The B&N sale is over - I went back for another bite today. I had cancelled the Antoine Doinel set from a bulk order a little earlier today, as it was out of stock and delaying the order, so I thought I'd reorder it separately. In the space of under an hour, I went back to reorder it and it had gone from $49.95 to $75! Bummer!

Figured that August 2nd expiration might be bogus... (Just like my August 1st coupon expired on August 1st, but at 2:59 AM Eastern Time). Looks like the party's over.

I was told by a cashier at my local B&N that the sale would run until they closed Monday evening. Guess I'll swing by tomorrow and find out for sure.

Good ol' Thomas Mitchell. Look at his 1939 credits:

# The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) .... Clopin
# Gone with the Wind (1939) .... Gerald O'Hara
# Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) .... Diz Moore
... aka "Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" - USA (complete title)
# Only Angels Have Wings (1939) .... Kid Dabb
... aka "Howard Hawks' Only Angels Have Wings" - USA (complete title)
# Stagecoach (1939) .... Doc Boone

Coincidentally, he played drunks in most of these great films

I seem to fall asleep watching Antonio Gaudi at least twice a week. I wish that was in HD, but that would be a specialty title for sure.

you'll love "Ace"
Wilder has always been one of my favorite directors.
the number of amazing films he directed is ridiculous
it's such a shame we probably won't ever get too many of his films on blu.
It's a crime "Some Like It Hot" and "Sunset Boulevard" aren't out on blu already.
the major studios have been such a let down as far as films like this.

I second that. Ace in the Hole is my favorite Wilder drama. Although it's second overall to the great Some Like it Hot which inspired my username.

Would love to see Criterion issue Five Graves to Cairo and Fedora. Both films I've yet to find anywhere on video.

Chungking Express is the only Criterion I've bought and didn't absolutely love. I'll probably never watch it again.

My "Secret of The Grain" that I ordered from B&N got sent to NJ, then AZ, and missed me completely (I'm in Oh-So-Hi-Oh) I've never had UPS tracking info listed as "UPS Sorting Error" before..... It's going to miss the original shipping estimate by 8 days..... and this was the single title that held up my entire order to begin with......

I would say "I should stick to Amazon" but this wasn't B&N's fault

Good news (off topic) I got my Neil Young set

I burned through a good hunk of projector bulb last night by falling asleep to "Vivre Se Vie" Started it at 2:30 AM, and woke up at 7:00 or so when my daughter woke up

Fedora was awful. Count yourself lucky.

(Though I recall reading a rumor...)

Are transfers for Criterion and Masters of Cinema Blu-rays the same? I already have M and For All Men Kind on Masters of Cinema and wondering if Criterion is any different.

No, they're usually different.

MOC usually has a hands-off approach to the transers they receive from the studios... meaning they usually don't change anything.

Criterion, however, has almost always tampered (i.e. constrast boosting) with the transfers to achieve a result they're happy with for the final product. And, obviously, the better transfers are director-approved.

Criterion's blu-ray release for "M" is quite a bit darker than the MOC disc, and some of the clothing texture details are lost in the process. Some people are Criterion wh*res, though, and stick by Criterion's decision to manipulate the video for the finished product. I, myself, prefer the lighter MOC release of "M".

I loved Chungking Express. It has a Tarantino vibe to it....like if he tried to direct a romantic comedy.

But I gotta warn ya...you might hate "California Dreamin" by The Mamas & The Papas for a while afterward.

One of my favorite songs. Still.

And yeah, decent Wong Kar-Wai flick. Please buy it so Criterion will be motivated to turn In The Mood For Love into blu sooner rather than later/never.
