Beta, that set is very nice looking, but with all the titles it is going to be very difficult to finish them all. If you can snap one photo of the inside, that would be much obliged. I was thinking about ordering it, especially with the coupon that was valid early on, but hesitated since I already own some of the dvd and BD's already. I'll see what CC releases before the next B&N sale and may end up pulling the trigger.

SSoS would immediately become my top Criterion disc. It's perhaps the most underrated film in cinema history. Not even 1 Oscar nomination in 1958 (for 1957), and, while it would've been hard pressed to beat Bridge on the River Kwai for Best Picture anyway, I would pick it now as the better, more important film.

Just an FYI-

At my local Best Buy tonight, copies of Black Orpheus were out. Our trucks come on Tues. and Fri. so I guess they just decided to put them out since our new releases come a week or 2 in advance. This is not the first time they've done that at my location, and I know from you guys that it is common in other locations.

What if we all lived in the same location???????????

CG, you mentioned hoping if Flicker Alley will be releasing a Blu-ray? (like many other people who would love their releases in Blu). I asked David Shepard (Film Preservation Associates and responsible for many of the high quality silent film releases) if there are plans for a Blu-ray release from FA (especially of his films that he is directly involved with) and here is his reply:

At this moment in time, DVD sales of our silent film editions are such that Blu-Ray would definitely not be prudent.

We have been mastering in HD for a while, so there is a possibility of titles on Blu-Ray in the future, but at least for the silent films, none are presently planned.

Flicker Alley has some releases coming which are newer films and I believe Jeff Masino does intend to issue one in Blu-Ray to see how it does.

Do you know if any sites take Criterion DVD artwork (either the actual artwork or user created ones) and scale them down to Blu-ray size?

Not that I know of. But I'm sure there are if you look for it.

hello all. I am somewhat new to the criterion collection. I have known about it for years due to Chasing Amy but call it being young and dumb or just plain ignorant but I never gave other criterions a chance. I have slowly beefed up my criterion collection on blu and have enjoyed all the ones I have. Some more than others but still enjoyed none-the-less. Anyway, just wanted to share my criterion experience and i am looking forward to discussing the collection with you guys.

Yeah I saw that on CriterionForum. Thanks.

I have a feeling their first blu could be Clouzot's Inferno. That Keystone Chaplin set looks nice. This fall/winter is going to be crazy in terms of releases.

Glad you are expanding your cinema knowledge and trying out some of these films... you won't like everything but I'll wager that everything you do see will introduce you to different techniques and methods of storytelling than the usual Hollywood fare, and you never know what you'll connect with until you see it and experience it. Welcome!

Sanjuro

Initially this movie bored me, and it took about an 1hr in to really catch my attention but after that hour went by and was about 90% into the movie. Same type of plot as Yojimbo but a few minor differences including a little dry humor. Just like Yojimbo i respect this film because of its authenticity and brilliant direction. Very Pleased to have this in my collection but let me make something clear this is NOT YOJIMBO. You could consider it to be it's little brother i guess.
[Show spoiler]The last fight scene was pretty nice and what a striking blow.
Recommended.

4/5

Once again if you like Yojimbo i would procrastinate on this purchase.

What are you guys doing with your empty digipak/cardboard cases? I just got my cases for Bottle Rocket and The 400 Blows. So I don't know if I should just hang onto them, or if there's a market out there for them.

finally got a chance to sit down and watch the Seventh Seal today with my girlfriend, I've been anticipating it for a while ever since I read the little synopsis a few weeks ago.

It did not disappoint, definitely one of my favorite criterions to date!

Is it to early to speculate Criterion's November releases?
