You mean Joan of Arc DIES?!?!?! Aw man, what a downer!
There, now I did it! Seriously though, anyone who whines about "spoiling" an ending to the retelling of a historical incident that everyone over 10 years old should know about is a whiny baby.

Went to University at Buffalo. Had Professor Diane Christian and took a class with her called Heaven, Hell, and Judgment. As part of the class, we watched A Matter of Life and Death at the Dipson Amherst Theater. Her film class with her husband, Professor Bruce Jackson, is incredible. The film lists they come up with each year are fantastic.

You don't even need to take any classes to enjoy watching films with Bruce and Diane.

Saw 45 Years last night and it was just wonderful. I hope Haigh and Rampling in the closet means that it'll be getting a release next year.

Terrible thing happened earlier...

On a whim, 2 friends and I decided to drive down to a local cinemaplex to see the new Tarantino film The Hateful Eight in 70mm, but we found out it had sold out 2 hours before the showing. It was a 10:45 showing too.

Turns out this is the only screening room in my city/county that is showing it in 70mm and it only seats 178 people with an average sized screen. Pathetic.

Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister (December 24, 1945 – December 28, 2015)

I left a note in a different corner of the site yesterday, but I would like to leave one here as well. I am sure there are a few people that care.

One hell of a man has died. A true legend, not a pretender. RIP Lemmy.

If you get a chance, see Lemmy. It is the truth.

Picked up the big chill from Deep Discount for just over $20. Was one I've been wanting and it's very expensive on Amazon. Any comments on this release?

You do know that there was no original music score, right? Carl Dreyer intended that the film should be watched in utter silence. The score used on the Criterion release is a special edit of the album Voices of Light (1995), composed by Richard Einhorn as an inspiration / tribute to the Dreyer film.

If Criterion ever had competition, would it be the Twilight Time label?

Looking at their website, they've released a lot of really cool movies that are otherwise unavailable from any other video distributor. They produce different colored jewel cases and supply beautiful and original artwork too. They seem to put a lot of work and effort into making sure their redistributed films look and sound good, but the only problem is, many of their titles lack quality supplements, making them bare bone releases, but good ones at that, often being limited to 3,000 copies, making them truly "limited edition" and collectible. And like Criterion, they are not cheap, mostly priced at $29.95 on their website.

Does Twilight Time offer sales like Criterion does though? Does anyone admire this distributor too? http://www.twilighttimemovies.com/

I like Twilight Time. Releases are a little pricey, but they do have a couple sales per year where you can pick up select releases for $19.95. I think I've picked up about 25-30 of their releases for $19.95. They've released a lot of great films. The supplements are not close to what you see on Criterion, but occasionally they'll throw something in there that's excellent. On the "Equus" disc, for example, there is a fantastic full-length documentary on Richard Burton. If you haven't started digging into TT's stuff, I'd definitely recommend it. I'm almost always impressed by the A/V quality as well.

All the big indy labels do really good work IMO, just depends on what kind of films you're into. Criterion is mostly high-brow, Kino and TT release a mixture of high and low brow, while Shout Factory does a lot of horror fare. Although on their non-horror arm, Shout has released some really excellent films. I've picked up a ton of releases from all of them and I'm a big fan of all of them.

I'd say that the Criterion's closest competitor (in the US) would have to be Cohen Media Group:

I resisted buying Twilight Time titles for a while, but once I succumbed, I succumbed. I have about 50 of their titles (out of ~180). Fortunately, the titles of theirs that sell out the quickest are among the ones I want the least (70s/80s horror films).

Kinda sorta. They only relatively recently started selling their titles directly from their own website. Before that, they were selling only through an etailer called Screen Archives Entertainment. Spring of last year, TT & SAE had a Third Anniversary sale of $10 off selected TT titles. They did another one this past spring. And just recently, SAE had a similar sale on their own.
I don't know if there will be another Anniversary sale next spring.

And the latest releases contained this slip inside.

But of course they do. If you didn't restrict to region A, Arrow has been putting out amazing releases in the past few years, especially in boxsets. Within region A, the Cohen Media group has put out some terrific stuff from Euro film-makers on blu. In fact TT is less of a Criterion competitor because they do not have any restoration capabilities and are entirely dependent on external sources for the quality of their transfers.

Thanks for the info.

I like some of these films that TT has come out with recently, especially Born Free and 1984. Additionally, a movie I love from Oliver Stone, Salvador, is available through them too that I can find nowhere else. And there's also American Buffalo which I remember enjoying when I first watched it.

I see they also released Alamo Bay, from one of my favorite French directors, Louis Malle. Has anyone seen this film?

I'd definitely agree that Arrow is the closest competition to Criterion. Their releases are uniformly stellar. The releases of "La Grande Bouffe", "Society" and "The Battles Without Honour and Humanity" box were three of the best of the year.

Another indy label that does incredible work when they do put releases out is Grindhouse. Their releases of "The Big Gundown" and "The Swimmer" are beyond stellar. They also released a couple of long-lost Duke Mitchell gangster films in remarkable overall packages.

All of these indy labels do a great job though IMO and am more than happy to patronize them. It's been said before, but this really is the golden age to be a film buff/collector.

Great, thanks for more info, jayembee.

I can see how a person might get addicted to collecting their movies... They use mostly clean artwork for their front covers of releases and offer a variety of films.

I see they love releasing many Brian De Palma films (I counted at least 4 titles they have), as well as many from Woody Allen too. The only TT film I own is Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Looks like I'll prob. order from their website soon enough!
