Looks like they're phasing out the edition of Burdens of Dreams with the book. The standalone DVD comes out March 15th.

She is pretty amazing in the second season of FARGO (which is mighty terrific on the whole, and I highly recommend). How she lost the Golden Globe to Lady Gaga is a terrible and awful joke.

Well I haven't seen "Fargo" even though I keep meaning to go on a binge. And I've already made clear how much I admire the Kirsten's work. But I will say this: Lady Gaga was fairly stunning on AHS.

I had never really thought much of her, or, rather, about her. I sort of knew her schtick and so on, but didn't listen to her music or read about her very often. But I was pretty amazed at what she proved able to do on AHS.

Oh, and even though I didn't watch the game, I did see her sing the National Anthem before the Super Bowl and she just killed it.

Oh, I thought she was fairly dreadful on a dreadful season of AHS.

Eh, different strokes. I thought she fit the mood perfectly.

But your post did remind me that I MUST get around to FINALLY seeing "Fargo."

Haven't seen anyone mention noir regular Elisha Cook Jr.

A more recent favorite of mine is J.T. Walsh.

Also, Walter Brennan. Does he count as a character actor?

JT Walsh was great. I remember he died very suddenly and pretty young of a heart attack. I was a kid who was obsessed with movies when Walsh died and I had just seen him in "Breakdown". How about another Walsh, M. Emmet? M. Emmet Walsh is great at playing dirtbags. Ned Beatty has to be in the discussion for best modern character actors as well. The speech he gives in "Network" is brilliantly done. Charles Durning also has to be at the top of the list.

Interestingly, the movies in the 80s and 90s that had a lot of great character actors were action movies. You had a fairly wooden lead like Arnie, Stallone, Lundgren, Van Damme, Seagal surrounded by a lot of great character actors. Guys William Forsythe, Henry Silva, Powers Boothe, Lance Henriksen, Keith David, Gary Busey, William Sadler, etc.. Powers Boothe is probably one of my favorite modern character actors. He's incredible in films like "Southern Comfort", "Extreme Prejudice" and "Tombstone".

On the topic of great film noir character actors, "Kiss Me Deadly" features several of them. Paul Stewart, Jack Elam and Wesley Addy. Neville Brand was another great character actor from that era. The underrated film noir "Kansas City Confidential" features Preston Foster, Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef and Neville Brand as the four villains. Can't beat that group.

Getting back to Criterion, check out Riot in Cell Block 11, a movie cast entirely with great character actors: Neville Brand, Leo Gordon, Emile Meyer, Frank Faylen and a host of others, including the ubiquitous voice actor Paul Frees.

What are the chances of an announcement today?

I was looking at my limited collection of Criterion Blus, and then looking at my list of films from last year which I've seen (only 20 so far -- I know, sad). And I was thinking, well, they released Two Days, One Night soon after its release. So, are there any of those 20 films that I'd really like to see Criterion release sometime soon?

I came up with two titles:

Phoenix

Macbeth

Granted, along with Carol, those were the two that I rated most highly. And Phoenix is already announced. So, does anyone think there's a snowball's chance in the bad place that they would release Macbeth?

I knew Criterion was releasing Phoenix. But somehow I missed the Starz/Anchor Bay release of Macbeth.

Oh well.

I guess that the other A+ title I saw from last year, Taylor Swift: The 1989 Tour is probably not happening either, eh?

It's a contradiction but I'd say Walter Brennan was the superstar of character actors. He won 3 Oscars and if you watch The Westerner he's the star, even though Gary Cooper gets top billing.
