EDIT: It was King of Hearts. My bad.

It could still be Queen of Hearts (1989) or Queen of Hearts/La Reine des Pommes (2009). Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I don't see Dr. Strangelove in these clues. What does an angel have to do with the film? The film already has an excellent release on blu-ray.

I definitely see "Exterminating Angel" more in that clue, but does Criterion do clues for DVD upgrades? A lot of these Criterion clues seem to be literal references to the title of a movie. Like an angel exterminating something by riding in a bomb. I guess the only way it could be more literal is if the angel were wearing an insect exterminator's uniform. Except in cases like "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" where it is impossible to convey the title with images in a literal way, so they just put Warren Beatty there.

What about the whole JFK angle though? There's something known as the Kennedy Kards which were Kennedy themed playing cards, and Jackie was the Queen of Hearts. Combine that with the vote for JFK button and the car and it just has to be JFK related in my opinion. JFK (1991) would seem a bit too obvious there, though it is currently OOP from Warner.

With regards to the Strangelove clue. The bomb in question looks very similar in in design to the one from the film. Plus the imagery of someone riding the bomb is an iconic part of the film. Now I do think it's a double clue for something Angel related like The Exterminating Angel

They do. I recall Naked Lunch being in a New Year's clue. Amongst others.

Speaking of wishful thinking, an angel would have to be pretty drunk to ride an atom bomb, no?

The rights have gone to Fox.

You sure? I had brought up the fact that JFK went OOP in the Regency thread, but Michael Reuben seemed to imply that it wasn't one of the titles that Fox had acquired.

He said this with regards to a list I had made that included JFK:

Everything on this list stays with Warner, including "Free Willy".

The queen of hearts clue may be for "JFK." In November of '63 the campaign for the '64 election would have been underway. The queen is seated on the same side of the limo that the First Lady occupied. The President is missing. The car is a 4-door convertible, but the car doesn't have the "suicide doors" that the 4-door Lincoln convertibles of the time had.

So wouldn't it be neat if the Kennedy tease was Executive Action? Who doesn't want Executive Action on Blu-ray?

Even if it's a clue for Exterminating Angel, I think that Criterion must've been aware of how blatant a reference it is to Dr. Strangelove. What other movie has a character riding a bomb like that? So they must've made that reference to at least gain more attention and have people talk more about it.

An Angel of Death might ride an a-bomb down, especially one that nearly didn't get out of the bomber.

Someone on CF mentioned Fox owns it. I'm trying to locate a link and so far I can only find it on Fox's German site.

Guess it makes sense given that the disc is OOP. "Strangelove" is probably the Kubrick film least in need of another release. "The Shining" falls in that same boat. I mean, if you're going to re-release a Kubrick film, go for "Barry Lyndon", "Lolita" or "Eyes Wide Shut".

It's obviously a combined clue. What does a baby carriage have to do with McCabe and Mrs. Miller?

If it is for JFK, I'm hoping its for the original theatrical cut... I prefer it to the director's cut that's on blu-ray, especially the John Larroquette scene.
