I have a great suggestion for getting a lot of their coupons. A buddy of mine seemed to get a lot of coupons too and I rarely did though we're both members and spend a lot there. He told me to go to their site and keep a few movies in your cart. Don't check out, just keep them there. Once I started doing this I received many more coupons and use each and every one I got. I assume keeping those movies in that cart warrants the company giving coupons to entice you to purchase them. Good luck.

Thanks for the recommendation, I got them on chat - she seems to think she has a solution. My membership isn't up until August, so we'll see how it goes. Although, I may try your strategy. Either way, I get another 50% sale before then

I hate that B&N book prices are less on the website and they are more if you buy in the store, and you cant buy online and pick it up at your local B&N, but i was able to return a website book to exchange for a better copy at my local B&N.
I got a $50 gift card as well!

But I was told the next sale is probably in June at the earliest.

I know myself.

...there's no way I can wait that long.

A lot of National Film Registry titles are on Criterion Collection.

https://www.criterion.com/lists/5113...iterion-titles

Does this mean we can expect Maverick and Iceman on Criterion?

Right now I find myself filled with an immense feeling of pride.

Pride in myself.

Pride in this forum.

Pride in my country.

I always knew that if I just stayed the course and kept quoting random lines from Top Gun in bars and grocery store checkout lines, that one day this day would come.

...right now I'm just proud to be an American.

A well-made point. A well-made point.

Maverick and Kelly McGillis -- WTF am I thinking?! OF COURSE I need them on CC!

I love watching Blast of Silence around Christmas time, although I skipped it this year, since I've a lot on my plate when it comes to movies.

This film conveys the true classic-era film noir bleakness through and through, but it also has a dynamic vibe that showcases its place in a world that was moving forward into the 1960s. There is a rather amazing bongo drum jazz bar sequence that makes me think of the dive in Bell, Book, and Candle (1958). The second-person narration is still quite striking.

Also watched City Lights for 1st time today. It moved to the top of my Chaplin silent film list. I prefer it slightly more than Modern Times. However, as great of a physical comic as Chaplin was I think his later films give the benefit of the physical comedy and his fantastic dialogue. I can't wait to see The Kid because I have a feeling it will move ahead of this for #1 on my silent list.

No. It shouldn't have. Rightfully, it didn't. And wouldn't win even if the winner was selected today - some 18 plus years later.
Respectfully,

@ my buddy RayJ - please, for the love of God do not ever buy a full price CC title @ b&n even if you do have a gift card. Please wait 'til July so we can enjoy you reporting back on 3 titles instead of just 1!

Im still really annoyed that Kim Basinger got an oscar for her mediocre performance. Nothing of note whatsoever in that and she barely did more than just okay.
Totally okay with the screenplay oscar though!

My only problem with L.A. Confidential is that hardly any of the male characters are wearing fedoras. Danny DeVito's character is the only one who wears a fedora, in fact.

Watching L.A. Confidential is sort of like watching a western where none of the characters are wearing cowboy hats.

This reminds me that I've been meaning to revisit Ride the Pink Horse.

City Lights (and its ending) is a great litmus test to use if you want to figure out if someone is a cynic or a person who has faith in humanity. The ending is either utterly moving or utterly shattering depending on where you stand.

Fun fact: The ending to City Lights is Emma Stone's favorite movie ending of all time. Who says young actors these days don't care about film history? (I'm looking at you, Jennifer "I hate silent movies" Lawrence)

There's just zero chance of that happening bro.

Just ZERO CHANCE.

It's like asking a wild animal to save a piece of raw meat until morning.

It's like asking a member of Congress to stop taking bribes.

It's like asking Charlie Sheen to stop using cocaine and banging porn stars.

I'll probably end up getting Persona or Tokyo Story and put the last ten dollars towards a blu-ray copy of Double Indemnity.

I hate myself for having no self discipline.

But I've accepted that it's who I am.

...I've come to terms with that.

It made the Tramp an extremely endearing character. Hopefully I'm not disappointed in The Kid but I'm expecting the relationships to win me over even more than City Lights.
The ending was certainly one of the best. Although the Great Dictator will always be my favorite Chaplin ending and maybe my favorite of all-time.

BTW Jennifer Lawrence is a Louisville fan which tells you all you need to know about her intelligence.

I love silent films but I can understand why other fans, including J-Law, can't.

Oh, and SkyAntoine -- don't even get me started on either of your wretched state's teams.

A fan or a casual viewer, yes, I can understand it. But I think someone with a deeper interest in film--and especially someone who works in film--could learn a lot about visual filmmaking, editing, and--for an actor--body language, in silent films.

IOAW seems much lighter in comparison, but delves into the psyche during an artists time dealing with his woman and his art. Many label it 'lesser' Antonioni, but over the years it has maintained its status as one of his best films for me. So, to answer your question watch both of them when you have ample time to do so, they are both worth shutting your phone off for.

The fact that IOAW has some brief full frontal nudity doesn't really make it much different IMO.

BTW, the Criterion version of this movie has an odd reddish contrast boost compared to international versions. A lot of people favour the Gaumont release from France.
Whelp, there go my plans for a double feature.

The gist is that C&W is an emotionally-heavy film I should save for a day off from work, and IoAW is a bit of a diamond in the rough.
I appreciate the insight guys, thanks. I'll report back with my thoughts once I watch through both films.

That British guy was great...his name was Brett. I saw him in his last week there before he resigned out of frustration with B&N. I remember being sad he was leaving cause I was just getting to know the guy as a regular "50% sales customer".

What you need to do in order to receive the coupons and gift cards again is resign up again using a different email address and you'll start receiving everything again. I used to renew and during that time I didn't get the coupons anymore but after I let my membership expire, I just created a new membership and everything was cool again.
