Ray.. I'm here to help you, buddy.

ship 'media mail'. there's no way that 3 CC's weigh more than 2 lbs.
if my #s are current, 2lbs media mail costs $3.17 plus $1.05 for tracking. that's $4.22.

..and on eBay.. look at 'sold listings.' there might not be one now for less than $50, but they routinely sell in the $30 to $40 range.

By the way, continuing my previous post about romantic period films, does anyone know if Criterion could release The Age of Innocence?
Is it a possibility (I mean with rights and stuff) or has there been any hint?
Or could it be Twilight time (I had mentioned in the past that I'd prefer TT for the isolated score because it's sublime).
I can't wait any longer for this exceptional film.
I know about the European versions but I have a hunch the US version would be even better with extras and stuff...

That is help that I will gladly accept.

I could spend between $4 and $5 as long there's a tracking number. That's not so bad.

My only issue is that's he wants Don't Look Now to be one of the three and I'm not sure I want to give that one up as part of a three-title trade. I actually like it. Might be willing to give up with one other title, but two others makes it difficult to pull the trigger.

I feel the same way about the Scottish and Irish pipes. I think it must be genetic......half my genes are Scots-Irish so the glorious sound of the pipes resonates with me at some deep primeval level (haha).

I also find the sound of traditional Japanese instruments to be mesmerizing, especially multiple taiko drums performing together. I love the sound of the koto too.

I've got a guy offering to trade a like new copy for three of my Criterions I'm trying to get rid of on the Criterion trade thread.

I'm a huge fan of Le Samourai, but it's been quite a while since I've seen Army of Shadows. I don't really remember much about it, aside from it being pretty long and somewhat difficult to follow at times.

But I'm intrigued by idea of getting my hands on an OOP Melville Criterion.
I blind-bought it years ago. I figure a movie about the French Resistance had to be great (especially based on first-hand accounts). On the first watch, I found it extremely slow, long, drab, and kinda boring.

I slated it as a movie I wanted to get rid of, so I started to watch it again. Even though I didn't watch the whole thing the second go-around, something clicked better - I started to dig it more. It is slow, but it had great tension in certain scenes. It stood out to me more, and I decided to go ahead and keep it.

I take it as one of those movies that's good as long as you're in the mood for it.

EDIT:
Sounds like you're working out the trading details, hope it works out for ya.

Huge thumbs up for Army of Shadows. I used to always include it on any Criterion recommendation list until it went OOP. It is a well done film that delves into the dark heart of the French Resistance. I am biased though because I love all things Melville.

Even though it is a barebones release its nice having everything together in such a nice box, and the book is lovely!

Plus it's only $16 per film which I'd say is worth it for the film itself - bluray would have been nice though lol

Just finished a first watch of Rashomon and it's definitely my least favorite from Kurosawa. I wasn't expecting a samurai slasher but I was expecting to be entertained and instead found myself watching the clock, waiting for it to be over.

Now I just have to decide whether to pick up Charulata now, or wait until July?
July is a helluva long time. Surely other places will have similar deals in the meantime.

The one thing I've learned about sales, though, is that eventually, someday, you eventually end up paying back the money you saved on super-deals, and vice versa. For every jaw dropping deal I got on some purchase, it is balanced by the times where I surely overpaid for something. It is the circle of life...consumer life, that is.

I couldn't rationalize AK100 myself, even when it was in print during the Criterion flash sales. I own every Kurosawa film either on dvd or blu, so the money would just be for the book and packaging.

I ended up finding a copy of the book by itself on Amazon for $25, which worked just fine for me.

I'm sure it looks nice on the shelf though!

I missed the Godard debate?!

Oh, poo...

I'll just add that while 60's Godard is often his most praised era, and his 70's stuff has never really been my thing, I really think 80's Godard has more merit to it than most people are willing to admit. Hail Mary, and Every Man For Himself are grand, nearly on par with works like Masculin Feminin as far as I'm concerned. There's even a charm to his version of King Lear starring Molly Ringwald where Godard apparently only read the first page of the play and decided he'd make his own adaptation. It's fun to watch Godard as a mumbling scientist with a bunch of cords on his head, though I'll admit the film is very cold, incomprehensible, and definitely drags almost through the entire feature whenever he or Molly aren't on screen.

I really hope I still have King Lear on an external hard drive somewhere... I don't see that getting any sort of proper release any time soon. C'mon Olive Films, Cohen, etc. Help a dude out.

I personally wouldn't make the trade, but I'm very conservative w/ spending money on my collection and very patient for better opportunities. If I don't see you make a follow up post that you made the deal, I'll keep an eye out for another copy on eBay or somewhere else and I'll let you know via PM.

Here's the thing though...it'll be far cheaper to trade it for three Criterions, than to pay as low as $35-40 on ebay.

It's only his request for Don't Look Now that's tripping me up.

This fellow is savvy.

I haven't had this much on the line with a trade since the 6th grade when Billy Winslow tried to seduce me into parting with my Dwight Gooden rookie card for a 1985 Don Mattingly and two packs of Big League Chew bubble gum.

...what an agonizing decision that was.
