That Orson Welles quote is spot-on. My copy remains unopened. I just can't bring myself to watch it again after the impact my initial viewing had on me years ago. Even the films that ape it don't quite have the same feeling.

If anyone here has a copy of Berlin Alexanderplatz or The Human Condition that they might be interested in trading, please PM me immediately.

I have several like new Criterions available and might be willing to throw in some cash+titles if the offer is right.

They're just dvds.

...you don't want em anyway!

Yeah it's a shame. They could've made a better film in a week.

If Make Way for Tomorrow doesn't inspire you to double down on your 401K, I don't know what will.

Earlier today, I flipped a coin to decide between watching my Criterion Blu-ray of The Last Temptation of Christ or watching my Blu-ray of Ben-Hur (1959) and the included 1925 silent version.

Ben-Hur won the toss.

I guess that there's always next Easter, although I'll probably get around to watching the Scorsese film before then. I think. Maybe.

Aside from the rowing and chariot race sequences, I find Ben-Hur to be an incredibly long and dull slog. Hopefully it was better for you.

I was totally riveted throughout both the 1959 and 1925 versions of Ben-Hur. They're amazing films across the board, and they're examples of epic filmmaking at its finest.

Have you ever ever seen Last Temptation? It's become a tradition for me to watch on Good Friday, I'm drawn to its intellectual dialogue and narrative (on a secular level), plus how tremendously spiritual it is. (I'm Catholic.) I know this caused a hullabaloo when it came out but I don't get it - it's all a big "what if...".

Chungking Express is listed as "in stock in 6-10 days" at $39.99 at Amazon. How come? Doubt it would come through though. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Channel 5 is UK is under fire by parents for showing Watership Down for Easter.. apparently its inappropriate lmao.

Oh my days, do these parents not know of an off switch or read about a film before showing kids, and I'm sorry just because it has Rabbits in it, doesn't mean its an easter film, so why would it be inappropriate to show on Easter

They should have shown The Last Temptation of Christ or The Passion of Christ lol.

Cause nothing says Easter like "watership down". I wonder who saw that name and thought it would be a fine Easter movie. Or they didn't care until the "adult" subject matter started.

Has a bizarre dream that Criterion was upgrading Chasing Amy and releasing Mallrats in the same month.

I'm still waiting for them to stock up on Hidden Fortress from when I ordered it two months ago.

I think when we start having dreams about blurays, it's a sign that we should get out more!
I had recently seen a dream about a bluray too, but I don't remember.

I finished A Brighter Summer Day yesterday. It took me a few nights to get through it because I started late at night and it is such a slow burn. I cannot say that 4 hours flew by, but I also did not mind the length.

It is not like any other coming of age I have seen. Slow, deliberate narrative that was completely engrossing. The scope was so huge with so many characters that I did have a little difficulty in following. I was also at a disadvantage in historical understanding of the Taiwan/China/Japan dynamics.

Gorgeous, gorgeous film. Much was shot at night or with camera setups and angles unlike most movies. Solid 9/10.
