Last night I watched "A Day In The Country", and for me this is a release that really showcases what I love best about Criterion. On the surface it's just a slightly incomplete 40 min film (albeit from a fairly legendary director), but once you dig into the features and learn the story of its creation, it's journey to actual release, and all that has occurred surrounding the film since release, you see that the actual film is just the tip of the iceberg for the overall story.

I know for some people Criterion is about great films with great PQ/AQ and the suppliments they could take or leave, but for me, getting the film with the overall story of how it came to be, and the effect of the film since release is where it's at.

Really an excellent release.

Not to be a wet blanket, but I would think that even if Criterion has this in the pipeline somewhere, they might be considering new special features that include the perspective of Bowie's passing. If that's the case, organizing and creating all that would probably not include a confirmed release date only 3 months away.

A few nights ago, I watched The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind back to back. It was my first time seeing either of them, and my only real frame of reference was being a fan of Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop.

Overall, I was impressed with this western two-fer. The production was minimal but both films had interesting story hooks. That, plus strong performances, made this a very enjoyable evening. If forced to pick, I slightly preferred The Shooting, probably because of Warren Oates, and because Millie Perkins had a larger role. On paper however, I really enjoyed the story set-up of Ride in the Whirlwind. Jack Nicholson really "popped" in these as well, and the fact that he wrote Whirlwind makes his legend grow even grander in my eyes.
[Show spoiler]The story about travelers being mistaken for wanted men and then hunted by vigilantes
was a cool revisionist slant that I hadn't seen before.

Watched my newly purchased OOP copy of Army of Shadows last night.

Man...what...a...FILM.

Might be better than Le Samourai.

So glad I own this.

I've read the prep time for a release is about 3 months. This is getting interviews, scanning the film, etc. This presumes all the materials are in good shape and those being interviewed can get to NYC. Something like Apu obviously takes longer.

So, it's already confirmed that CC is waiting until Wednesday of next week to announce April's releases. Oh well.

Congratulations. I've only seen the trailer for Army of Shadows, but it looks great. I'll definitely pick it up if I ever go region-free. Still not willing to pay eBay prices for the Criterion, however.

By the way, there's a guy on eBay asking $300 for five brand new copies. I hope he gets boils.

Cheers, Ray. Well done. It's no Top Gun, but an amazing film. Easily my favorite Melville.

Saw it on their Myspace account that they're not announcing any titles this month.

It might lack the thematic substance of Top Gun or Point Break, but man does it look great.

...Melville really knows how to shoot a picture.

I was able to get my copy in exchange for two Criterion films I didn't even want, plus $10.

There are deals out there.

...just be patient.
