As much as I cannot watch animals be hurt -- I mean, I can't even watch those Kayley Cuoco Humane Society Commercials. I honestly can't. I leave the house and have a cigarette every time they come on. I can't watch ASPCA commercials either.

But I would be a hypocrite when it comes right down to it. I eat meat. I've seen Apocalypse Now how many times at this point? I'd rather never have to kill an animal myself. That's the truth. But if I just say, "Oh, an animal is killed in this movie, I'm not watching it," then I'm a hypocrite.

Now, torture? That's something else. I simply can't watch an animal being tortured. Oddly enough, I'm more than likely to be able to watch a HUMAN BEING be tortured. I hate that too. But I simply cannot watch some poor animal be tortured.

OK, now I'm depressed.

A list of animal cruelty TV & movies:

http://www.avclub.com/article/yes-an...v-shows--72051

The only Criterion titles are: Andrei Rublev, Heaven's Gate, Stagecoach, Weekend and Rules of the Game.

Au hasard Balthazar has been released in the UK, hasn't it? Balthazar did appear to be treated cruelly.

Yes, but I'm pretty sure people here are referring to "non-human animals."

Look, as I said above, people being tortured in films can be very difficult to watch. But they almost always have a choice (unless we're talking about Holocaust documentaries, or something). The actors and actresses who starred in, for instance, Martyrs chose to do so. Yes, it's twisted and much of the stuff that goes on is difficult to watch. But these are rational human beings who made a choice: To act in this film, and undergo these sorts of horrible situations on camera.

A kangaroo being shot or a water buffalo being butchered isn't making a choice. That's the difference.

And, also as I said, I would be a hypocrite if I said I won't watch Apocalypse Now again or Andrei Rublev. It would simply be hypocritical. But that doesn't mean that I need to be able to accept it. Sometimes, maybe a horse being killed makes me cry more than watching a human being tortured (in a film, that is). That horse doesn't have a choice.

When it comes down to it, I'm not a good person. But I've come to that conclusion a long time ago.

Seems to me like there should be more, but I'm not sure. Strange that they didn't mention Dry Summer if they killed a real dog for it.

Surprised that nobody freaks out over Touki Bouki, a film I remember having a lot of animals getting cut up with blood everywhere. Not sure if that was all staged or not - it looked grisly and real to me. If I remember right, this type of stuff was what inspired the animal sacrifices in The Last Temptation of Christ - I'm sure those are staged.

I still wasn't clear if the bullfighting scenes (including the stabbing/spearing of the bulls) in Moment of Truth were real or staged.

Chicken killing in Marketa Lazarova could have been easily staged.

Whether real or not, they're all pretty hard watches.

What do you mean about Martyrs? I don't think actors have been tortured in real life to show it on camera , that is the difference when you watch a Movie you know the actors are working and they fake it as most convincingly as possible, but if they hurt or kill animals that is real.

I think a great movie that in some part deals with what you mention of being a hypocrite because you still eat meat is The Misfits, it's hard not to side with the character of Marilyn in the end, but at the same time you see there is something about her thinking that doesn't make much sense in the world we live today.

BTW today I watched Death by Hanging not sure if anyone saw this on hulu.

It is such a crazy movie, while it deals with serious issues there are parts that had me laughing out loud of how far the situation goes and there are some nice surrealist touches.

It is good but I think I might have missed some points for not knowing much about 60's Japanese culture and political situation.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Super Troopers.

Talk about animal cruelty.

...what they did to that poor bear was inhuman.

No, I what I meant about Martyrs is that they are "acting" as being tortured. They scream and move horribly and fluctuate ... they are in a terrible situation, but's it's "made up." It may be a physically terrible situation, but it's "fake."

Some horrible animal is ACTUALLY being butchered. That animal doesn't have a choice. He or she can't say, "I'm interested in this role." That's what bothers me.

Still haven't seen that one all the way through. But it does remind me of how repulsive the scene in Me, Myself, and Irene is with the chicken. Not even sure if the chicken or the human got the worst of it.

I haven't thought of that movie in a LONG time. Now you've made me want to pull out my DVD & watch it.

After checking Gilda, it was certainly a disappointment for me, I don't really see the appeal other than Rita Hayworth (which is enough to still give this a positive rating).

I kept thinking on the similarities with Casablanca which is one of my all time favorites, found the following site with all the comparisons:

http://movies.dhwritings.com/Gilda.html

I think the end
[Show spoiler]wrapped all too nicely for the main characters, I don't think the romance was there to warrant such a finale considering what happened before.

I thought it was fair to middling the first time I watched it too. But it really grew on me the second (or maybe third, I don't remember for sure) time around. I didn't think Glenn Ford was at all right for the part the first time but I now think that him not being right for the part is one of the things that makes him perfect for the part. It kind of reminds me of Dick Powell's turn as Marlowe in Murder, My Sweet. Once I stopped worrying about it not being what I expected it to be I found that it was quite good.

And Gilda has a lot more going for it that Rita Hayworth (or even Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford). It looks gorgeous (and that was just the DVD), it's very atmospheric and George Macready is at his most George Macreadyish.

Yep, all of those films have been, tho some with major cuts. Marketa Lazarova is cut pretty badly in the uk due to animal cruelty too.

Sorry, I was under the impression (based on your comments actually!) that it was much worse. I thought that was why there was little chance of Second Run upgrading it to Blu-ray here.
