YES!

I also just stumbled on that interview and I am truly DYING to see this! I frigg'n LOVE this film and this is one of the very few films that I REALLY want to see on Blu-ray, especially since he is SUPPOSEDLY putting all this new work into it.

Does ANYONE at all have ANY information (rumors, hearsay, whatever!) about this...? PLEASE do comment if you have any thoughts at all on this.

Thanks!

(P.S: this thread is SO huge that if someone(s?) has already discussed this, I would LOVE a repeat if you wouldn't mind... )

But this is completely irrelevant to Criterion. Somewhat Criterion related, as they've been posting about the film quite a bit as of late, I was glad to see Mustang land a nod. It doesn't make up for the lack of The Assassin, but it is a welcome surprise.
McKay winning Best Director would be perfect. I'd love it. Would show how fraudulent the Academy is. Dude makes Kevin Costner look like Scorsese. The Academy would be perfectly hilarious in a world where Kubrick, Hitchcock, Altman, and Lumet never won Best Director, but Adam f**king McKay has one of those under his belt.

Yeah, it isn't your kind of movie. It rocks just the way it is. And that's fine.

McKay is a comedy writer/director. He's rooted in that. And? He knocked it out of the park with The Big Short. Look at McCarthy for Spotlight. Dude directed The Cobbler last time out. The freakin' COBBLER! Seriously?

Don't get your granny undies in a pinch, fellas.

I'm not even 30, so it's not like I'm coming at it as a guy objecting to McKay on some, "Back in my day, it was better" grounds. It's just that "The Big Short" was absolutely putrid, but to each his own.

McCarthy is a far better filmmaker than McKay, that isn't even debatable.

Yeah, but every other film he ever directed were all very good! I watch The Station Agent and Win Win at least once a year.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on Monday, so guessing the announcement will come tomorrow or Tuesday. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

The whole surrounding narratives of the two films are completely different.

The Road Warrior isn't a Western, it's a jidaigeki film. Max is a classic-style ronin, wandering the landscape after "losing" his master (the Main Force Patrol) in the first film.

Now, before anyone throws out that chestnut about samurai films being imitations of Westerns, that's not really true. Kurosawa said that his samurai films were influenced by Ford's Westerns, but that's pretty much where that comparison stops. In many ways, Westerns and jidaigeki fit similar niches in their respective cultures, but neither one is a copy of the other.
I like your point about the ronin, but the action in both The Road Warrior and Mad Max: Fury Road mirrors that in Stagecoach. I'll concede that Fury Road is more of a "retelling" than The Road Warrior, because Fury Road assembles characters from different walks of life for a common goal (Max, Furiosa, Nux, the Vulvani women, etc.) more so than The Road Warrior does, but both films feature that element to an extent. There's a lot of John Ford in both films.

Of course, I'm also of the opinion that about one third of the movies that have been released since Stagecoach have been influenced by Stagecoach.

I think it's funny that he went from directing the worst film of his career to directing the best one.

That's a nice rebound. I didn't care too much about Ant-Man but Big Short managed to make it into my Top-10 of 2015.

MLK Day is the 18th, so tomorrow is realistic.

That The Road Warrior was influenced by Stagecoach I wouldn't argue. But influence doesn't equate to "retelling". According to Scorsese, the climactic fight in Raging Bull was lifted from the boxing match in The Quiet Man, but that doesn't make his film a retelling of Ford's. And Star Wars was influenced heavily by The Hidden Fortress, but it's not in any way a retelling of it.

Eh, it wouldn't be more glaring than some of the nutty decisions they've made in the past.

As much as most of us like to give shit to the Academy, most of their choices for Best Director are pretty accomplished filmmakers. Even in the years when guys like Kubrick, Hitchcock, Altman, Lumet, Fellini, Scorsese, etc. lost out, some pretty damn good filmmakers won. McKay would clearly be the worst director to win that award. Kevin Costner is probably the worst director to win that award, and I actually think "Dances With Wolves" is a pretty good film. It gets piled on because it beat out "Goodfellas", but it's miles better than "The Big Short".

Guys I'm losing my mind (in the best way)...I think Mommie Dearest is coming to the Collection! It's been on my wish list for a while mostly as a joke but it might be really happening.

Yup. Exactly. The Academy is a joke. The greatest directors, actors, and films never win... let alone, even get a nomination.

I watched the much maligned Tiny Furniture last night. I don't get all the vitriol over it. Yes, Dunham's character (really all the characters) is pretty unlikable and it's about rich people in NYC having first world problems, but isn't that what Whit Stillman is all about? Or Baumbach? From a technical and narrative (construction) standpoint I didn't find too much to complain about. She even filmed it in scope. So is all the *****ing really just that people dislike the media personality of Lena Dunham? I have no interest in owning this, or watching it again, but I don't really care that it was released by Criterion.
