Surprise Carol got snubbed and i honestly don't see what the big deal is with the big short. I bet guys like Brad Pitt, etc had something to do with it.

As for Mad Max: FF, to me it feels like a throwback movie with all the practical effects in it, the jarring, heavy metal tone to the movie, really reminded me of movies I watched as a kid in the 90s. With all the money/reboot spent on Marvel/Starwars CGI fest, I guess the academy might be trying to send a message with it's love for Mad Max.

It's Dunham man. Take "Frances Ha" for example. I think it's fine, but I can see why people would hate it. If you replace the radiant Great Gerwig with Lena Dunham then that film gets knocked down multiple notches. While I do agree that Stillman's films are about spoiled New Yorkers, there's always a streak of satire in Stillman's films, looking upon the absurdity of many of the characters. Particularly in "Metropolitan". Dunham doesn't really do satire, but instead wallows in the plight of the character. I disliked "Tiny Furniture", but have to admit if Gerwig, who works in similar territory to Dunham, was playing the main character, I would have much higher tolerance for it. And I'm not even saying this because Dunham is unattractive. Something about her is just really irritating.

McKay would clearly be the worst director to win that award. Kevin Costner is probably the worst director to win that award, and I actually think "Dances With Wolves" is a pretty good film. It gets piled on because it beat out "Goodfellas", but it's miles better than "The Big Short".
Yeah, sure, you can list the renowned filmmakers. But you could also list a slew of not only questionable choices but ridiculous politically motivated winners. McKay doesn't change a thing.

Disagree with Wolves, but we're straying so far from Criterion related discussion that I'll just end it here.

I agree that it doesn't change anything, but I've always found the acting choices far more objectionable than the director choices. I'm not saying "Dances With Wolves" is great, but it's perfectly fine. It's not an actively bad film like "The Big Short". I'll agree to end the discussion here as well, as we're going down a distant road from Criterion.

I think people like to dislike Dunham. Sort of as though it's the cool thing to do. She has said some challenging things, but so have many great artists, and their work has not been maligned as a result.

It's entertaining in a really campy way. Faye Dunaway goes way, way over the top. Definitely not a film I'd associate with Criterion, but monorail's evidence is pretty convincing.

Maybe tomorrow's announcements will include...

Mommie Dearest

Yeah...those other two directors are men. I see a lot of complaints about her that are not specific to anything, and specific conplaints are certainly are in line with what other directors get away with. I see "she just bugs me" or "I just don't like her" very often.

I don't mind that she is in the collection at all, I want to see more films like it getting the criterion signal boost. As for myself, I don't really care for Dunham as a filmmaker yet, what she is saying is not something I'm tuned much into, and I think other voices are doing it better. Plus her bioagraphy is horrific and really turns me right off to her message, but that's my bias.

Does anyone know if the phantom page for Thomas Vinterberg is new? I also see one for Mogens Rukov. They're the director and writer respectively for Festen, aka The Celebration. They also collaborated on It's All About Love (2003)

Also see a phantom for Michel Gondry. Old? New? Either way, it would be awesome if Criteiron got The Science of Sleep. It's the film's 10th anniversary this year, and they've got a deal with Warner now, so it's definitely a possibility. It's very much a Criterion type of title.

"Carnal Knowledge" and "Diva" I could definitely see Criterion releasing. I think "The File on Thelma Jordon" was released by Olive already.

Psyched about The File on Thelma Jordan, mild interest in Carnal Knowledge, Mommy, Dearest really? And, do we really need another release of TGtBatU?

Well, didn't see any of those in the New Year's drawing.

Excited for Diva and Mommy, Dearest if these turn out to be true. My guess this is why John Waters paid a visit to the Criterion offices recently to do an interview for the extras. Diva does get mentioned alot, but I think it's a fabulous film:

I don't know if these are new phantom pages. Probably old ones.
Because they never stop.
I just added one number in the end of the number in the address bar each time, and it goes on and on and on with more names.

King Hu has a page up too! A couple of his films were recently released by Eureka in the UK (Dragon Inn and A Touch of Zen)
