I must disprove. Three Kings was required viewing material in one of my film classes at PITT. Fantastic film.

You and everybody else!

I've been obsessed myself ever since I saw the film last Saturday night, and if there is only one criticism I have to say about it, JJ Abrams is not as original as he could be. He paid homage to Spielberg with Super 8, he paid homage to Roddenberry with Star Trek and now he paid homage to Lucas with Star Wars. I still loved the movie (giving it 3.75 out of 4), but the film gave me this vibe of trying hard to please fans, and not give enough surprises, as it was a loose retelling of Episode IV (and V).

I wondered about that myself. But if you look up stills from The Emigrants and The New Land online, the ship in the cartoon is totally different from the one Liv Ullman and company sailed in on. Accordingly, I still think the hint applies to The New World; the ship in that film matches the one in the cartoon almost exactly.

This post is actually full of more snobbery than the rest of this thread, telling people who they can and can't "knock" or what they HAVE to like. It's exactly the type of free discussion that makes discussion interesting in the first place. Just because one person considers it a classic means everyone everywhere should love it and identify with it the same way. Do you think film critics give every film by a director a great review just because they've made classics in the past? Nope. If you can't handle someone trashing a movie you love, then maybe film discussion isn't the place for you?

That was my problem with it. It felt too "been there, done that" for me. Too many of the same narrative beats. I didn't think the movie was terrible, but I have no particular desire to see it again. Well, maybe on Blu-ray when it comes out, as my wife (she loved it; she's planning to see it again next week with a friend) will undoubtedly want me to pick it up.

I have to say though, that while the 3D (we saw it in IMAX 3D) was neither here nor there for most of the film, there were a few isolated shots where it was really impressive.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens earns five stars from me simply for the fact that I have not had this much fun in a theater in a long while. It's probably my third favorite Star Wars film, behind The Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope. It straddles a line between being respectful of the old movies and being derivative of them, but I think that it was well done.

It's worth noting, though, that I was six when I saw the first film in 1978, and, therefore, right smack in the target audience. The problem with my generation is that we tend to put the Original Trilogy on too high of a pedestal, bècause the movies really are sort of daft when I really try to analyze them. We see the old Star Wars movies through rose-tinted nostalgia lenses, and, when new Star Wars movies are released, we hold them up to standards that the old movies never actually delivered.

When I revisited all six of the earlier movies on Black Friday, I was reminded that the Prequel Trilogy is not actually that bad, and the Original Trilogy is not actually that good. I just think that they're all awesome, though, because I grew up with them.

I'm going to be AFK until at least Friday night, if not Saturday morning, so I want to wish you all a great holiday -- secular and/or spiritual, according to your desires.

"I was reminded that the Prequel Trilogy is not actually that bad, and the Original Trilogy is not actually that good."

Have to respectfully disagree with this.

The prequels really are that bad.

And the original trilogy really is that good.

...even if it's not necessarily perfect.

You could be right. I don't really remember the ship from The Emigrants but the ship in the cartoon does seem to be from an earlier time period. I was just going with what's been announced so far.

I like the Ewoks. Especially the one that tells Leia, "Eat your mama!" (I know that the Ewok doesn't actually say that, but it sounds a heck of a lot like it.)

I just think that it's a notch below the other two. The Special Edition alterations had the most detrimental effect on Return of the Jedi sadly.

On Star Wars again.... I originally gave this 4 out of 4 stars but due to some of my comments above I demoted it to 3.75 after I digested more of this film over the last few days.

I have to admit though, that final sequence, which I will not spoil for those that haven't seen it yet, is one of the greatest in any Star Wars film. I had great fun and was on the edge of my seat... its just making me look so forward to the next film, written and directed by Rian Johnson. Anyone have any opinion on this guy by the way?

I realize now that many of us didn't care for the prequel movies because we didn't care about the characters! Yet, with The Force Awakens, many of our beloved characters we grew up with as kids and young adults, having waited 32 years to see them again, was beyond a thrill I can't even put into words.

Last thing for now... finally, no children in this new Star Wars film! About time!

When I left the theater, I was feeling more of a 3.87, but now am leaning more towards a 3.84.

Zatoichi on the Road was like three stories in one. A little hard to follow at times. The fight scenes are getting crazier. Thought it was an average movie.

Don't we hear children at one point? But at least you don't have to see them.

Really wish I loved TFA as much as pretty much the rest of the known Universe seems to. Enjoyed it, don't get me wrong. Well made and fun. But right now it feels like every other Abrams movie I have enjoyed. If it is anything like those I will buy the Blu, watch it a time or two, and struggle to get the itch to revisit. Something about his movies miss something that I can't put my finger on.

I was 8 when the original came out, so I am very much part of the SW generation as well.

Have you made it to Zatoichi goes to the Fire Festival? That one is almost a horror movie and may be my favorite of the bunch.
