So I doubt they are investing solely for the Theatrical run, but who knows.
I'm not sure about the involvement of Criterion, but Cineric did the restoration for the Japanese Blu-ray, so it must be the same one as the Japanese Blu-ray.

I hope Criterion would release Here Comes Mr. Jordan, along with its remake, Heaven acant Wait (1978). Criterion has relationships with both Sony & Paramount, so I think it is possible to release both (both of them are not yet available on Blu-ray from any company).

Since they released Ride the Pink Horse with Robert Montgomery, I hope they are interested in HCMJ as well.

I'm almost 100% sure Here Comes Mr. Jordan will get released due to the New Years Drawing clue. It was almost blatantly obvious. Now how soon it will be coming is the real mystery.

Soon you will have the choice of buying a UK Criterion or the US Criterion to avoid the UK's rating logos all over the cover and such.

Just to clarify, you can get artwork for any Criterion film regardless if it has ever been released in a Scanavo case? If so what is the name of the contact at Criterion? I'm not just going to send 5 dollars blindly.

I don't believe that's the case. I don't think they have Scanavo artwork for non Scanavo releases.

So do they not offer artwork with empty case for any Criterion movies? Or what I have been reading it sounds like you have to e-mail them and it is still the $5? I saw they took them off the website.

You buy artwork buy emailing good old Claire not got email at hand but I've bought a few in past just can't get digital artwork sent in style of case ones - if you want that you'd have to make yourself

I'm starting to get anxiety about the 50%. I have accumulated quite a list of "want to get" Criterion titles, and have been asking myself "What if they never have it again?"

Worried some titles will go out of print.

That can happen with any blu-ray, just keep up with Criterion news and you'll be fine.

Last night, I watched my Criterion Blu-ray of The American Friend.

I love how Wim Wenders combines his road trip visual aesthetics with tightly-wound film noir story setups. The end result is an oddly laid-back affair, where Dennis Hopper's Tom Ripley exudes an outsider vibe not unlike that of Elliott Gould's Philip Marlowe in the 1973 film version of The Long Goodbye, that is occasionally interrupted by sequences of tense urgency, mainly a subway scene and a train scene. I like movie scenes where amateurs are forced by circumstances to commit murder, and, in this regard, Bruno Ganz's subway sequence reminded me of the scene where Al Pacino has to kill two people in The Godfather.

Many classic-era film noir movies, with The Big Sleep probably being the most prominent, have a few narrative loose ends that remain untied, simply because the plot takes a backseat to unforgettably dynamic interactions between iconic characters. The American Friend is not dissimilar to those noir films in this regard, and I recommend that viewers approach the story as a loosely-narrated version of Patricia Highsmith source material that focuses on the odd friendship that develops between Dennis Hopper's Tom Ripley and Bruno Ganz's Jonathan Zimmerman. These are two lost souls that recognize one another in a world where neither truly fit in, and this recognition of souls drives the story through some unexpected turns. It helps that the world in which these characters make their way is beautifully filmed. In fact, this is one of the most remarkable-looking 1970s films that I have seen.

The inclusion of Nicholas Ray and Samuel Fuller in the cast adds a lot to this film's oddly forlorn sense of meandering wonder.

The commentary track and the interviews are full of good anecdotes about the filming on the various sets of The American Friend.

Well done, Criterion!

I wasn't aware this is an adaptation of a different novel than both Talented Mr. Ripley and Purple Noon, so even if this is more loosely based on the material I was quite confused by why nothing in it was familiar to me , I was reading Ripley's Game is the one that is based on this same novel, but I don't really remember much of it.

Purple Noon while more traditional is probably still my favorite of the Ripley adaptations.

I've been making my way through the Eclipse set Pearls of the Czech New Wave.

So far I've finished Daisies (brilliant live action Looney Tunes) and Report on the Party and the Guests. Jan Klusak, though he was primarily a music composer in his career, once again shows that he could have had a long acting career playing creeps and weirdos (he was the priest in Valerie and her Week of Wonders). Really great stuff, and I think Report is still relevant today in terms of how easily a mob mentality is formed and how willing some people are to let themselves be intimidated and controlled in a sociological context. And we've probably all experienced at some point in our lives some creepy stranger sidling up to us and trying to talk us up in a vaguely threatening manner and not going away when we tell them to. Like the picnic-goers here, we probably would be better off if we punched the stranger out but in most cases we still don't punch pesky people who invade our private space out of "civility" (not to mention not wanting to get charged for assault).

Sounds like four films altogether.

I have seen Purple Noon and I remember seeing the trailers for TTMR back in the day. Wasn't aware of Ripley's Game or The American Friend at all until now.

Subbed. Good work. BTW, your top 5 movies? Two of them I agree with, two are definitely possibles...haven't seen the fifth to judge (A Better Tomorrow).

I do give you props for Birdman though. I just have the standard Blu/Digital edition, but it was definitely one of my favorite movies of last year. Went into it knowing what to expect and got more than I hoped for. Michael Keaton was perfect for that movie.

Okay, in the course of a month's time, went on an epic Japanese Criterion binge buy.

-Seven Samurai
-The Samurai Trilogy
-Harakiri
-Throne of Blood
-Yojimbo/Sanjuro
-Rashomon
-Three Outlaw Samurai
-Kagemusha
-Gate of Hell
-Lady Snowblood Collection
-The Hidden Fortress Re-release (due to ship/arrive around end of March)

I think I'm down to just a couple left I want to get. Only ones I know of that are may-buys are Sansho the Bailiff, Kuroneko and Sword of Doom. Anyone have input on these or can tell me of any others that are missing from the list? PM me too if you like.
