Au hasard Balthazar has been released in the UK, hasn't it? Balthazar did appear to be treated cruelly.
No blu release yet on this title. Been one of my Amazon pre-orders now for about 3.25 years (seriously, 3.25 years), I'm not one to give up hope easily

Looks like Arrow is releasing The Human Condition on blu in the UK. Hopefully a Criterion upgrade is around the corner?

I guess Walkabout is another criterion that has animal cruelty too? In fact its been a while since I watched it but I remember there were some scenes that made a big impression on me (I saw it when i was 15). Ok, maybe cant be considered "cruelty" since he was doing it in order to survive, but still it kept me from watching it again.

I would have to turn in my man card in Kentucky if I had a problem with butchering animals (for sport). Walkabout was graphic, but it was done within the story for survival.
The one that bothered me was Godard's Weekend. It was basically done to show chaos and seemed completely unnecessary to me.

It is good but I think I might have missed some points for not knowing much about 60's Japanese culture and political situation.
I think just being familiar with Japanese discrimination against Koreans should be enough to get a pretty good idea of where the film is going. Oshima made a lot of films condemning the Japanese for their treatment of Koreans.

Also it is always the day after the site is down for maintenance for a few hours.

And always at 12pm EST, so it is worth a check just in case

The Naked Prey's depiction of elephant poaching is extremely distressing.

I surely hope so! I may end up importing, if Criterion doesn't announce it before the Arrow release date.

My best guess would be 3/1 or 3/8 though they don't seem beholden to any special date or spacing.
I am thinking they will want to wait until The Graduate is released before the flash sale this year, just for the massive sales.

I'm assuming preorder items aren't eligible for half price sales right?

I'd like to pick up Phoenix.

The only Criterion titles are: Andrei Rublev, Heaven's Gate, Stagecoach, Weekend and Rules of the Game.

Au hasard Balthazar has been released in the UK, hasn't it? Balthazar did appear to be treated cruelly.

I finally remembered the film in the Criterion Collection that I had to turn off without seeing it through to the end. It was the documentary short, Blood of the Beasts (1949), by Georges Franju, and it's one of the supplements on the Eyes Without a Face disc. I had heard it was disturbing, but I thought, "I can handle this. It wouldn't have been included on the disc unless it had some merit."

Well, meritorious or not, I just couldn't stomach it. It was filmed at a slaughterhouse in Paris, and about one or two minutes into the film, a man walked up to a horse to drive an implement into its head, and I had a visceral reaction that made my whole body weak. I've had a lot of experience with death and dying, via hospice work and veterinary euthanasia, but I can't handle murder, killing, torture or wholesale slaughter. And I don't apologize to anyone for knowing my own limits.

I cannot believe that I forgot Blood of the Beasts during this animal cruelty discussion.

I did watch Blood of the Beasts in its entirety, because I tend to treat everything as an endurance test, and because of my immense respect for Georges Franju. Several moments from the movie are oddly beautiful, and I love the rather idyllic shots of that section of Paris. Unfortunately, the brutality of the animal slaughter scenes makes this a film that I will likely never sit through again.

I feel the same way about Billy Wilder's 1945 film, Death Mills, which shows the aftermath of the Nazi death camps during the post-WWII cleanup. This short film is included as an extra on the Kino Blu-ray of the superb 1946 Orson Welles film noir, The Stranger, but, like Blood of the Beasts, it's a special feature that I will only watch one time.

Alfred Hitchcock's Holocaust film, German Concentration Camps Factual Survey, will inevitably be released on Blu-ray, and I'll buy it, because I'm a Hitchcock completist. It's a film that I'll likely only watch once as well, though.

Yeah, I made it completely through but it is definitely something I won't be revisiting unless someone makes me watch it Clockwork Orange style. Consistently cringe worthy and then some.
