The Ruined Map is in there. Could there be a re-release of the Teshigahara set coming?

Just watched Brief Encounter after not having seen it for years. Good god, I can think of few other films that even come close to depicting unrequited love in such excruciating detail. Johnson and Howard have the kind of chemistry that reminded me of Hawke and Delpy. They're naturals with one another, taking in one another's silence, playfully bouncing off the joy each bring out one another. This is, of course, utilized to devastating effect, with Lean constantly retreating to Laura's thoughts, her feelings, her regrets, and how this seemingly glimpse of happiness can only be a glimpse.

A real lovely film that left me utterly defeated. Initial viewing was pretty much the opposite. Funny how some life experience can enhance a film.

Side note, but it really is clear that Haynes drew influence from this. The structure itself is replicated, and some of the imagery directly mirrors what's here.

Anyone know if there is a restoration going on or done recently of Chaplin's The Circus?

Seeing how much better Criterion edition of The Kid looks, and how bad the UK versions of The Circus I guess they must be waiting for it, also does anybody have any idea how A Woman from Paris and A King in New York look? those never get reviewed

I saw A King in New York on Hulu and it seemed passable. Not 4K variety, but probably good enough for an early Criterion, probably not for now. That said, I wasn't paying close attention to the PQ since it was a Hulu iPad viewing.

Honestly, I think The Big Short was a brilliant film. Maybe if you see it a second time you might like it more. It plays like a satire and though the editing and characters are obnoxious as hell, its a really intelligent movie.

OH YES please. You just named 2 of my most anticipated titles that I'd like to see from Criterion finally. I think The New World is going to be released in '16 for sure.

This year, I've decided to make a concerted effort to narrow down my unwatched pile at a faster clip than what I purchase. So far my results have been an unmitigated disaster, but I can't help myself when I find a good deal (maybe I should have resolved to have a bit more self-control/less impulsiveness when it comes to buying blu-rays, but that's no fun.)

I also have a less-substantial stack of unread books, several of which have movie adaptations that I'm waiting to watch until after I've read the book. One of those movies is Hitchcock's The 39 Steps. There was a copy of John Buchan's novella on my bookshelf for about a year, gathering dust with each day that I made up another reason to not sit down and read. Yesterday evening, I guess I finally ran out of excuses.

I powered through the book in a couple of hours and then decided to watch the film. I was a bit surprised by all of the liberties Hitchcock and the scriptwriters took with the material, but figured that they were ultimately either necessary (there's some antisemitic stuff spouted by a character in the novel, for example, that wouldn't have made it past the censors), inconsequential, but put in to make a character more interesting (changing Scudder the American into Smith, the gorgeous femme fatale with an appealing foreign accent), or written in to fill plot holes
[Show spoiler](giving Hannay a map to work with, instead of him just kind of randomly happening upon The Master's house).

There is also humor throughout both, but the dialogue in the film is outstanding, as are the interactions between Donat and Carroll. It had a very similar mood/feel to The Lady Vanishes. I will definitely be revisiting it in the near future, not only because it was a great film, but also because its brevity makes it a perfect "falling asleep" watch

So it seems after all the Lubezki losses of past years, he may be the first DP to win 3 consecutive years , apparently The Revenant was lit only with natural light, so I guess his recent work with Malick has not been wasted, I imagine they shot hours and hours of footage before completing those last films.

Either that or Roger Deakins gets his first win after 13 nominations

Deakins needs to have some guys take Chivo off to some secluded island for a couple years.

So because it's 15th today, if Criterion decide not to make the announcements today like they often do, does that mean that we will have to wait until Monday (18th) for the April release announcements since they always skip weekends? That sure would suck. Don't do that to us, Criterion!!

If they don't come out today, we may have to wait until Tuesday, actually. Monday is Martin Luther King Day.

Speaking of announcements, it's 5:10AM ET -- WHERE ARE THEY?!

Since I didn't see anybody else answer, I'll do my best. I assume your order was over $50, so it qualified for free standard shipping. If you ordered something coming out in a few weeks, and another film coming out in a few months, they would ship it all at once in a few months, as they won't do two free shipments. If my memory serves me correctly, Barnes & Noble does the same thing. You might confirm that with Jon Mulvaney.

It sounds like you're exactly where I'm at. My buying frequency is at an all-time high, and the number of films I've had coming in greatly exceeds what I have been watching. But, I'm ok with that. This collection is going to be with me the rest of my life. I don't see myself ever replacing the majority of the movies I'm buying now. I'm really happy with 1080P. I mean, how much better PQ do we really need? Sure, some of the movies issued early on in the Blu-ray days could stand to be redone (Patton, Spartacus and others have gotten much needed remasters/reissues, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and some others could really use it). But outside of the films I want to yet add to my collection, I'm going to just enjoy watching my movies at my own pace. Usually, I see between 8-10 films each week. I also read about the history of motion pictures while I watch these films. Right now, I'm enjoying Roger Ebert's Awake in the Dark. Eventually, I plan to write/blog about film, but I want to have a deeper base of knowledge before doing so.

I've not seen Revenant yet (seeing it tonight) but it's hard not to see Lubezki winning. I don't mean this in a way that cheapens his work but his influence is much more 'obvious' than Deakins' (use of long-takes etc) and makes him a stand-out figure to the Academy.

I just placed an order from Barnes & Noble for The American Friend and Bitter Rice for $53.75 total, by using a 20% off coupon for the first film, and by taking advantage of a sale price for the second film.

I read a favorable review of Bitter Rice in the Film Noir of the Week blog that describes it as an effective combination of film noir and Italian neorealism. The American Friend is described as a neo-noir in reviews. This info was good enough for me to pull the trigger after looking at the prices.

I'm cognizant of the missing frames issue during a scene in Bitter Rice, but, after watching the Hulu video in the dedicated thread for the film, I can live with it.
