Anyone here have any strong opinions on Hollis Frampton?

I'm looking to up the weirdness factor in my Criterion collection.

Would the Frampton Odyssey be a good way to go?

...it's either that or Sweet Movie.

On a related note, anyone have any sense of whether Frampton Comes Alive! might get a Criterion release anytime soon?

...it seems like the logical next step after the release of Odyssey.

Get House, Branded to Kill, or Godard's Week End instead.

Buy it. It's a film that pleasantly surprised me, and it's absolutely gorgeous to watch in HD with all the colours. The supplements are just as enjoyable as the film. I love the soundtrack too, and often randomly start singing the last song in the film.

Off the top of my head I can't remember any other direct reference to the Criterion Collection in a movie or v show. "Me, Earl and the Dying Girl" did feature a lot of films from the collection though, in various forms.

In "While We're Young", there's also a stack of fake Criterions on a counter (they were fictional titles from a character's films in the movie).
That's because Greg, and Earl were film nerds, Earl to a lesser extent though. I mean, they did
[Show spoiler]remake Aguirre the Wrath of God at age 12, among many other Criterion type films
. Did they put that in the film? I only read the novel and loved the shit out of it. It's like the anti-The Fault in Our Stars.

Should you buy them? Yes. You should buy every single Criterion title.

Before you buy Frampton check out this riveting video that is a personal favorite from his collection...

Not personally, I know there are others who like his experimental films. Here's a sample:

Oh yea, forgot that other moment from Eastbound! Haha, love Kenny Powers and that show.

I saw Me and Earl and the Dying Girl in the theater, good movie and I did love all the references to films that as you say are in the CC like the Fellini films, etc. I still have yet to see While We're Young (and Baumbach's even newer one, Mistress America), but I look forward to watching and I'll look out for that moment.

What happens at the 1:59 mark is one of the most mind-blowing things I've ever seen in a movie.

...that is intense.

If you live and breathe avant-garde and experimental films (I mean really experimental), sure. In fact, buy both Frampton and Brakhage. However, being that I strongly disliked both sets, I would say, "Good God no."

There's only so much a man can take before he reaches his breaking point. For me, that was the first film of each set, especially Brakhage. I can't believe I watched all 50 of Brakhage's films. Most of them were merely random blotches of color sped up with flashes and other seizure-inducing effects.

I liked that set, but Frampton is a bit odd for an experimental filmmaker. His experimental films are not really all that experimental, imo. They're nothing approaching Brakhage in terms of exploring just what film is or can be. They're "safe" in a way that I usually don't associate with experimental filmmaking. I'd call them "bourgeois experimental" if I were being mean (I did say I liked them).

Go to Youtube first and check out some of the titles listed on the set, there are bound to be some there.

Now if you want truly weird (as in "completely non-narrative, non-figurative, scare-away-your-guests experimental filmmaking"), Stan Brakhage is your man. Unfortunately, you really do need to see it on a big screen to get the full visual impact. Most of his movies are completely silent, so visuals are all there is. I saw the first set Criterion released on a 27" CRT TV and didn't like it. Then I caught one of his "weird Pollock painting" films on a big screen and it's a completely different experience, much more impressive. The buzzing of a 16mm projector in the background helped a bit too.

Last night I watched The Magnificent Ambersons, and I liked it more than Citizen Kane. I own The Lady from Shanghai, but I can never get past 30 minutes. Why hasn't The Magnificent Ambersons been released on Blu-ray?

I'm a fan. Here are a few awards it received (per wikipedia), for what it's worth.

(from wikipedia):
"Awards and honors
Black Orpheus won the Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the 1960 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film and the 1961 BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In the last case, Brazil was credited together with France and Italy."

Give it another chance. There are very few film noirs that I would rank above it.

That is a true riddle. Was it ever even officially released on DVD? I got my copy budled with Citizen Kane on Blu and I see it's only available from third party sellers on amazon. (And at a hefty price too!)

It was very hard for me to get past the accent Welles. As in several false starts over several years.

And I'm glad I didn't force things. When I finally was able to get past it I enjoyed the movie quite a bit (and the BD really is gorgeous at times) and I doubt that would have been the case if I'd just gritted my teeth and forced myself to sit through.

I asked that very same question just a few weeks ago. It appears it did get a separate DVD release.
