Truffaut's Two English Girls. It is a period drama that is somewhat comparable to Jules and Jim. TEG has more of a "period piece" feel to it, has less style, and has a very stiff Jean-Pierre Leaud as the male lead. Not bad, though.
Oh, thank you for thinking of me!
I do know about this film, and it's in my to watch list.
(by the way, I haven't seen Jules and Jim either)

the source material for both films are books written by the same author, Henri-Pierre Roché. J&J has its share of detractors on this thread (not me.. I love it,) but for fans of period dramas, I think Two English Girls is worth a watch.

Have you seen The Story of Adele H? I saw that recently and was a bit underwhelmed, it's another period piece that I noticed was compared on a review to Two English Girls, I've yet to love anything after the 60s by Truffaut, although I still have plenty to see, 12 to be exact, and still hoping Criterion release Shoot the Pianist one that I always feel the urge to buy since the UK release is so cheap but I always end up not doing it knowing Criterion might release a better version.

-Ikiru
-Nashville
-Dressed to Kill
-My Own Private Idaho
-The Killers
-The Freshman
-Safety Last!
-The Gold Rush
-Master of the House
-The Phantom Carriage
-The Complete Jean Vigo
-Hoop Dreams
I know you said only two, but these three are my favorites from your list. You really can't go wrong with any of those.

I watched The Long Goodbye on TCM last night for the first time.

I loved it.

Now THAT is a film that deserves a Criterion release.

...maybe Sterling Hayden's greatest performance.

Yes, I've seen The Story of Adele H. I liked it and I prefer it to Two English Girls. It seems that some of the regulars here (mja345 is one) have seen every film by some of their favorite directors. I'm not sure there is a single director who made more than 10 films from whom I've seen everything. I like Truffaut a lot, so I'm kinda making an attempt to see all of his work.

One thing that was pointed out in a review I once read is that Truffaut's female characters are usually never normal; they are always some kind of crazy or they are tormented by one thing or another. I'm actually finding that to be a bit tiresome, although I prefer Adele to the the Muriel character in TEG.

Another thing I noticed is that Truffaut shot a lot of his films on studio sets and as a result, some of the films have a similar feel to it. The colors are a little bit washed out it seems and the films don't really breathe like I think they need to. (don't know if that makes sense.)

I've seen these from Truffaut and would rank them accordingly (off the top of my head):

1 Jules and Jim
2 The 400 Blows
3 Day For Night
4 The Last Metro
5 The Soft Skin
6 The Story of Adele H
7 The Woman Next Door
8 Finally, Sunday
9 Two English Girls
10 A Gorgeous Girl Like Me
11 The Bride Wore Black

..and I've seen one of his short films, Les Mistons, which for its 17 minutes or so, was very good.

I'm hoping for a Criterion The Woman Next Door.
i had seen it in my teens, and so I'm nostalgically attached.
I can't bring myself buying the UK release, because on one hand I'd be curious to see what a Criterion release would be like, and on the other it's part of a larger collection with the same menus' style and covers and my ocd thing prevents me from buying just one of the collection.

I received flash sale order on Saturday and in a similar situation with Beatles - A Hard Day's Night...I had the Digipak and will look to trade the scanavo case edition that came with The Rock Box with some other criterion in my wishlist...

I prefer digipaks too...

The Long Goodbye is my favorite Raymond Chandler novel.

The film is so different, but I love it just the same. More than anything, Elliot Gould really captures the outsider aspects of the Philip Marlowe character. The change in time periods from the novel to the film was an interesting move, but an oddly successful one.

Sterling Hayden is awesome, but I'm going to go with The Killing and The Asphalt Jungle for my favorites from him.

I noticed Jean Renoir's The Lower Depths has Blu-ray listed by it on Janus Film's website.

It's inferior to Kurosawa's adaptation, so I do hope it comes with both just like the DVD set, though I'd still pick this one up if it came as a standalone.

I'm sure the novel is great.

But it doesn't have Arnold Schwarzenegger in it.

...Raymond Chandler could never have envisioned that.

RE: Truffaut

I'd say that Day for Night and The 400 Blows are two of the greatest things ever made.

I love films that explore how grueling filmmaking can be, such as 8 1/2, Contempt, and Day for Night.

A part of me is still hoping against hope that the Clint Eastwood film, White Hunter Black Heart, could end up as a Criterion title.

It's a thinly fictionalized movie about John Huston's filming of The African Queen.
