Two words: Hulu Plus. All of these Samurai movies are available for streaming so you can try before you buy. I think Hulu offers a free trial, but I don't remember if it's for a week or a month.

Unless something goes wrong, I just scored a digipack copy of The Third Man blu-ray on a local site for $42 . I'd say I did well, even though it is still a fair bit of money.

EDIT: got it.

I followed up Downhill Racer by watching another "Gene Hackman starring as coach" film, Hoosiers (1986).

I had fun revisiting Hoosiers for the first time since my late 1980s high school days. It's really amazing how different these two movies are in tone, although I like both of them equally. Hoosiers is certainly the more conventional "likable underdog hits the big time" sports film.

Of the three I don't have, and would order, two are "temporarily out of stock" and the third says "will ship in 10-13 business days".

I ordered Sword of Doom earlier. I can certainly wait for them to get it back in stock. Still beats waiting for the next B&N sale to get it for around the same price.

Dennis Hopper always gets me in Hoosiers. I have a couple of Uncles who were "that guy" and he totally nailed it.

I just ordered The Hidden Fortress. I'm not a huge Samari film fan, but I love this one and Kuroneko, which I already own. After what people are saying about Harakiri, though, I may need to look into that. I will check it out on Hulu.

Harakiri is great. It did take a second viewing to appreciate its complexity though. I watched my BD of The Hidden Fortress for the first time recently on my b-day (12/27) and the transfer is amazing. The film has endless replay-value for me, just great pacing, story, and humor.

I was watching The Hidden Fortress on Hulu a couple of weeks ago and wondering why I hadn't bought it yet. I was going to wait for the BD only release in March, but this price is too good and it means I have a DVD to give someone.

I will keep that in mind about Harakiri, and if I like it enough to think it may grow on me...beckoning me to watch it more...I may go ahead on buy it before the end of the week.

Just a small point: Gravity was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, not Iñárritu.

It's interesting how there are very few directors who can somehow balance amazing spectacle with amazing story. Was the story spectacular in the spectacle called The Revenant? Obviously not so much according to many of us. Iñárritu makes up for thin plot with thick visuals, and this is a common occurrence in cinema with certain directors who achieve too much of one thing but not enough of the other. I challenge anyone to have a different opinion of this.
I haven't seen The Revenant, so I can't comment. But I think it's bordering on the cray-cray to imply that Birdman didn't have a great script and story, with some very interesting thematic elements.

The hidden fortress always sells out on Amazon.

As I've said before, hope we get an upgrade for Samurai Rebellion.

Jesus, I am so effin' embarrassed. Sundays are days my brain isn't on completely. I'm hoping I forget about that blunder.

I went ahead and deleted my own post (first time for me), cause it was so bad.
