However, I had tried to buy the set a few weeks ago on criterion.com and it was not available at that moment. I'm trying to recall if it had certain verbiage for why it wasn't available, but I can't remember now. It directly made me start watching a few eBay items and paying attention to the trends.

So when I noticed it was then for sale again at criterion.com, I thought I'd mention it here. HD Goofnut and those OOP threads are usually pretty accurate... I wonder where they got that info.
I thought I was missing out not knowing about forums at Criterion.com.

It will be curious what happens with Zatoichi. Criterion has been pretty consistent keeping things in print that they have the rights for, but have also been consistent with re-releasing stuff in non dual editions when they run out. I wonder what a blu only Zatoichi set would look like?

1. BIRTH (2004) - New Line DVD
2. BLOODY SUNDAY (2002) - Paramount DVD
3. THE VIRGIN SUICIDES (1999) - Paramount DVD
4. SECRETS & LIES (1996) - 20th Century Fox DVD [they've already released 3 Mike Leigh films from the 90s, might as well do this too]
5. BARTON FINK (1991) - 20th Century Fox DVD
I would love for Criterion to get their hands on this. Now that they have released one Coen Brothers title, I have my hopes up that they'll release this one. The bottom line is that I want to be "shown the life of the mind" in high definition.

In a desperate attempt to redeem myself and worm my way back into your good graces, I drove to Wal-Mart last night and purchased Top Gun. I had actually gone to pick up some accessories for my new iPhone, and could see the blu-ray dump-bin from where I was shopping for Otterbox Defender cases. Top Gun was on the top of the pile, and I took that to be a sign from the Universe and Ray Jackson that I was supposed to own it and to experience it.

Tonight, I actually plan to make a big batch of popcorn in my Stir-Crazy, pop open a Coke Zero, and watch it. Soon I will know first-hand exactly what audiences have been obsessing over for the past three decades. Tonight, I will become an even manlier manly man.

Watched THE GREAT BEAUTY a few days ago and really loved it.
It such a marvelous film that has everything that counts.
There is some magnificent shot design. The acting is top notch, and the characters are very 3 dimensional. It really touched me, and it's still on my mind.

The Criterion transfer is pretty solid, aside from some banding.
The sound is excellent.

Highly recommended.

I wish I could remember. It was months ago and it was a slower, artsy film, but I forget which specifically. That describes a lot of Criterion films.

I would say definitely if you already like Ray. This is an upper class story, unlike Apu, but has similar style and pacing. Somewhat naturalistic.

-Day for Night

This is pretty safe. One of Truffaut's finest in my opinion.

-Kiss Me Deadly

I adore this film, but it's divisive. Some people that I respect, including noir scholars and buffs, hate it. I wouldn't recommend a blind buy.

-Lady Snowblood

A blast. If you like revenge or gory samurai films, then grab this one, although the second is not as good as the first.

-Revanche

I'd say this is the second safest. A very well told story. It has some tension and a little action, very character oriented. Plus it has boobs if that sways you.

Huh. I can't think of anything except a dump bin when I see that abhorrent avatar. It makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit every time I look at it.

The Great Beauty is one of my favorite Criterions. I got to see Youth in the theatre this week too, and while not as good as TGB, i still liked it a lot. Not coming to Criterion, but i'll still pick up it's upcomign blu release.

I have no idea what "banding" is, and i'm happy that i'm not super picky about picture quality stuff. I never notice 99% of the stuff that people have issues with in terms of picture quality. I'm not usually an "ignorance is bliss" kinda guy, but in this instance it works well.

So I watched The Master last night.

This film is so freaking brilliant.

This might very well be my favorite PTA film and one of the best films of the last 20 years imo.

Joachim Phoenix's performance is simply remarkable.

Genuinely one of the best acting performances I've ever seen.

...that's some De Niro-in-his-prime level stuff right there.

If I could vote for one PTA film to be released by Criterion, I think it would be The Master.

It's funny how people can view a film so differently. The Master, at least right now, is probably my least favorite film by PTA. Maybe it's one of those films where I need to go back and rewatch it with a different frame of mind. Considering how much I love PTA's other films, and how big a fan I am of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Laura Dern, I'm betting a second go round will change my mind.

Right now, I'd put PTA's films in this order:

1. Boogie Nights
2. Magnolia
3. There Will Be Blood
4. The Master

It's February 1st tomorrow, lol. July is a ways off. Instead of making these blind buys, watch them ahead of time. Charulata and Revanche are available on Hulu, and Lady Snowblood is available for rental on iTunes.

Revanche is one of the next films I'm planning on watching, as I'm interested in buying it, but I want to watch it first. Day For Night, I would think, is a safe blind buy.

By the way, gang, this:

...is already OOP after being released in January 2014? Can can anybody confirm Thief is OOP? It isn't listed that way on Criterion's website.

It is still around the $20 range on Amazon so it definitely isn't OOP, yet.

"July is a ways off. Instead of making these blind buys, watch them ahead of time."

That will NEVER happen.

That's like saying why don't you put your life's savings in a safe, interest-bearing account instead of going to Vegas to gamble it away on Craps and hookers.

...do you know nothing about me?

I'm at the point where I can't keep up with Criterion releases. I must have a dozen titles on my wish list and another half dozen in my to-watch pile.

Despite this I pop in Thunderball yesterday. Too many choices sometimes!

Ray - did you report back on Pale Flower yet? Did I maybe just miss your post?

I think I have a perfect record recommending blind buys to you, although I tried to talk you out of Hiroshima and was shocked you loved Ali, so maybe not.
