I love these Flash sales. I purchased Thieves Highway & Obsession from Arrow. I plan to purchase a few more from Eureka/Moc. Maybe this can be an incentive for some folks who haven't to go region-free?

Totally. I've noticed that for every movie I buy I add ~2.4 titles to my wishlist. The solution is obviously to stop buying movies.

I don't think it's "oversell" but overhype." I avoid everything you recommend!

You seem to enjoy most of the films you see. Not a thing in the world bad about that.

Owl, I rarely post but I do come to this forum daily being a Criterion lover and I have purchased many films I'd have not given thought to due to many of you in here and your passion (and very detailed) critiques. You do not "oversell" and I truly enjoy your reviews.
There are a number of films I did purchase because of you, mainly "Ride The Pink Horse" and "Gilda".
Of course, I found both films to be excellent and I thank you for that as well as many others in here with their recommendations too.

Have you seen the episode of Friends with Alec Baldwin?

No offence Great owl, it just came to my mind with hoytereden's post.

It's even more remarkable given that it was made in 1959 when movies simply were not shot in that way. I have to imagine Alejandro Inarritu has seen it multiple times because there are many instances where "The Revenant" borrows heavily from it. There's a shot early in the film where two characters are having a confrontation and one throws the other to the ground as the camera moves in sync with the movement of the confrontation. It's so damn similar to many of the sequences in "The Revenant". I'd also be shocked if Terrence Malick hasn't seen it because there are many aesthetic similarities to a Malick film. "Letter Never Sent" is really a landmark film because it's one of the first to shape both modern action/adventure movies and survival films. Really recommend checking it out if you haven't already.
Nice review. It is films like Mikhail Kalatozov's Letter Never Sent that make me even more eager for Criterion upgrades; I have waited years for them to upgrade Kalatozov's equally brilliant The Cranes Are Flying. That film is a showcase of ground breaking cinematography and technique that the director carried forward into his later films.

The lack of upgrades this year has been a real downer for me. So many I want. It is especially troubling to me when Criterion is sitting on some of the best Russian/Soviet films ever made that would benefit so greatly from Blu-ray and yet there is no urgency to get them out in the HD format.

A Criterion box set of the Val Lewton films would be the best Halloween ever. Cat People alone would still be awesome, but I'd feel disappointed that the rest of the films might be less likely to ever see the light of day on BD

Fantastic Planet is currently unavailable at amazon.com
It has this strange message

"Item Under Review
This item is currently unavailable because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

Remember that creepy photo Criterion posted yesterday?

Well on their Tumblr page, the studio tagged the photo with "1942." Therefore, anyone who has been guessing Cat People may not be too far off.

Yeah, it seems that they're definitely hinting at Cat People. Cool news, if true. It's a fun little movie. This WB / Criterion deal is a true blessing.

I watched Scenes From A Marriage last night on TCM for the first time.

As with most Bergman films, it's interesting.

It's basically one long, nearly three hour conversation between two people, broken up into several parts. It uses almost no music.

Much like my ex-wife, I'm glad I saw it, but I cannot say that I ever wish to see it again.

It possesses many of the same qualities as my ex-wife.

It's very charming.

The talking never stops.

There is no sex.

...Bergman is a genius.

It appears that Kiarostami went through surgery complications and is now in a coma.

Sigh. 2016. Don't do this to me.
