oh, i don't know who named the jpg, but it says "lonely plates".

Someone at the Criterion forum suggested "In a lonely place", but would they draw "plates" for "place"?
I think In a Lonely Place may be it, which would be awesome!

I was thinking that the image may be coins and it could be John Ford's They Were Expendable

Yeah, In a Lonely Place would be great news. It's long overdue.

Sure! If you remember the clues for both The Thin Red Line and The Thin Blue Line, in each case the word "line" was represented in the clue with a lion.

I would agree with pedromvu's guess. A large basis of what goes into selecting a film for the catalog is the availability of suitable materials. For Chinese / Hong Kong films the situation can get very frustrating. The thing is most of these films were never made with the intent that they would be seen several decades after their initial release. Unlike places that saw film as an art-form worth preserving, either by government institutes or the studios themselves, good source materials for HD presentations of these films may be hard to come by. Sometimes it is hard to determine who holds the rights and enter into negotiations with them. Film elements may not be available or the holders are not willing to share them (outright refusal or charging so high it becomes unviable). For example, the rights holders of the Bruce Lee films are known to be very hard to deal with, handing out substandard masters with a "take it or leave it" attitude.

Indian films also came very late into the Criterion fold for the same reason. The initial batch of Satyajit Ray films came from restorations funded by the original rights-holders (RD Bansal). Criterion then executed the restoration of the Apu trilogy. Hopefully more Indian films by other directors too will enter this or other high standard labels.

But what does "Book Now" mean (launches Gmail)? Part of the testing? Am I missing the obvious?

When I saw the hint on my email this morning, I immediately thought of In a Lonely Place.

Of course, that might simply be due to the fact that In a Lonely Place has been my most requested Criterion title for quite some time now.

If this comes to fruition, then I'm probably not out of line in saying that I've already chosen my favorite Blu-ray release of 2016.

well, some Yimou films have been released in Asia (or Europe) and they look great. I'm refering mainly to the early 90s films.
If criterion could release those...

Yes they would, the clues are often "punny" in nature. I also think it's In A Lonely Place.

In the link above, I believe Janus films states that they have it on Blu-ray?
Janus sends out DCPs and blu-rays to art houses for screenings. When Hiroshima toured many saw it on Janus blu-ray.

A Criterion blu-ray is a slam dunk.

Firstly, as a web designer myself, I approve of the new look! Far too many sites today overdo it, not leaving enough white space, which is so important to a pleasing aesthetic. Web design, happily, has advanced in what is technically possible now with HTML 5 and CSS 2 (and I love the coups de grāce of Flash. Finally!!) But, too many developers are ignoring the principles of design that any first year art student should be well versed in. I suspect that's due in large part to client's unwillingness to keep an open mind. I only spent a year and a half as an advertising art major before switching to political science as my field of study (and I'm completely self-taught as a web dev), but the elements of design were forever hammered into my subconscious, and whenever I see "busy" sites that assault the senses, complete with a litany of plugins slowing the loading time to a crawl, I cringe.

Sadly, this also reminds me that I need to get off my arse, and complete my own site. Jesus, as if I don't have enough to do with all these movies awaiting perusing.

Reddington, the "book now" button, I would assume, is for contacting Janus to do a showing of the film. They mention that Chimes at Midnight has not been viewed stateside for decades. Pure guess here, but could this be similar to when StudioCanal had a limited number of showings before making the 4k scan of The Third Man available for purchase?? If so, I hope somebody makes this a reality in the Dallas area. I'd love to see this.

The plates do equal place, but the place is only there to signal you to The Place Beyond the Pines. And what are pines? Trees of course! And why would they be lonely you ask? Well because like everything else, you're born alone and you die alone. That's Life.

What's that? Tree? Life? Clearly this is for The Tree of Life.
