Seven Samurai is my favorite Kurosawa, but Red Beard is such a close 2nd that it's almost a tie.

Madadayo is up there too for me. I think it's underrated. Maybe it's just underseen.

It don't get no more powerful than this imo.

I need more Kurosawa. I've limited myself to Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Bad Sleep Well, and Yojimbo.

But Kurosawa's broad and versatile appeal casts a long shadow over 20th century cinema.
I haven't seen anything from Imamura, but my interest piqued just yesterday when I was exploring the films (reading about them, that is) in this set:

8 film box set of one director for $50? tempting. don't know if I'd like him, but this would be a fun way to find out.

Glad you posted this. A lot of people complain about the ending to High and Low but I don't see anything wrong with it.
[Show spoiler]Critics say it tried to "explain" the criminal and was unnecessary, but I'd argue the complete opposite: the beauty of the ending is that nothing was resolved by their meeting and both men are left ultimately unsatisfied by their conversation.

He's definitely an acquired taste, but he's a lot less extreme and oblique than some of the other Japanese New Wave directors. The thing with Imamura though is that sex is basically at the core of a lot of the themes he explores, and some people find his approach rather too in-your-face at times. But he has a streak of quirky black humor that is ahead of his time.

Intentions of Murder is probably my favorite of his (not in the set you posted) but he's a fairly consistent director overall if you dig what he's doing.

Isn't that OOP?

I have seen like 5 of his films and my favorite so far is Vengeance is Mine, then probably The Insect Woman and Pigs and Batleships, would be nice if Criterion upgraded their boxset I've yet to see Intentions of Murder.

Most powerful last shot in film history for me.

Critics are like my ex-wife.

...all they do is complain.

It's OOP in the sense that it's a limited edition and the initial print run is all they will be printing, but it doesn't appear to be sold out yet in most places.

I was putting some new arrivals away on my shelves tonight, and i thought of a question in regard to my (and everyone else's) film collections.

How many directors are there that you own all of the films they have directed?

A few ground rules:

- Short films do not count, you only have to have their feature length films.
- Lost films do not count
- Director has to have directed at least 5 feature films
- If their latest film hasn't had a home release yet it doesn't (so, if you have all of Tarantino's films, but don't have Hateful Eight, that's Ok).

For me the directors on this list would be:

Akira Kurosawa
Yasujiro Ozu
Terrence Malick
Wong Kar Wai
Takeshi Kitano
Hayao Miyazaki

Anyone else care to share?

Haha, damn. I was gonna try to be cute and post Charles Laughton.

I love certain directors but I can't say there are any that I've felt I had to own every single film from them.

I *will* say that Jean Rollin takes up the most amount of shelf space in my BD collection. I actually now find this to be very odd.

Marketa Lazarova looked interesting so I decided to buy it.

If I save up enough again this month, I think Harakiri will be my next purchase.

Like all their films? or the ones out on blu-ray?

for me only these if I count only blu-rays:

Jacques Demy
Jacques Tati
F.W. Murnau
Krzysztof Kieslowski

The first two, pretty much anyone with the Criterion sets will be the same

Like if a director has made 30 films but only 3 available in US, can I list then? There could be a few more then...otherwise the following comes to mind

Jacques Tati
David Fincher (missing Panic Room)
Quentin Tarantino (missing Hateful Eight)

I agree. I'm heading back to NYC next weekend (wish I could be there for that Criterion Live event though), to see New Order live in concert. Should be kickasssss!

I did buy this and was going to watch it last night in fact.

I like the fact that Jarmusch did an audio commentary for it (which is rare, since Jarmusch rarely gives commentaries).

I'm interested, though... what did you see in this film that isn't in other Melville films? Because Le Samourai is very, very sparse. My personal opinion (a minority one, it seems) is that he applied the same style to much greater effect in films like Le Deuxieme Souffle, Le Doulos, and even Un Flic.
Ha, well, I should've elaborated on my point. The only other Melville film I've seen is Le Cercle Rouge. The main draw for Le Samuraļ is Delon; and while he appears in Le Cercle Rouge, too, I liked the suave, sexy, mysterious hitman he plays in Le Samuraļ better. I watched both films a while ago, and don't remember them all that much, but I do remember thinking that Le Cercle Rouge felt long and somewhat uninteresting. I probably should give both of them another go, as well as some more Melville films (as I'm obviously deficient in his work).

Bought Sword of Doom, Throne of Blood, and Hidden Fortress on Amazon when they were all 16.99-got the first two, but Amazon really sold through their stock of Fortress. Order was placed in mid-January and it still is unknown when it will be shipped, and it can only be bought from third parties on the site (at pretty high prices). Hope this ends up coming through.
