I am interested in Letter Never Sent. Now more so when you talked of that scene. Your reaction reminded me of when I saw Die Nibelungen part 2 when they lay seige to the stronghold.

"The Grey" is another film with a great deal of similarities to "Letter Never Sent". The forest fire scene is absolutely amazing. I can't imagine what a difficult shoot that was, particularly in 1959.

"Letter Never Sent" is really a landmark film because it's one of the first to shape both modern action/adventure movies and survival films. Really recommend checking it out if you haven't already.

It's one of the lower price point titles because of the lack of special features. Definitely check it out Ray.

Finally got around to watching The Assassin last night. I really didn't find it too slow at all... I'd compare the pacing to some of Jarmusch's odder films but much more controlled and refined in the story and visual departments. I could definitely see Criterion releasing this someday where it would be more appreciated...

BIG fan of Letter Never Sent as well. SO rewatchable. Absolutely gripping every time. I do somewhat wish the film was shot in color. Immediately after diamond deposits are discovered and everyone gleefully runs through the forest you can tell that place is exploding with peak Fall color. Would have been great to see. That said, the B/W definitely works like crazy at depicting the hard, cold truths of the situation the geologists soon find themselves in. I am all over The Cranes are Flying when/if it gets a Blu upgrade.

A couple of other films that make me almost reach for a sweater while watching would be Odds Against Tomorrow and especially Day of the Outlaw. I wish there was a Robert Ryan film in the Collection..........Bad Day at Black Rock maybe? There's a film to thaw you out from a winter chill!
