I mean, they included Akerman, after all.

I don't understand why they included half the people they did and left off Zulawski, Haru, and Rivette.

I mean there were film critics, sound mixers, producers, editors, etc. that were listed that I'm sure most people have never heard of.

Woohooooo for Stutterer winning the best action live short!

I saw all the nominated Oscar live-action shorts in a movie theater last month, and this was my favorite, by far, of the films. It's only 12 minutes long but so so good.

Silence of the Lambs
Ivan The Terrible Parts I and II
Hard Boiled
Le Samourai
Vampyr
Great Expectations
Ran (hoping the 4K remaster makes its way to disc soon)
Alexander Nevsky
The Killer
Thief of Bagdad (1940)
Life of Brian (although I don't mind the current BD)
This Is Spinal Tap (assuming it could be improved)

As much as I love Spartacus, The Rock, and RoboCop, I'm pretty happy with their current Blu-Ray releases and don't see how Criterion could improve them (other than packaging). Wouldn't mind Armageddon for the director's cut and extras...but no, let's be real, this is Criterion we're talking about here.

Anything else would be a blind-buy.

this has probably been answered 100 times, but i still don't know.
any rights issues in regards to releasing lynch's lost highway and inland empire? im in north america, so I would like to get a criterion release of it, considering how amazing the mulholland dr. and eraserhead criterion editions have proved. it would be tragic if theres problems with distribution rights.

or is it just a matter of time before those get released?

I'll second that.

It seemed like all of the live action shorts, except Stutterer, revolved around war or politics in one way or another. Stutterer stood out for me too, as the best of the bunch.

Spotlight just won Best Picture. Nothing against it, but I don't understand how it beat The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Awesome to see Leo won. And great speech.

Because in the 21st century, good journalism is non-existent. Muckraking and investigative reporting have been long absent, replaced by the latest trends on social media, access reporting, and rushing to be first.

Spotlight shines on the importance of investigative journalism. Imagine how different our world would be if the reporters at the Boston Globe just dismissed the entire incident as people moaning about the Catholic Church. These scandals ruined so many lives, and the saddest part about it all is that it was happening everywhere, right under everyone's noses, and being covered up by the higher ups.

The movie is good not great in my book, the sad part is no one on my family recall much fuzz being made when that happened in 2001, not sure how much has exactly changed because of those stories, but it is at least great to see these scandals being brought to everyone's attention.

My biggest issue with the film is that it focuses too much in the research and while that might be the whole point I think the characters suffer a bit as we don't get much insight into their life and motivations.

Well a journalist's first obligation is to the truth and first loyalty to citizens, so I guess that's the only motivation they need.

Haven't thought of it that way, I guess that makes this kind of films incredibly hard to make in a way that is completely satisfying to me.

I remember liking All the President's Men, but it's been a while since I saw it.

But I am a fan of courtroom dramas which also show a certain procedural kind of investigation which I really enjoy, but mostly because they usually explore their characters about their perspectives on the issues they are facing, The Verdict comes to mind with another catholic institution related issue.

For me it would be The Third Man, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Grand Illusion, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Spartacus, Beastie Boys Video Anthology, This Is Spinal Tap, and Life of Brian
Ones I've seen, and ones I have not, including The Man Who Fell to Earth (I recorded it off of TCM, but the showing started late, so the last 30 minutes were cut off. ), Last Year at Marienbad (with the same gorgeous Digipak packaging, please), Lawrence Olivier's Shakespeare (Hamlet, Richard III, Henry V), The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Human Condition, Kurosawa's Ran, Andrei Rublev, Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. That's to start.

I saw Chantal Akerman included in tonight's Academy Award In Memoriam segment tonight. I really want to explore her filmography. To see the reverence people have for the lady, and her work, makes me really want to see what everybody is raving about. Jeanne Dielman is on Hulu, and I am going to watch it by next weekend.

I have yet to see The Revenant, but Mad Max: Fury Road was not on the level of the other films. It had almost no chance to win the top prize, and it didn't.

Finally people can shut up about Leonardo DiCapri not winning an Oscars.

Thank ****, he's a great actor and all but people are obsessed and forget the other talents that are nominated. They also ignore the many other actors/film makers that havn't won one.

Universal owns distribution rights for Lost Highway, unless that changed. Not sure about Inland Empire, but the region free German release is probably as good as it's going to look since it was shot on such bad DV video. But there's no "problem" with the rights.

No Abe Vigoda, either.

On a more positive note, glad to see Morricone finally win one, albeit for one of his weaker scores.
