Excuse me. Hugo was a lackluster CGI mess and while Wolf was maybe his best film in a while, it doesn't hold a candle to his work in the 70s and 80s. It just felt like Casino 2. I love Scorsese but I would never watch Hugo again. One of his 5 worst films, easily.

Agreed, those are the only Scorsese movies I own, and have seen pretty much everything.

That might change though if someone decides to release After Hours, seems like a long shot for Criterion but would be happy it comes from anyone at this point.

On Malick,

It will be interesting to see if any thematic links exist between To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, and the upcoming Weightless. Since they are all releasing so close together (espically close together considering Malick) I wonder if the intent was any kind of informal trilogy.

Having seen 2/3 nothing obvious is coming to mind but final call will come after Weightless. (That film features Rooney Mara and Ryan baby goose Gosling, who are both insanely beautiful, and will be a dream in Malick's visuals, so hype level 10 already)

Wait... What?

I haven't seen Hugo, but thought Wolf Of Wall Street was garbage.

Pedro, what about Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas?

I should have added in my post above that Spielberg and Scorsese have a better collective 21st century output than Malick. Yeah, TToL is special, but it would bother me if I were a fan that he is going deeper and deeper into the type of Malick-isms, if you will, that make his films uninteresting rather than the ones that made some of his past work great.

I once decided I would watch every one of his movies so pretty much had a marathon, After Hours was the only one that made a big impression on me and watched a second time the next day,

This was long ago, was probably 18-19 at the time so I have been meaning to watch his greatest hits a second time, but haven't found time to do so.

To be clear I also liked most of the others just not on the same level, specially Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, The Age of Innocence and Casino, it will be interesting to see how my appreciation of his movies has changed if at all.

Im a big fan of The New World and TTOL, but still have to agree just by the amount of films those have made, it does bother me as a fan, but that is only 2 movies still, I think the last great movie by Spielberg was Munich, and that is 5 in a row, he has never been consistent for me, after all he made The Lost World

I saw it in theaters two weeks ago. I'm not sure there's a bigger Malick fan on here than me, but I found the film to be a mess and unengaging. It does have some thematic link to Malick's other films, but it honestly felt to be a parody of his work. It's a shame because the film does deal with the very real loss of Malick's brother in real life, but it does not convey how this affected him.

Tree of Life dealt with Malick's childhood, to an extent. To the Wonder dealt with his love affair in France, to an extent. Knight of Cups dealt with his brother's death, to an extent. It's interesting how his last three films have dealt with very significant aspects of his personal life. However, to me, only Knight was unsuccessful in establishing an actual and thematic purpose.

My philosophy of Malick is boils down to this: the more films he makes the less I like him.

I'll be giving Brifge of Spies a spin, but I am by no means a fan of his work. I do think he gave us Leo Dicaprio's best role in Catch Me if You Can and Munich is an incredible film.

If only Spielberg and Scorsese would double down creatively like Malick does/did. What a beautiful cinematic would that would have been.

Malick fans might enjoy reading Willa Cather's "O! Pioneers" and "My Antonia." I've read them and think Malick may have, too. He had a small part in "Badlands" and definitely sounded like a Midwesterner. Those two novels are about immigrants surviving on the great plains during the 19th century, and are full of the sort of images and stories Malick seems to enjoy. Your own imagination can be better than the movies.

As much as I like Terrence Malick's copious output of films in the last 5 years, I really hope he takes a bit of time off before he makes his next movie (which he's already doing now with Weightless - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weightless_(film)). Look at what we got in 1998 after nearly 20 years without a film? One of the greatest anti-war movies of all time: The Thin Red Line.

The only problem is if he waited 20 years to finish Weightless he would end up being 92 years old.

Imagine that, it is simply too long, maybe it's better to get average Malick than no Malick , at least with his current output there are some people that still find something to appreciate in it.

Well, not 20 years... I do realize he's getting up there in age. Perhaps 5 years might do the trick. But then again, every day could be his last, so its probably better to live in the here and now. And at this point, we cinephiles should be grateful for anything the man makes, however homogenous his output has become recently.

I actually watched about an hour of To The Wonder last night on Netflix--I had never seen it before.

As with every Malick film, there's some really beautiful imagery in it.

What I saw, I liked more than I thought I would based on every thing I'd read and heard about it. But it still struck me as a lesser version of The Tree of Life. It has the same basic form and narrative style, but the story isn't as engrossing and it doesn't do for the concept of love what Tree of Life did for the exploration of life, death and childhood imo.

There were moments when it felt like a bad Zoolander parody of a Calvin Klein commercial.

I plan to finish the rest of it tonight.
