Default Barcelona

Sorry for the CAPS but I can not tell you how awesome this feels to me,

Barcelona is easily one of my favorite films. It is, beyond a doubt, the best Whit Stillman film. Without giving anything away, it is a cold-war comedy of the highest echelon. It is a beautifully innocent film that provides a perfect time capsule of that era. BRAVO CRITERION!!!

It's a great set. The films range from solidly good to great and not only are the supplements really interesting, they form a really complete package. They really complement the films very well.

Disinterest is easy to understand. Extreme, violent disinterest seems oxymoronic. Or just plain moronic, maybe.

This sounds like a great month of announcements to me! I plan on watching Phoenix on Netflix soon to learn more about it, but all the others seem like eventual purchases.

Nice to see Brief Encounter set a solo release. It is a beautiful film. I hope they release a solo edition of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, I'd like to get it for a couple of my friends.

Another solid month from Criterion.

I'm really grateful for what Criterion does and this is all good stuff. But I'd be lying if I wasn't looking for that McCabe & Mrs Miller disc sooner rather than later since reading about it!

I was really hoping for an announcement of Lone Wolf and Cub thus month. Or possibly Hanzo The Razor trilogy. Lady Snowblood seems to be a hit with everyone and it's a great set. So hopefully these come sooner than later.

I wouldn't expect Lone Wolf until around November. That's when their bigger sets tend to get released.

Diva is long overdue for a Blu-ray release. If Criterion were to release it, I'd be a very happy camper. It sure would fit their catalogue nicely.

Awesome month of releases. Angels, Phoenix, and Kennedy Films, can't wait for these!

Or July. I'd be thrilled with Lone Wolf for one of the months and either Dekalog, Road Trilogy, or Before Trilogy this year.

April is a meh month, especially compared with the first 3. Didn't think Phoenix was a praised movie. Trailer I saw back in the summer gave me the impression it was a run of mill holocaust film, but I guess I should check it out.

Sadly, it looks like they will be milking the hype just like with Mulholland Drive and release it whatever month Mulholland Drive was released, which was late in the year. My guess.

Most interested in Only Angels Have Wings. I was satisfied with the DVD but the extras are tempting. I enjoyed the Stillmans when they came out but I'm not sure I need to own them; however, if I were to buy one, it would be Barcelona. I own the Lean, so no interest there. The Kennedy films look very interesting but I'll probably wait for them to show up on Hulu. As for Phoenix, I sometimes think it takes 30 years to judge whether a movie is Criterion-worthy.

All in all, a good month. Something I want, but not too many somethings

Now I'm hoping they do a Stillman with Polanski's trilogy and release The Tennant.

Hmm. Just logged in (actually, thought I already was logged in, but whatever) and didn't have any trouble.

Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't, I guess. I haven't been able to log into YouTube for over a week now.

Wow, I'm quite surprised about the Whit Stillman box set... I have The Last Days of Disco and Metropolitan on blu already so I'll probably just go for Barcelona (which I've not yet seen, but trust this will be a fun watch).

I'm also down for Brief Encounter too.

Oddly enough I never was big into Howard Hawkes, and I recently watched Phoenix and didn't feel it was a movie I could revisit more than once, so I'll be skipping those titles.

The Kennedy Films is a hard sell for me, so I doubt I even have remote interest in even watching those.

Overall, this month doesn't blow me away, but its still yet another good roundup of diverse movies from Criterion.

Anybody know if Criterion ever released a standard size cover for Curious Case of Benjamin Button?

I have all my Criterion's lined up together, and it sticks out like a sore thumb with the thinner blue case, and shorter cover art. I can get a standard Criterion case easily enough, but the cover will still look out of place.

Pedantic, I know. But I thought I'd ask.

Not to my knowledge. And I know what you mean. It's odd.

OTOH, in my present (non-)organizational scheme a few directors are grouped together, Criterion or not. So that film is with my other Finchers. And they are all pretty different from one and other anyways. So, crisis avoided!
