I wouldn't hold your breath. DVD to Blu upgrades don't seem to be a big priority for Criterion at the moment.

Last night, I watched my Criterion Blu-ray of The Manchurian Candidate.

This movie deserves one of my trademark long-winded reviews, but, alas, I do not have time this morning. I'll just say that, in any other year (in other words, a year without Gilda and In a Lonely Place), this might have been my favorite Criterion release of the year. The film speaks for itself, and the high definition transfer is downright phenomenal for this restoration.

Angela Lansbury is so creepy and awesome in The Manchurian Candidate. It's also fun to see Henry Silva in an early role, because I grew up watching him in Sharky's Machine.

I still need to go through all of the extras, so I'll do that over the next couple of nights.

Is anyone else going to see the new restoration?
I'm definitely going. I will also be seeing it at the Alamo in KC.

Hope a theater nearby gets Ran too, would love to see it on the big screen. It's too bad they messed up the colors though

I feel bad for the people who notice and are bothered by this stuff. I've read the exceedingly detailed descriptions of the color problems in Ran, and even after knowing what I *should* be seeing, I can still barely see it.

It's not gong to affect my enjoyment of the film personally, but it's a pretty noticeable shift.

The teal tint doesn't seem to be as noticeable in the indoor scenes to me:

But the detail is better, check the symbol on the lapel of his kimono.

Yes, the improvement in detail is huge. A good deal of the film is outdoors , but you're right it's not as noticeble indoors. I just think it's unfortunate that so many new restorations are getting this yellow/greenish tint these days. It's become a fad almost. I'm going to get it regardless, but I was hoping it would be a "perfect" release

To Be Or Not To Be, Battleship Potemkin, and Sherlock Jr. are just fantastic films. Belle de Jour is one of my least favorite from Bunuel though.

It's interesting reading about people having some minor issues (not here, elsewhere) with A Brighter Summer Day's BD transfer, when the only way people were able to see it before was a horrible looking Laserdisc. There wasn't even a DVD of it.

I guess people will complain about anything.

I noticed the exact same thing with Lady Snowblood when I saw it in the theater earlier this year. In that case, the tint didn't bother me (and actually worked well with the snow in the outdoor scenes), and was also less noticeable indoors. Did the same people work on the restorations of those two?

Looks like CC has already shipped the replacement case for The Manchurian Candidate. All will be well in my library soon.

Holland Just Hope

Hope that RAN 4K will get a theater release in Holland too. Never saw like many Kurosawa just own one on BR and that is SEVEN SAMURAI. If the release of RAN comes I will just like last year when I saw for the first time saw BLADE RUNNER in a theater and that was Awesome to see that on the big screen. Another one to see classic that I like to see is a special marathon for the 35th Anni. of Indiana Jones first 3 pictures.

There are so many filmmakers I love that I struggle to find *any* copy of some of their films. Maybe that's why I find it easier to overlook stuff that isn't perfect when it finally becomes available.

That being said I thought ABSD looked great (with the understanding that there was the one unrestored scene).

Yep. There's literally one scene that I found to be noticeably off, and it only lasts, like, thirty seconds. Nothing to complain about. The film looks way better than I could have hoped for, and I'm immensely grateful to Criterion for being able to finally possess a copy.

If I recall correctly even such a popular film as The Sound of Music has one or two shots from different sources that are not up to par with the rest, I think the problem is if you don't read carefully the reviews or just see the screencaps looking awesome, you could end up a bit disappointed that it doesn't look that good all of the time.
