Apu trilogy came out to $40.49 plus tax. All together I've purchased 62 Criterions since Tuesday with this sale.

I'm pretty much caught up (if that's possible, but I doubt it), but curious on your opinions on "Downhill Racer"? Haven't found a good price yet, but can wait til next B&N or criterion flash sale to pick up if you all recommend. Big Pollack fan.

Caught up til: Gilda, American Friend, Graduate, The Kid, Manchurian Candidate, A Brighter Summer Day, and Bicycle Thieves are released.

If it's dry-cured bacon you have no worries.

I strongly disagree. If all you saw was a plodding series of vignettes, well, I don't know what to say. No main character? Huh? Odd Man Out has a cast of well written characters, and is mildly an ensemble piece, but there is no doubt there is a main character. Even when he isn't onscreen, Johnny is all anyone talks about. I cannot understand how anyone can watch this movie and make that comment.

Odd Man Out is fantastic. A young vibrant James Mason gives one of his most memorable performances. This movie made me realize why he was considered one of the most gifted actors of his generation, and why I need to see more of his earlier films. All the actors in this are stellar.

Carol Reed's direction is masterful, and the story is intense. An IRA fighter named Johnny (although the term IRA is never used in the film), seeking to gather funds for the "organization", plans and executes a brazen daylight robbery with his gang. Things go wrong, gunfire is exchanged, and a wounded Johnny gets left behind as the gang makes a desperate escape. The rest of the film, to paraphrase one of the commentators in the special features, is a brilliantly executed story of a man who is slowly dying as he seeks a way back to safety amid a massive police manhunt. All this plays out mostly at night, in a beautifully rendered cityscape of shadows, falling snow, and streetlights. The cinematography is gorgeous.

And that ending. Wow! Not what I expected. Reed gives his audience a kick in the gut. That the same director was responsible for both Odd Man Out and The Third Man is one of the greatest achievements in cinema.

I loved The Third Man and The Fallen Idol as well, so its not Carol Reed, just the material that took me several sittings to get through. It does have a good reputation and is impeccably made, so it might just be me.

I quit reading after "Odd Man Out is fantastic", didn't want to see a spoiler, I recently purchased as a blind buy (but it's probably the safest ever). Was watchng Dial M For Murder in 3D earlier and kept saying: Damn, I need to watch Odd Man Out soon. Shit, and Ride the Pink Horse and Riot in Cell Block 11.

*Still need opinion(s) on Downhill Racer. Really want to like it.
