I haven't seen either, Jonathan.

Dog Day Afternoon
...And Justice For All
Scarface
Scent of a Woman
Carlito's Way
Heat
Donnie Brasco
The Insider

Those are some great performances. The "weakest" of the lot, if one can truly call it that, is the one he won an Oscar for. Yes, I know it was probably a make up win, but still, he should have won more than one.

Seeing Al and Bobby D facing each other at that diner table in Heat is one of my all-time favorite cinematic moments. They should have had Wayne and Garth kneeling next to them, repeating "We're not worthy" until they dropped dead from exhaustion.

If Gene Hackman and Steve McQueen perfected the car chase, then De Niro and Pacino perfected the downtown gun fight. I hate guns, but when Val Kilmer started squeezing off the rounds in his Colt 733, I wanted to bust a cap in someone's ass!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, especially since Yi Yi is (as far as I know) the only thing you've seen from Yang.

There's so much to unpack from its domino effect of a story. There isn't a wasted minute. One thing I will say, after seeing three of Yang's films, I remain in awe at how successfully he uses composition. I don't recall him ever using an establishing shot. He transitions from sequence to sequence, always contributing to every little thread while being immaculately framed.

Watched the interview with Chen Chang, which gave me more of a proper insight into Yang's way of working. Anxious to watch the documentary tomorrow.
The package is a really great value. The fact that Criterion was willing to release a 2 blu-ray set with a 4 hour film, full 4 hour commentary, and a 2 hour documentary, and still have it at the usual single disc price seems to indicate that they really wanted to get this film in as many collections as possible.

Will be interesting to see if they give this a UK release.

Yes. Good film. But I don't like Pacino's performance in that. That's when he started to irritate me.

I watched The Manchurian Candidate last night. The b&w films really pop with the new transfers. I'm not technically astute enough in film to hang with some videophiles in here, but I know when the picture wows me and when it is ok. This looked fabulous to me.

I may have to pick up the novel this summer. While this was extremely relevant in 1962 during the Cold War some of the themes may be coming back around today. Very interesting movie. 8/10

Since Criterion has released Watership Down which i simply loved (both as a film and as a release/transfer), maybe they could release The Plague Dogs (uncut) too by the same creators?
I haven't seen it though and watching just the trailer it seems depressing.
It's very highly thought of from what I understand.

I like that one movie where Pacino gets mad and yells. Gold.

I would add Frankie and Johnny to that list. Pacino proved he can be effective not acting at top volume, and he even proved he could handle comedy, but too often, like De Niro and Hackman, he takes roles where he ends up playing a caricature of himself.

The master of the slow burn.

He lets the intensity build and build and build until you can't take it anymore.

...until it's time to unleash the fury.

That Armond White comment made me spit vodka on my keyboard. I'm not sure if I should say you're hilarious or seriously criticize you. :}
