Default Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner?

I'm not up to speed on licensing and rumours as much as most of you. So I ask, any reason for me to be optimistic that Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner will be a Criterion release at some point? Flat out love the movie, don't have a region free player for the UK blu which has some nice extras.

Below is a link someone shared in the discount announcement thread for a $100 B&N gift card. After the discount you're getting $100 for only $73. I ordered one to tuck away for the July 50% sale.
27% off or around $15.83 per title online next sale depending on tax, yes please (or less if there is a coupon available)

Even better for those with B&N store close and members.

Yes to Maborosi. I don't have After Life, but I have the Japanese DVD of Distance which has English Subtitles. That's another great work by Koreeda that you should see.

At least I heard back from Criterion today that Zatoichi is not going OOP. They just need a little time to make more. I guess a lot goes into that process of creating the huge set. Personally I would forgo all the DVD's and just put everything in a 10 BD disc clear scanavo case and throw in a little booklet and call it a day. Once I get it that's where it's going anyway a 10 disc case.

Has anyone else watched Don't Look Back besides me?

I always considered Bob Dylan to be a mysterious, enigmatic, unfriendly icon, but after watching this film, made in 1965 by D.A. Pennebaker, I have a whole different perspective of Dylan. Maybe he's changed as he's gotten older, but he's thoroughly witty, thoughtful and respectful in both the film and the outtakes. It's a shame this website never gave a review for the blu-ray release, which I think is superb in terms of supplements. There are at least 4 or maybe 5 hours of supplements that go along with this 100 minute film. It's an amazing historical record and a great companion piece to Monterey Pop, as well as Gimme Shelter.

Yes, I thought it was incredible. I had not watched it in over 20 years and at that time was terribly disappointed because I expected 100% concert footage. Dylan interacting with reporters was not as interesting to me back then.

I don't recall too many comments on here either, but Aaron and Mark covered it in a Criterion Close-up podcast episode. I suggest listening if you have not heard it.

Where would you buy a 10-Disc Blu-ray Scanavo case? I want to buy one, too. I found a Viva Elite 10-Disc Blu-ray Case 25mm on Casetopia. I noticed that the second disc, from my set, has slight scratches. I stopped watching the films because I want to transfer the discs over to a case first.

Since we're talking about Asian cinema, one title I've been low-key hoping for a Criterion release of for years now is The Horse Thief, the movie Martin Scorsese named his #1 movie of the 90s on the Siskel & Ebert Best of the 90s special, 7:40 mark here:

The movie is from 1986 but was unknown in the States until the 90s. There is a 10 minute clip from the movie on Youtube and it looks mesmerizing and hypnotic even on a small scale resolution:

All I know is that it's only a few weeks until I get my Whit Stillman Trilogy. And I can't freakin' wait. It's going to be SO MUCH fun to revisit these films!

I didn't know someone could still be excited over watching old Whit Stillman movies.

Just kidding!

I still think, looking back, that Metropolitan was probably the best of the three. But it's been decades. So I want to sit and watch all three again, right in a row, and see how I feel now. I mean, The Last Days of Disco has both a young Kate Beckinsale and a young Chloë Sevigny -- it doesn't get much better than that. And Barcelona has a brilliant Mira Sorvino, among others.

I'm SO excited about this.

It is a captivating film. I have the laserdisc that was released by Image/Kino. As far as I know, neither Kino nor anyone else ever released it in the US on DVD.

Another must-see film from the same director, Tian Zhuangzhuang, is The Blue Kite, released on DVD by Kino -- still in print; I'd love for Kino to upgrade it to Blu. It's remarkable on its own, but even better as part of a triple feature with Chen Kai-ge's Farewell My Concubine and Zhang Yi-mou's To Live in showing life under China's Cultural Revolution in the 60s (though each film begins a ways before that).

Just kidding with you. I've only seen Metropolitan, but it was not my cup of tea. Maybe because I live 15 minutes outside a metropolis of 5,800 people.

I'll still get the set but the other two movies will be way down on my to-view list.

Of the Stillman trilogy, I'd personally rank them

1) Barcelona
2) Metropolitan
3) Last Days of Disco

And "The Last Days of Disco" would be a distant third for me. "Barcelona" is an absolutely fantastic film.

When I first glanced at your post I thought it was the Slim Whitman Trilogy!

For me, I think my joy with the films comes from the fact that I was basically the same age as the characters when the films came out (more or less). So, I remember thinking how much I would love to "be them," to "live their lives."

Well, other than certain elements, obviously.

But I was living in the Detroit area, a middle class existence, and the lives they were living all seemed so amazing to me. It will be interesting to see them after all these years, after a totally different experience in life.

See, I loved Last Days of Disco at the time. I hope I still like it somewhat nearly as much now. I really, when it comes down to it, very much enjoyed all three. But as I said above, it's been a long time. I'm as curious as anyone as to what my reaction will be now.
