They are probably getting rid of the dual format and releasing Blu-Ray and DVD separately. Those dual format releases are looking even more special in hindsight.

No need to wait until July when the flash sale is around the corner, well maybe it is in March like last year but still.

That will NEVER happen.

That's like saying why don't you put your life's savings in a safe, interest-bearing account instead of going to Vegas to gamble it away on Craps and hookers.

...do you know nothing about me?
I am learning.

I think there is some real genius in your approach to life. Gamble it away on craps and hookers, hey, at least you had a great time. Put it into an interest-bearing account like a money market, and watch your funds get frozen, and your NAV plummet when one of the "too big to fail" financial monsters declares bankruptcy. At least with the trip to Vegas, you're in charge the whole way.

I still have nightmares about coming into work, and being told that Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy, back in 2008. The Reserve's money market broke the buck, and all hell broke loose.

Especially when the dual format editions come as a DigiPack. I had a beast of a time finding Tokyo Story before Christmas. I much prefer that packaging, if it's available, so I think I already know what I'm buying with the next flash sale.

I think I have a perfect record recommending blind buys to you, although I tried to talk you out of Hiroshima and was shocked you loved Ali, so maybe not.
I liked Pale Flower a lot.

Though I can't say I was blown away by it like Hiroshima Mon Amour, Picnic At Hanging Rock, the Apu Trilogy, Fassbinder films or some of my other favorite Criterion blind buys.

It's one that I'm definitely keeping...but not good enough to make the starting line-up of the Ray Jackson Criterion blind buying all star game.

You will never be the same J.

From this day forward your life will be defined by the end of one era and the beginning of another.

...and you can never go back.

Yes, now whenever you watch a poor action flick, you can at least say...

Well it was better than Top Gun

I check this thread every few days and all I see are Top Gun circle jerks. Which I guess makes sense, as one of the most homoerotic films of all time.

You're just secretly awaiting news of a Criterion release of Top Gun, aren't you? It's perfectly okay to admit it.

I would be ok if that movie stayed in the (criterion) closet.

The Graduate Blu-ray REVIEW

This is clearly the best release on the market.

Density and fluidity are dramatically improved, so if you are viewing on larger screens you will see quite a difference. I do think that a couple of sequences look a tad too dark -- including that pool sequence -- but the rest of the film looks lovely.

Colors: I feel that color saturation is perhaps a bit too strong and as a result a few small nuances are missing, but the overall balance is still very good.

I think that you will like the presentation a lot

Pro-B

I hate to do this to you, Ray, but I was perusing your collection to see if I might be able to suggest a blind buy for your July purchases, and I noticed a glaring omission.

Care to enlighten us as to why there is no Top Gun?

Your dubious collection editing tactics can't pervert my pursuit of the truth!

Although if Dr. Gonzo is willing to share, I might be dissuaded from continuing the aforementioned inquiry.

What's up with the recurring references to Top Gun in this thread? Are they supposed to be sarcastic? I can't tell.

Likes Criterion AND Top Gun? Well, volleyball-based movies are severely underrepresented on the Criterion Collection, so I guess he can't be blamed for liking a subject that Criterion is yet to prioritize.
