Sorry, I only know about those two. It should have some unique supplements though.

all 3 of the films you recommended are home runs.. I didn't just 'like' those 3, I 'loved' those 3.

so, thank you! and keep the recommendations coming.

wow, really?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Hidden-F...kAAOSwaA5WloLK

it seems like all people did was complain about that extra disc... it is hardly "OOP," but even the loose acquisition of that acronym makes people stupid.

if anybody wants to throw $50 at me for any of my dual format titles, take a look at my collection.

Wow that's so stupid. I almost wish I didn't open my copy so I could sell it now. Still might

Had been wanting to watch Howard's End for a few years, and I finally got a copy at a good price recently. I watched it last night and I was surprised. It wasn't really what I expected — and I really liked it!

I liked the movie as a whole: photography, cast, tone, setting(s), not too slow or melodramatic for the genre, and the score was pretty good too. With that in mind, I wanted to ask if anyone could recommend another, similar title I might look into (not limited to Criterion). I also read up on Merchant Ivory and their other releases, but I'm not sure where to start given my tastes. From Merchant Ivory's Criterion releases, I think I might like A Room With A View, The Europeans, The Bostonians, Roseland, Savages.

In case anyone wants to mention Barry Lyndon, I already love it

As good of an incentive as that is, I still think I can wait until next flash sale for Manchurian Candidate and A Brighter Summer Day and that way I also add whatever titles I choose that gets announced in the next four months.
But...but...I've already earmarked March as "Warner Archive and FOX Connect" month.

I love same day shipping. Ordered Paris, Texas and Love Streams this morning at 4am, went downstairs to eat lunch at noon, and the package was already sitting outside the front door.

Cannot wait to get The Manchurian Candidate and Bicycle Thieves at the end of the month!!

I'm not sure if anyone else got this e-mail but Criterion announced the premiere of Heart of a Dog (a recent theatrical release) on demand. I wonder if this means a future Blu-ray release (it would be the first teaming between Criterion and HBO, Tanner '88 wasn't distributed by HBO though they aired it).

Ivory is one of my favourite directors.
If you enjoyed Howards end definitely watch The Remains of the Day, which reunites Thompson and Hopkins and other members of the crew (cinematographer, composer, editor, production designer etc.)
Also I LOVE Maurice (But that is a gay film so I don't know how you would feel about this), and of course A Room with a View is great too (although I didn't think so when I first saw it in my teens, but I was immature then and couldn't fully appreciate it).
I've also seen The Europeans, The Bostonians and Heat and Dust.
I think I liked better the third one, but all are worth checking.

Also, you might want to look at The Age of Innocence by Scorsese, my favourite period romantic film. (but maybe this is a bit melodramatic for you at times)
Other non-Ivory films along those lines of the above films are Sense and Sensibility (with Thompson) and Shadowlands (with Hopkins).

And of course, another masterpiece in the period romantic genre is The piano (but that has a completely different atmosphere/setting than the afore-mentioned films)

Among foreign films I would suggest the French Cyrano (1990), Indochine and La Reine Margot.

eBay is entertaining, although I've never used it to sell anything, because it's just too much of a hassle for me.

You can read all about this drama in the dedicated thread, but the Grindhouse Releasing Blu-ray of Pieces (1982) went live with a limited edition that includes a little jigsaw puzzle that fits inside the case. People are absolutely losing their heads about this, and some folks are paying eBay sellers $50 or so for the puzzle. If my copy shows up with the puzzle this week, however, then I'll just look at the puzzle for two seconds, shrug it off with a "That's pretty cool.", keep it in the case forever after, and never touch it again. If it doesn't show up with the puzzle, then I'll still think to myself, "That's pretty cool."

I never liked the Criterion Dual Format clunkiness, but I'm happy with my edition of The Hidden Fortress, and with the rest of the Dual Formats, for that matter.

Got my order! Very excited opening them, though ran into two snags.

Missing booklet in Cries and Whispers, and Rififi was quite messed up-the back of the case was torn and crushed, and the Blu-ray disc was loose (which does happens sometimes, but there were a bunch of scratches on it).

Emailed the Criterion people, and hopefully they'll be as helpful as I have both heard and experienced in the past.

Pull that trigger. You know you want to.

Seriously, isn't that what a gift card is for?

I'm not sure what the balance is of seriousness and facetiousness you're intending in that statement, but...

I've been coming to the conclusion that in order to not drive myself crazy wondering what I should buy among the "boutique" labels (i.e., the ones I can't find at my local Target or Best Buy) every time I have a little disposable income, and to not forsake any particular label in favor of others, I have to "rotate" through the labels from month to month. I haven't actually managed to succeed at that, though, as something always comes up at random to throw me off.

I go through phases. I go through Criterion phases, I go through Warner Archive phases, I go through Twilight Time phases, I go through Code Red phases, I go through Scream Factory phases, I go through Olive phases, and I go through Cohen Media phases. Right now, I'm in an Arrow phase.

I still put on my Sunday best and made a showing at the Criterion Flash Sale a few days ago, but am now five pounds lighter from the slashed grocery budget.

Yeah, I'm kinda waiting for the blu-rays I want to run out of stock near the end of the month so I have the cheaper prices honored when the blu-rays ship if they stay out of stock until April.

So which Lynch film has the least amount of chance of gettin' the Criterion treatment: Lost Highway or The Straight Story?

Personally, I have no use for the DVDs, so the BD-only editions would be preferable to the DF editions. But my Collector Gene rebels at the idea of not having the edition that came first. So when I got my copy of Throne of Blood from Amazon's Criterion Japanese Films Sale the other month, I confess to being rather disappointed that it was the BD-only "Second Printing".

I have a like new dual format copy of Thief if anyone is interested.

I'm going to start the bidding at $500.

Though I'm willing to come down to $425 if you can pay in raw cocaine.

...those are friend prices.

Those dual format editions were a steal, I sold a bunch of the DVD discs as lots, Zatoichi, Demy, all the rest, and just recently the dvd disc only of Tie me Up, Tie me Down for $9, I thought it was maybe a bit pricey so I was ready to negotiate but someone got it on eBay without issue in under one day.

So that really helped bring the costs even lower
