Actually, the only three Best Picture nominees that I've seen so far are Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, and The Revenant. They're all good, but Fury Road is the best. I probably should see The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Room, and Spotlight, but I just...I just don't feel like seeing any of those. |

Is there a possibility of Goerge Miller getting director win? While I haven't seen The Revenant, it appears it is the favorite for Director and Picture again, but I am not sure if the same director has won this two prices two years in a row.
On the other Hand, Mad Max for Picture is almost guaranteed to not win, since no actors are nominated. Agree about the sentiment about no Ridley Scott nomination ![]() Edit: Just found out it has happened only two times: John Ford (The Grapes of Wrath, 1940 and How Green Was My Valley, 1941) Joseph L. Mankiewicz (A Letter to Three Wives, 1949 and All About Eve, 1950) Not consecutive Best Picture though. Last edited by pedromvu; 01-14-2016 at 05:14 PM. |

But I never understand when people say stuff like, "Well x hasn't happened before (or in a long time), so I can't see it happening here." I mean when Miguel Cabrera won his third straight batting title in the AL, he was the first right hander to do it since the 1920 (Rogers Hornsby). Jennifer Lawrence is the youngest person to ever be nominated for 4 Oscars. New stuff is always happening. And the Academy is over 6,000 people. It's not like they get together and decide not to vote for x because he won last year, or whatever. ETA: I've only seen Mad Max: Fury Road of the Best Picture nominees, which is ironic since I thought it was fairly awful. I gave it a C+ grade, but that was really only based on Charlize's and Hardy's performances. I thought that the film itself was slightly boring and almost totally empty and devoid of anything resembling character or theme or ideas. The best 2015 films I have seen so far -- Phoenix, Macbeth, Queen of Earth, Diary of a Teenage Girl -- never stood even the slimmest chance of being nominated for anything. But that's the way it is. BTW I have only seen two of the Best picture nominees, but pretty much agree with you on Mad Max, although I probably would rate it a bit higher if only for the audiovisual spectacle. Last edited by pedromvu; 01-14-2016 at 05:53 PM. |

Somewhere Tommy Wiseau is telling his poor minimum wage assistant... "See I told you Lisa The Room is amazingly brilliant piece of cinema. Best Picture wow underhand throw me that football yesss!!"
Assistants talking among themselves. "Uh should we tell him it's Room not The Room?" "Nah..." |

I loved Mad Max: Fury Road when I saw it at the theater, but I love it even more after subsequent viewings on Blu-ray.
Mad Max: Fury Road is not the most profound movie ever made, and it's not the most original movie ever made, but it works. It really really works. This film, just like The Road Warrior, is a retelling of John Ford's Stagecoach. I think that John Ford would have loved both of these films, though, and he would have loved the updated dynamics and the broken-down-future aspects of the stories. I think that, more than anything, Mad Max: Fury Road was a reminder of how few films actually work these days, as far as pacing and narrative fervor are concerned. It's a real throwback to the good old days when people simply flocked to the theaters to be told a fun story. |
