Someone should give me that Drawing Restraint 9 DVD so I can watch the bathtub "sex scene" again... You think you want to watch Bjork in the bath but then you realize the mistake you've made.

Edit: Poster above spoiled the movie. Don't watch it anymore.

It's the same case with American Splendor. Underground comics creators hold a very narrow appeal with an audience who aren't already familiar with them. If you love the sub-genre and its history, they're fascinating and fun. But if you don't care for the whole genre, eccentric artists, and movement, then these films will do nothing for you.

Honestly, I have only a fairly casual familiarity with the work of R. Crumb, Harvey Pekar or underground comics, but I am a huge fan of both "American Splendor" and "Crumb". But I did at least have some familiarity going into both films, which helped. I think viewers who are not comfortable watching very eccentric, at times tortured, people will not enjoy "Crumb" that much.

RIP Keith Emerson

I saw Emerson, Lake and Palmer in concert back in 1992, during their reunion tour, and was awestruck at Emerson's keyboarding. Man, this year sucks.

I know before we walked about the possibility of Until The End Of The World getting the Criterion treatment.

I just noticed it got released in France last year. Looks like the full 300 minute cut. No idea how region-friendly it is, but Amazon claims it's region-free. No idea if it'd have forced subs though. Back cover makes it look like it's a 4K remaster -- one of the reviews claims it's director-approved.

I might take a chance on importing this later. Anybody have this already? Any info on it?

Anybody think this is a good sign that it could get a US release?

Thank god we can all have our own opinions. Look around now in the dark corners, and there are more prog rock bands then there are punk ones. Most proggers were smart enough not to have the live fast, die young attitude.

It's particularly fascinating because William Gates and Arthur Agee are growing up in Chicago while Michael Jordan is entering the prime of his career. You constantly feel the importance that the game plays in both William and Arthur's lives. I can't say enough about how fantastic that film is. "For All Mankind" is incredible as well. Both "Gimme Shelter" and "Don't Look Back" are very well-done, but I prefer "Gimme Shelter". "The War Room" is worth picking up if you have even a moderate interest in politics. "Salesman" is also remarkable, but is only available on DVD.

I think "Crumb" is brilliant, but, in my experience, it's a bit polarizing. I've watched it with people who love it as much as I do, but I've also talked to people who think it's dreary and who aren't absorbed by the character study of Robert Crumb. "Hearts and Minds" is excellent as well, but I also know that a lot of people are bothered by the fact that it is very one-sided.
I recall seeing Hoop Dreams several years ago, and being quite moved by it. But any clear memory I have of it has long since disappeared into some deep, dark recess of my brain. I grew up loving baseball, football and basketball almost equally, but my interest in basketball has waned significantly in recent years because the quality of the product in the NBA is such a far cry from what it once was. But then again, this clearly isn't about a bunch of spoiled millionaire ballers. Hoop Dreams might be just what I need to reignite my love for the game. When all else fails, go back to the reason(s) why you loved something in the first place. The game itself never really changes all that much.

My personal interest is in docu's with anthropological interest, I completely loved Second Run's release of Pictures of The Old World by Dusan Hanak:
I'm adding these to my list. I certainly will expand my documentary exploration beyond Criterion. I just knew that the docs the CC have released will all have great merit. Beyond those, I'm relying on you guys to help me find my training wheels.

It's not on Hulu, but I see that Criterion does have a preview video on their site. I have it queued up to watch after I complete these posts.

I also finished the Eclipse set Agnès Varda in California which is mostly documentaries; although they don't cover music, they are similar to the Blank stuff in being luminously filmed, 16mm colour productions from the 60s and 80s; the one about LA murals, Mur Murs, is a beautiful piece of work.
Excellent suggestions. I love blues music, especially blues guitarists.

I've got a lot to explore here. Thank you all!

My rather extensive music library is filled with discs from prog rock and metal bands. It's my favorite genre. Yes, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Rush and early Genesis, to modern outfits like Fates Warning, Tool, Queensryche, Marillion, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Porcupine Tree, Savatage, Transatlantic, and Spock's Beard. From prog I've branched out into symphonic/power metal bands like Epica, Nightwish, and Kamelot.

I'd much rather listen to ten minutes of complex musical arrangements with intelligent lyrics played by virtuoso musicians than hear somebody whining/wanking off while playing the same three chords repeatedly for three minutes.
