He paid homage to Spielberg with Super 8, he paid homage to Roddenberry with Star Trek and now he paid homage to Lucas with Star Wars. I still loved the movie (giving it 3.75 out of 4), but the film gave me this vibe of trying hard to please fans, and not give enough surprises, as it was a loose retelling of Episode IV (and V).
Are you suggesting that JJ Abrams actually has the potential to be more original, even with the examples of all the homages in your list of Abrams films?

Abrams comes from a certain generation of filmmakers who grew up as unabashed fanboys of various pop culture "geek" franchises, so it's hard to escape the influence of those things when it's in your blood. Some of these fanboy directors are more creative/original than others, but they will always wear their fanboyisms on their sleeves, so they will always listen to the inner fanboy when all is said and done, and the inner fanboy always tells them to not mess with what 'worked' originally.

There's also the possibility that a 'hired' director for a huge multi-billion dollar franchise may not have as much creative freedom as you would like to hope, as studio heads are looking over your shoulder 24/7 to make sure you don't **** up their cash cow too much by taking too many risks.

Please guys take the Star Wars discussion to the Star Wars TFA thread in the Movies section where it belongs. Please don't derail this thread. Once it starts, it spins off for pages with talk that isn't even remotely Criterion related. There are no ewoks in the CC, sad to say.

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukkah, and a safe Holiday season to all. May Santa leave everyone lots of CC goodies tonight.

Every year between Christmas Day and New Years Day I always say Im really going to thin the herd with my Criterions (if I haven't watched it and LOVED it is gone) and every year I end up with at most 3-5 I kind of maybe possibly want to get rid of.

This year I swear its going to be my year.....

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!

I just got back from celebrating with the family. No Criterion Blu-rays from Santa this year, but I did get the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection sets as a gift, and that's sort of the same thing. Haha.

No Criterions here either, but this year is a weird predicament where I don't need any. Got the Chaplin Mutual Comedies from Flicker Alley instead, which is Criterion-ish enough.

Merry Christmas everyone. Best wishes to find Apu and not Jellyfish Eyes under your tree.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

The only thing I asked for from my wife was the Criterion art book. I'm expecting that under the tree tomorrow morning. My wife's grandmother always gives us money to buy our own presents so tomorrow I will be opening the Criterion Rock Box and Hitchcock set from her.

After watching lemons and veggies on the Hollis Frampton film the other night and wearing my House shirt all day today, the family officially thinks I've gone Criterion crazy.

I would like to wish everyone a merry and festive holiday!

Here where I am, where its supposed to be snowing, its a balmy 60-65 degrees for a high... someone needs to make a feature film on El Niņo already, and set it in a galaxy far away... I took another 5 mile run earlier in t-shirt and shorts (GreatOwl, I'm sure you're proud of me).

Wanted to mention also that I watched Le Silence de la Mer a couple of nights ago and watched all the supplements last night. Jean-Pierre Melville has always been a favorite director of mine, and his films often explore solitude and destiny. It was a film unlike any I've seen... the silence was deafening. It's the kind of movie I wish I could see more these days, but such films are hard to find. This minimalism by Melville is remarkable. It's making me want to revisit Le Cercle Rouge again, and I'm fortunate to own the blu-ray that is now out of print.

I feel tonight's movie though, in honor of Christmas, will be the first Die Hard movie. Sometimes I just need to have some fun! Yippee Ki Yay Muthaf*#%as!

Merry Christmas, guys

I wish you and your families all the best.

It looks like we won't have a White Christmas this year, but I am sure many of you will enjoy the unusually warm weather. Hopefully, Santa will bring you a special present -- and plenty of health. It is what matters the most.

My Grandma does the same thing, so I'll have the Apu Trilogy waiting for me tomorrow!

My family totally gets me.

My mom and dad got me The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and Odd Man Out, and my Grandma decided to surprise me with an early gift of The Quiet Man (in addition to The Apu Trilogy I'm getting tomorrow) on the condition that I watch it with her this weekend. From me, she got Red River, Ben-Hur, and The Artist. I love having a cinephile for a Grandma ☺

And no, I had no qualms about opening my copy of Odd Man Out (just kidding, Ray! I've already seen it lol)

Yeah, it's been real tough battling this Pittsburgh weather. Nice to see a fellow 'Burgh resident on here. Nice collection you have! Merry Christmas to you all
