Yeah, like cringey and meh but you stick around to see whodunit.

It definitely works as a commentary on media in the modern age, I agree. A very short commentary, maybe a few sentences worth

That's quite a few sentences more than most Hitchcock movies

Sure, some films definitely wouldn't look good in Technicolor. But on the other hand, some films do. A lot of Technicolor films are geared towards making the best use of Technicolor while black and white films are geared towards making the best use of black and white, so of course when one sees a film for the first time, it usually looks best as the way it is presented to you because it's made with that in mind. You don't think, "Hmm, I wonder what this would look like in color," just as one doesn't typically think "I wonder what this Technicolor film would look like in black and white."

Would The Red Shoes look as good in black and white? Jason and the Argonauts? All That Heaven Allows? The Thief of Bagdad?

I mean, I don't mean to badger you on this. Obviously you either like it or you don't, I just curious to know if there's a holistic reasoning, or if it's more of a just reflex instinct to dislike it.

I don't know if that was the Japanese equivalent to Technicolor or Cinemascope. ? not sure.
Kwaidan is great.

And the color is absolutely essential to the appeal of the film. I don't know what kind of color process was used, but it looks better than technicolor imo.
There at least two technicolor films that I like--Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind.

...there are exceptions to every preference.

I actually felt social media should have played a bigger part in the film. Gone Girl was mostly limited to talk shows and TV to gauge and control public opinion. In that sense, the media criticism felt rather dated to me.

No, I just see Gone Girl working best as a polished trashy thriller with some playful narrative fun on point of view.

The Samurai trilogy is an example of films shot in technicolor that would have looked better in black and white.

The Red Shoes is a good example of a film where color was obviously an essential part of the movie.

...I still don't like the technicolor look of it.

You guys should read the book, it's pretty good. I really enjoyed the film, and I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously.

Charlie Brown's friend??? Charlie Brown is the one who had a little trouble with the scissors and got rocks for tricks-or-treats.

Unless you're saying the GG screenplay had just the right number of holes.

In that case, you're good.

I don't understand this argument. Seven Samurai was filmed with black and white in mind. Why would it be in technicolor?

Most films are made with the format in mind. It's why films like It's a Wonderful Life look so ghastly when colorized.

What?! The Samurai trilogy is much better in color. Can you imagine the last showdown being in B&W? With the sunrise and it's importance for that scene, it had to be in color. It's a georgeous movie, and while I love B&W films, it just wouldn't have worked as well for The Samurai Trilogy.

I don't particularly like the Criterion version's red boosting of the colors, personally, and the super greenish tint of the Agfa color of most Japanese DVD/VHS presentations of the films doesn't seem quite right to me as well. I can see what you're saying that it should be in color, but I don't think I've ever seen any home version that looked the way it probably intended, and I could realistically picture the trilogy in black and white and I wouldn't like it too much less.

Be careful about spoiling endings. I haven't seen this and now I know there is going to be a final fight scene between samurais. Thanks a lot.

Does anyone think The Last Wave will ever get the BD treatment or should I just buy the DVD? I've been holding out but I really want to see it...

Here's that cap in b/w. It's still a great shot. Notice how it adheres to the rule of thirds. The original is still the best.

A way to cope with technicolor is to turn down the color control. 25% to 50% reduction works for me.

It probably won't get the blu treatment until after you buy it, so if you want it on blu the best course of action is to buy the dvd.

lol, I was never sure if the rule of thirds actually applied to cinema. Seems like lots of movies don't bother (I found Life of Pi especially distracting that way, the ocean and sky seemed to cut off half of the picture most of the time. I started to wonder if that movie did it on purpose for some thematic reason, or if filmmakers just didn't care).

Scene in the screenshot looks great in my eyes.

Japanese cinema pre-80s tended to follow rule of thirds more than other countries. That's why even the crappiest Japanese films back in the day still at least looked great from shot to shot. You look at any number of sleazy Nikkatsu pink films and you'll find...yup, rule of thirds still in effect even there.
