I cannot honestly tell you but considering people bought The Graduate like it was going OOP, you might have to wait until they get more in stock. It might be best to ask them directly but I do have a feeling it is because your purchases are backordered.

Although a somewhat modern release....Down by Law, by a mile.. Has easily the best depth (you almost feel you are in the film at times) and clarity you will find on any CC release done in B&W.

Here's a few examples of what I consider top-shelf Criterions in terms of PQ:

B&W
Down By Law
Hiroshima mon amour
La dolce vita
Last Year at Marienbad
L'avventura
Persona
Seconds
The Innocents

Color
Belle de jour
Black Narcissus
Certified Copy
Days of Heaven
Secret Sunshine
The Red Shoes
The Thin Red Line

I was watching The Seventh Seal last night and that one's pretty darn good, though I don't know if it's the best.

...Harakiri is another great one.
Some great transfers have already been mentioned but the latest title that impressed me was The Kid. That one had my jaw on the floor at times.

I just love great black and white transfers.

...maybe even more than great color transfers.
Agreed, there is something special about great B&W Cinematography, just as it is with great Color ones, but there are a lot of more factors involved with color so it comes down more to a personal taste, sometimes I feel certain films color is a bit faded and doesn't look as good, others have pretty weird or muted color palette, and as I remember you don't like the films with very vibrant technicolor, but that might be the intention on those films, with Black & White there are just various degrees of light and shadows involved with the intent but I usually like them all.

Forgot that then there is the issue about if the restoration got it right with color films, since there are several that are debatable whether there is a color bias that should or should not be there.

For example: as good as the Demy set films like The Young Girls of Rochefort or The Umbrellas of Cherbourg I can't help but notice something weird in the color palette, especially when there are a lot of white or the sky visible.

Just got an email from Criterion. Apparently they oversold Zatoichi:The Blind Swordsman during the flash sale, and to manufacture more will take 2-3 months

They did send me a $10.00 dollar gift certificate for the inconvenience.

I think that Ivan's Childhood looks incredible. It has an almost 3D quality of depth to the image at times. I especially noticed it during the scene with the female soldier in the seemingly endless birch tree forest.

Same here with The Kid. I'd only seen it completely on Youtube prior but the difference was night and day while watching the blu.

Woo! Amazon sale! Just placed an order for Two-Lane Blacktop and Sullivan's Travels. Both are blind-buys for me. Had the former on my mind for a while -- I figure it'll fit in with my other road movies (like Vanishing Point). Wanted the latter because the premise caught my eye.

Almost pulled the trigger on Speedy and Downhill Racer, which would be more blind-buys. I figure I can save those for the next B&N sale, and maybe rent them first. In their place, I decided to order a used copy of the Beastie Boys anthology -- seemed a little cheaper on the marketplace.

I'm going to have to back down from this Amazon sale... I already ordered La Haine (thanks Amazon, putting it for $5 less the next day) and I want two other animated films that are in the $15 range.

Makes sense considering your Blu-Ray collection! Enjoy your first Criterion.

There is also a sale going on on the American Amazon, if you are interested, you can get the original The Uninvited for really cheap.

JanusFilms updated their cover photo on Facebook with an image of A Touch of Zen. It's safe to say that it will eventually be released on Blu-ray.
