Monday the 15th is President's day so Tuesday would make sense for announcements but it seems it's always a day after we expect it. Wednesday it is.

Due to work and a meeting in Atlanta I haven't watched a Criterion since Monday. Serious Criterion withdrawal is raging right now...

Plus with some offices having a half-day today (mine is!) in addition to the 3-day weekend, the CC crew may check out early today and spend Tuesday the 15th rushing everything together.

I think I like the somewhat cold, sterile look of the original release. The newer one also looks a bit softer, but I'll have to check some more screenshot comparisons to confirm it. I don't know if the differences are enough to justify me purchasing the film twice though, because I plan on getting the Tati set during one of the B&N sales this year. But man, I have an itch to watch PlayTime, and I found a used copy for under $20.

edit: It looks like most of the extras on the original release are included in the box set except for the 1976 BBC Omnibus episode. The box has some new commentaries and an extra documentary as well. I also compared some screenshots of the releases on my PC instead of my tablet, and the 2009 release didn't look as sharp. The film grain appears to be quite a bit larger.
If you go to this page and scroll down to the bottom, you see a 70mm film frame from Playtime and it matches more closely to the newer color timing so I believe it is the more accurate one. Also, 1976 BBC Omnibus episode isn't really missing but rather is moved to the Trafic disc in the Criterion Tati boxset.

The newer transfer was also created partially from the original 65mm negative. There are more screen comparisons here: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-r...ti_blu-ray.htm

So what'd you think of Timothy Carey in this one? It's one of my two or three favorite performances in any of Kubrick's films. Even knowing

I know he handled the situation better than I would have.

I'd have been drenched in my own urine while screaming "MOMMY!" and offering sexual favors in exchange for clemency.

...I am not a brave man.

Bosley was an old school name...I think it was more common back in his day.

The humour here, of course, of me talking about Bosley as an outdated name for a guy everyone thought became outdated himself.

Reading Bosley's reviews is HIGHLY entertaining. I don't agree with them a lot of the time, obviously. But that doesn't make the reviews less entertaining.

Actually, I always enjoy Armond White's reviews of films that I really liked. Heh. Now there is the contrarian of all contrarians. It tough for me to think of White and not think of this, concerning Black Swan:

Quote:
But Shadow And Act’s favorite film critic, Mr Armond White, vehemently disagrees, which isn’t much of a surprise. However, he goes further, comparing the film’s “junk movie decadence” to Kanye West’s 34-minute Runaway music video, which he exalts as a superior work or art (a rare surrealist examination of the black artist’s dilemma, as he sees it) to Aronofsky’s latest work (a nonsense, insipid film that glamorizes white petulance, according to White).

I'm a big fan of Armond White as an entertainer/critic. Sometimes he gets into a repetitive rut, but every few months he comes up with a new howler of a quote. I do enjoy his takedowns of movies I like, but I REALLY enjoy his reviews in the (very) few times I agree with him. I mean, they're usually not even reviews really. It's just an excuse for him to pontificate on the State of Society today and rant about how nothing now compares to anything before 1980. But he wouldn't be as entertaining as he is if they were just simple rants. He goes on these weird tangents, and his run-on sentences are simultaneously incoherent and masterful in their breathlessness.

All that said, I do feel Armond is often on point when it comes to the mainstream media's tendency to overpraise movies that exploit the suffering of African Americans for Art. His takedowns of Precious and 12 Years...in particular raised some good points that few critics were reluctant to speak on.

Have you seen Carey's opus-The World's Greatest Sinner?

Have you read his glowing reviews of Adam Sandler movies like "Jack and Jill" and "That's My Boy"? They're some of the most obvious trolljobs I've ever read.

Is there a more unlikeable character in any Criterion film than this guy?

Crowther's an eloquent, beautiful writer. Too bad his taste in films is rubbish.

Got my Criterion shipment today of The Kid, Death by Hanging and The Emigrants/The New Land. Also down to needing 3 more OOP DVDs after receiving Le Trou and Billy Liar today from eBay auctions.

I'll try to watch The Kid tonight unless I can sweet talk my wife into watching 393 minutes of Jan Troell Valentine magic.

Well, not sure of worse, but this guy isn't exactly likable:

Sure, he's utterly fascinating. But ...
