That cover art is badass!

Unless the UK cover is the same, I think you did good getting that. It looks awesome.

FYI - I'm sure this is old news, but I was in Costco yesterday, and that's a hiddin gem for picking up Criterions. They are 19.99 (so matching the Barnes and Noble sale), and while the selection is sparse (I'd say a dozen titles or so), they rotate the selection regularly and have pretty decent titles - almost always the newest releases.

I can't remember where I heard Altman explain it, but he said the dialog that matters doesn't overlap. Additional dialog is add before and after, and that overlaps.

He also said he got the idea from The Thing From Another World.

Probably would have been cheaper/quicker from AmazonUK?

Is the UK disc also region free?

I watched the new 4K restoration today that I recently imported from Amazon UK. I can sum it up in one word: STUNNING.

I had forgotten just how good this movie really is. And the bonus features are excellent; I don't frequently watch bonus features, but I devoured these. Very informative about the film, its casting, production, behind the scenes, the challenges of filming in a still war damaged Vienna divided between the four occupation zones, and lots of other information. There is particularly good information on the sewer sequence and an interesting look at the famous ferris wheel, recently restored along with the rest of the amusement park by the Soviet authorities. It will also make you fully aware of what an enfant terrible Orson Welles had become by this time, something which damaged his reputation and hindered his career in the long run.

Don't be afraid, if you are still on the fence, about importing this one. My advice is to stop reading this and get on over to Amazon UK now.
Yea I too went for the CC version of The Third Man back when I thought I wanted every OOP Criterion titles. Paid $100 for it with the plastic case. Fortunately when I resold it I was able to at a profit in eBay. When/if I decide to get it again it will definitely be the import version.

I should amend my post to add reason (4) people who do not own both versions should not make baseless assumptions.

That was a blanket statement on 1080 to 4k. It's pretty much a proven fact. I was not implying that the 4k release was not better than the Criterion. Another reason for not buying the 4k release is that for me personally I would have been stuck with a digi book with no cover to replace it and I don't digi.

Capped off a exhausting Friday last night with Monte Hellman's The Shooting. There's a point in the film where you realize that the whole movie is pretty much going to be 95% beautifully composed shots of people riding horseback through a lonely desert landscape, but it somehow manages to increase the tension between the characters even while nothing is 'happening' onscreen except riding, riding, a bit of talking, and lots more riding. The ending is just one of those strange existentialist things that works best when you're seeing it half-tired at 1:00am.

By the way, I saw that this is coming to StudioCanal Blu-ray in March. Not a Criterion edition, obviously, but I am very very much looking forward to owning this. This has been atop my Blu want list for some time.

To any of our forum members who have not seen The Lion in Winter, trust me, this is a must see film. Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn (she won Best Actress for her performance as Queen Eleanor), Nigel Terry, and both Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton in their film debuts.

It's probably been about ten years since I've last seen it, but I will be immediately adding this to my collection, region B locked or no.

I own the DVD and watch it at least a couple of times a year. It's a gem. I love when you have a couple of great actors; at the top of their game, more or less dominating a film and you just sit there in awe. Some of my other top acting duels would be Tracy and March in Inherit the Wind, Burton and Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and O'Toole and Burton in Becket.

I love this kind of "theatrical performances" in the old films.

It wouldn't have been cheaper. It might've been quicker but I only paid $3.99 for shipping and I think that means they send it by sea turtle.

Didn't know the region, doesn't matter. A reviewer in the link says it's region A though...
