I had a much warmer reaction to it than I did TTW the first time I saw it. For me it was the different locations and types of shots that helped make the style of the film more engaging. There are many pensive landscape shots and walks around outside and in the house, but there are also car rides, parties and an experimental B&W bit that was fantastic as I mentioned earlier.

A Criterion release of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (4K scan!) has been confirmed by Criterion's technical director, Lee Kline!

When we were done for the day, I told Vilmos that I wanted to work on McCabe & Mrs. Miller with him. He was very enthusiastic about it and said that he had never been able to do a remaster of this film. He told me what kind of look that film needed and said he was sure that taking a 4K scan from the negative and having the right colorist would really treat this film well. He wasn’t intimidated by new color-grading technology. He embraced it. A few months went by and I had the negative scanned. I kept calling Vilmos to book some time for him to come in and work on the grading with me, but he wasn’t answering my calls. I soon learned that Vilmos had been sick but was doing better—and that he had gotten my messages and was really excited about working together.

Army of Shadows is my favorite Criterion Blu-ray. (At least until a proper Criterion Blu-ray of Le Samouraï comes down the pipes)

I'll be the first to say, however, that Army of Shadows demands more than one viewing. I loved the basic framework of the story after my first viewing, but I held the movie in even greater esteem after going through the special features and after understanding the historical specifics of the time period that are referenced in the film.

So I put on Something Wild, one of my favorite feel-good movies, to get my mind off of David Bowie's death, and of course there's a scene right in the middle of the movie where the band plays Fame which I totally forgot about.

That's great news about McCabe & Mrs. Miller, the only bad part is knowing that it's coming but that might be all the way in December. I've seen it before, but it was several years ago.

I remember it being a challenge to get through.

But I think I've matured a great deal as a film viewer since then.

...I'm confident I will like it this time.

I'm so glad I got The Man Who Fell to Earth before it went out of print. What is up with Lionsgate only offering standard definition digital copies and DVD-Rs of a title like this? Talk about dropping the ball!!
