I just noticed it got released in France last year. Looks like the full 300 minute cut. No idea how region-friendly it is, but Amazon claims it's region-free. No idea if it'd have forced subs though. Back cover makes it look like it's a 4K remaster -- one of the reviews claims it's director-approved.

I might take a chance on importing this later. Anybody have this already? Any info on it?

Anybody think this is a good sign that it could get a US release?
I'd hold fire if I were you;

I used Shipito to re-ship them to the UK. It was around $26 to ship those six to me. Which isn't bad, B&N would generally charge around $13 for six titles, so it's not too much more. Criterion ship free if you spend over $50, there are loyalty points towards a $50 voucher (my order put me over 20% of the way there), you fill the customs declaration in yourself, so no chance of customs. B&N's shipments can be kind of erratic too I find. I'm very happy with the experience and I'll be doing it again for the next Flash Sale.

I just finished watching Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and was surprised at how profoundly moving the film was. It is on many levels quite depressing, but this is leavened with some offbeat humour that I thought fitted nicely and harked back to Fargo, the source material. The dialogue was minimalist, most of the story was told through imagery and that imagery was superb. I think this would make a great addition to the Criterion Collection. Rinko Kikuchi is really a wonderful actress.

Alright lets not get all butthurt, sorry that I have an opinion on how shit prog rock was & is. I've never been impressed with someone playing two keyboards at the same time or a 10 minute guitar solo.

I don't have anything against prog rock, but to quote the great Steven Patrick Morrissey, "it says nothing to me about my life." I'm not sure how how one can conclude that there are more prog rock bands than punk ones as punk is the foundation of so many bands (e.g. U2, Nirvana, New Order, nearly every British band that came after the movement)

and "live fast, die young" is hardly the punk rock mentality... some punk rockers don't even drink, smoke, eat meat, take drugs, engage in promiscuous sex, etc.

I respect everyone's opinion here, but I'd much rather listen to 3 chords repeated. If anyone thinks that "3 chords" equates to not thoughtful, simple, lowest common denominator, or even rudimentary musicianship, you are really selling punk rock short.

You guys know who Henry Rollins is right? He's on the History channel a lot now. His intellect is near genius level and his career started as vocalist for the hardcore punk band Black Flag

Glad to know there are some Punk/HC fans here. I went through my Punk/Goth faze back in High School in the early 80s. Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Bauhaus, & the Cocteau Twins were some of my favorite bands.

Would anyone in this thread be interested in participating in a list/poll/survey of the best foreign/independent films of the year (much like the Blu-ray.com Community Top 25 Films thread)? I assume the members in this forum would be most susceptible to the idea of highlighting the films that are often overlooked each year in favor of the major studio films. I just wanted to gauge if there is any interest in doing something like this for next year, otherwise I won't bother? Thanks!

Well, proto-punk is usually considered to have started in the 60's, but I'm not an expert. I suppose Buddy Holly can be said to have a certain "garage" sound. Perhaps the irony of my mentioning Gabriel to the OP was lost?

RIP Keith Emerson

I saw Emerson, Lake and Palmer in concert back in 1992, during their reunion tour, and was awestruck at Emerson's keyboarding. Man, this year sucks.
The one and only time I saw ELP in concert was back in 1973, at the (what was then called) Boston Garden. The two things I most remember about it:

(1) My girlfriend and I had floor seats. A couple of rows ahead of us, there was a guy with a doobie so big, it made a cigar look small. As soon as the concert started, he lit up, passed it down the row, it was then passed to the next row, went across to the other end, and so on. It lasted long enough to make its way back up.

(2) The concert was supposed to start at 8:00pm, but didn't start until 9:30. ELP then played for three hours with no break. At that point, my girlfriend and I had to leave to catch the subway back to where my car was parked, and I wasn't sure how late the subway would run. We stopped to use the restrooms, and as we were finally leaving, ELP was back to do their encore, and I heard the opening of "Pictures at an Exhibition".

The next day, at my job (I worked at an ice cream shop at the time) there were a couple of kids with ELP t-shirts. They'd been to the concert, too, so we were talking about it. Turns out that ELP's encore was the entire "Pictures at an Exhibition"!

[Show spoiler]One of the gang, desperate for money, decides to rob a pawn shop. He goes up to the clerk, brandishes a pistol, and says "You know what this is, right?" (he means "I'm robbing you, get it?") The clerk quickly and calmly takes the pistol from the surprised thief's hand, looks it over, says "Sure. A 1952 Beretta in poor condition. Fifteen hundred lire" and hands it back. The would-be thief, completely humiliated, says "Uh, no thanks" and slinks out of the store. (Please note that the dialog is from memory and may not be exact).

The first movies that come to mind when I try to think of similar ones are:

I'm All Right, Jack
The Man in the White Suit
Soldier in the Rain
Paper Moon

None of these are exact matches, but they're all comedies that don't necessarily have a lot of laugh-out-loud moments but have a light and amusing tone all the way through.

I also have a feeling that I'm missing a lot through not understanding the original Italian dialog but I don't suppose I'll ever know for sure.
Count me as another fan of Big Deal on Madonna Street. I also like the American remake Welcome to Collinwood (2002) with George Clooney, Sam Rockwell, Luis Guzman, William Macy, Michael Jeter, etc.

I've read the review on The Friends of Eddie Coyle but was wondering what others thought of it. I love Mitchum and this would be a blind buy for me.

It's a good film and I've seen it a couple of times, but that's enough for me.

I'm continuing to plow through the Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman box set, and I have decided not to watch anything else until I've completed it.

This morning after my run, i watched Zatoichi's Pilgrimage.

Zatoichi's Pilgrimage is a solid entry in the series, mostly thanks to a mind-blowingly good fight scene during the conclusion, where Zatoichi evades an attack by arrows, and actually catches one in mid-air and subsequently uses it to stab another attacker. (This also happens in the fourth American Ninja film, y'all.) There's also a uncanny tearjerker scene early in the film, after Zatoichi kills an attacker, only to see (well, hear) the attacker's horse approach and start mournfully nudging the body.
