The titles in the set are not feel-good movies; they are grim social dramas nuanced with commentary about the lives and roles of women in Japanese society during the time Mizoguchi made them (including a daring pair of pre-WWII films when Japan was under the death grip of militarism and empire building). It also contains two of the best films Criterion has ever released: Women of the Night and Street of Shame.

Street of Shame was Mizoguchi's final film; in my opinion it is an unforgettable masterpiece, richly layered and honest in its look into the lives of a handful of Japanese prostitutes.

I hope you enjoy this set as much as I did. Discovering Mizoguchi has been a key signpost along my journey into the wonders of Japanese cinema.
More good information from the oildude! Thanks for the post. Now, I'm really excited about digging into this set.

Dragon Inn
King's of the Road
Alice in the Cities
The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick (maybe budget release? or supplement)
Late Autumn (first ever release originally on eclipse set?)
Night on Earth

There is also several others listing only DCP, like Wrong Move and A Touch of Zen, but also some stuff like from Demy and Varda that ended only on DVD or hulu.
Well, that title certainly fits the clue in the Wacky New Years cartoon! Good sleuthing!

Does B&N have better packaging? I don't recall getting any damaged items from them, but I have never ordered anything in Digibook. Maybe Seven Samurai.
DigiBooks from Amazon are a total crap shoot. I bought A Streetcar Named Desire from them, and it was damaged. So were the next two replacements. I finally just returned all three, got a refund, and bought it off of somebody n EBay. The On The Waterfront DigiBook I bought was just trashed. Luckily, Jon Mulvaney sent me replacements of the slip, the inside tray and the book for free. I also replaced my Sweet Smell of Success slip and digibook for $10. I'm a real stickler when it comes to packaging.

In response to your query about B&N, I've never gotten a DigiBook in less than pristine condition, that includes Breathless, Mulholland Dr., Ikiru and Ace in the Hole, as well as The BBS Story boxed set.

Default Breaking the Waves

Sorry if I'm posting in the middle of a discussion, but I just finished watching Breaking The Waves. I'm not sure what else to say but WOW!

This was a blind buy for me. I wasn't expecting the kind of wallop I got. There were many parts of the film, that in a very roundabout way, I could relate to, through beliefs and happenings which have crossed paths with me in my own lifetime. This film tore me apart. Powerful!

I'm anxious to dig into the supplements, but maybe not right away. I have some digesting to do first.

That is the thing, I sat there and I only saw like 5-6 2015 films. I tend to play catchup with the films of the pier year since my primary way of watching new films is by home viewing and I only go to the theater for films I really want to watch (and even then, I don't get to some of them).

Absolutely, all the films are wonderful. It's my favorite Eclipse I own. Many of Ozu's films have overlapping themes, and some are straight-up remakes/retellings of his past work. These are all enjoyable and endearing films, and their worth watching.

Shell, I browsed your poll questions and I honestly don't think I purchased enough to complete most of your questions.

I'll more than likely peek at the questions again and see if there is anything I could vote for or partially answer (i.e. one choice vs. three).

I definitely do not regret blind buying Inside Llewyn Davis. Fantastic film and the extras the Criterion put on it are also just as fantastic.

Ikiru is not a digipack as far as I know...Last November sale they sent I order Persona online from B&N and they actually sent it by UPS, all other non digibooks were sent by USPS, so somebody did some thinking...

Criterion Movies I watched this week

Day for Night (4.5/5)
Shadows from Cassavetes set (4/5)
Sansho the Bailiff (3.5/5)
Days of Heaven (5/5)
Medium Cool (4/5) ...did not connect that well with the theme, but wonderful camera work (final sequences were wonderful) by late Haskell Wexler, who also did uncredited work in Days of Heaven (everybody knows...I know, just pointing that I watched those as a tribute to late Mr. Wexler)

Days of Heaven is the only I have watched before...

You're right, I mixed up my Kurosawa films. The Seven Samurai was the DigiPack I got in, not Ikiru. Though that one I got from Amazon, and it was actually in great shape.

And the Criterion movies with the special cases are DigiPacks, not DigiBooks. Oy, there are too many packaging types now to keep track of.

I've been tempted by this set too, but am holding out a bit for some blu releases of them. However, I feel as though I may have to wait too long. Has is the picture quality?

Default About The Revenant

[Show spoiler] The theater was packed to the rafters and pretty much was sold out! My friend Marc and I managed to get there 15 min. early and found 2 great seats in the 2nd row on the stadium seats on the left. This film was an intense experience! Like many people have already said, some of the flashback scenes and survival sequences might have been over the top, but personally I thought the bear attack scene was one of the most realistic animal attack scenes I've ever seen in film (in terms of CGI).

My friend called it "Jeremiah Johnson vers. 2.0" (or even 3.0 for that matter). I thought of the more recent movie The Grey, especially when Liam Neeson's character jumps off a cliff and lands on pine trees to "cushion" his fall (an instance that happens in this film too). In The Revenant, Leo DeCaprio was pretty much Jeremiah Johnson on steroids in terms of surviving everything he went through. Obviously, Tom Hardy's character was outrageous and as bad as fur traders come. I actually thought often of Terrence Malick in those flashback/dream sequences. I also thought of Costner's Dances with Wolves as well, with the Native American element and ties to a woman the main character had. I enjoyed the artistic backstory on Hugh Glass (DeCaprio) too, and appreciated the fact that this was based on a true story.

The real winner is the Cinematography though. Emmanuel Lubezki has often been superlative in his work with Innaritu, but if he doesn't win an Oscar for his work in this movie, it would be a tragedy of immense proportions. Some of these scenes in the film, from the opening "water forest" landscape to many others in terms of lighting and scenery, were outstanding. It's no "wonder" (no pun intended) that Lubezki has always been Terrence Malick's Director of Photography as well (since 2005's The New World). I was reminded of some scenes in The New World as well while watching The Revenant, in addition to the 1991 Beresford movie Black Robe, which is, in terms of sheer Production Design and Cinematography, underwhelming, compared to The Revenant. The score by Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) was remarkable also, adding a minimalist and sweeping tone to the film, and never being invasive or overpowering. I loved the use of synthesizers for many of the film's scenes.

As a survival story, I thought this film was as good as it gets. However, the third act of predictable revenge is where it fell. It became a bit too obvious about how this story was going to end, and though I was expecting all of this frontier violence and gore, it was incredibly graphic and I sometimes found myself looking away from the screen for a few moments. But man, what a movie! I don't think DeCaprio's character of Hugh Glass is well-rounded enough or shows his character with enough depth, for DeCaprio to win an Oscar for Best Actor, but he surely deserves a nomination, which he most likely will receive. Mr. Glass was simply unbreakable!
Finally catched this as it was just released here, and almost agree with everything you wrote.

The movie was great especially the first 2 acts, score was great, cinematography was great, bear scene was awesome, it reminded me of Grizzly Man even though there is no graphic violence there I picture that crucial moment had to be something as hard to watch as this.

I basically have the same problems with the third act, I think some parts near the end seem specifically constructed to extend the action scenes as opposed to the beginning where it all flows more naturally.

Also agree with most that the flashbacks are not done gracefully in my opinion, I think it shows that just having a great cinematographer is not enough, some of them felt forcing the film to be more artsy but I just didn't think they work that well, maybe because the thematic in the end is pretty simple, it is a survival movie.

While I liked the cinematography and some of the shots reminded me to The New World and The Tree of Life, I think in a lot of parts the shots were much more traditional in style, I couldn't stop thinking about Marketa Lazarova in several parts, and thought that if the film dared to really push a more artistic approach like that, it could have been much better, and sorry but as great as Chivo is, I still prefer that black and white cinematography of Marketa.

Apparently only two of them have recent restorations that look pretty good, but those are japanese releases.

I posted earlier that according to the Janus page, Late Autumn might get a criterion release on blu, the other one Equinox Flower shows as having a DCP, so they probably have those new prints.

BTW you can remove both The Kid and The Bicycle Thief from your signature

Hmm. The Japanese import I got of Late Autumn is just beautiful. Not sure that there needs to be a Criterion version when there's already such a good one.

Pedantic note: Criterion does not release DigiBooks. The titles you mention are DigiPacks. Completely different animals. DigiPacks are cardboard packages of varying styles. DigiBooks are packages in the style of a hardcover book, with the book or booklet actually bound in.

Here's an example of a DigiBook.

Fair enough. I was just thinking that they might release something that's not already so wonderully done. Like, you know, an upgrade of The Passion of Joan of Arc -- yes, I am going there again. I will never give up on that.

Criterion is a US-based label. What gets released in other countries is irrelevant. Not everyone has a region-free player, or imports releases from even other Region A countries.
